Parents of College Class of 2018 (A.K.A., "Is this the line to the poor house?")

Youngest and last DS, a college grad now!:cool1: Yipee, he did it, so proud and happy for him. He is moving on to a Masters in Accounting, 30 additional credits mandatory required , which he needs to sit for and prepare him for CPA exam.:goodvibes

Congrats to your DS!!

Today was DD's 22nd birthday and she got the best gift ever- The official offer letter for her new job. She will be a Marketing Assistant at the corporate headquarters of a financial institution. She is super excited. Almost as excited as me when I read the letter and saw the benefits package. My youngest is officially off the payroll and can be dropped from my insurance in 60 days giving me a big raise. That's not thunder- it's DH and I happy dancing!:dogdance::yay::yay:

Seriously so proud and happy for her.

Happy belated birthday to your DD and congrats on her new job!! I look forward to the day when both kids are self-sufficient, but it’s still going to be a while for us. At least DD graduated debt-free and DS is going to a CC, so no debt there, either. These kids are way more expensive as young adults though compared to any other time in their lives! What a happy day for all of you!

It’s been almost a year, how has the transition to adulthood from college gone for everyone?

DD loves life in San Antonio but hated the first job and left it in December. She started a job she loves as the Social Media and PR specialist for a company. It seems perfect for her as she lives the millennial existence of posting to Social Media, meeting with influencers about their brand, and going to events.

Her boyfriend proposed in December and she is now wedding planning. I’m wedding paying and enjoying things like wedding dress shopping weekend with her.

My son is still in college. He had a bad adviser and didn't follow up on things himself. Plus he flunked a class that was required for his major and was a prerequisite other classes he needed. He took it again and got a D when he needed a C to move on. So he had to take it a 3rd time.
Completely messed him up.
So now he is looking at a Dec. 2019 graduation date if all goes well. So his 4 year plan has turned into a 5 1/2 year plan. He so desperately wants to be done.
And his internship he had all lined up for last summer fell through when the company downsized and this summer he hasn't been able to even get call backs on the internships he has applied for.

His software engineering field is pretty active but I think his being in a small town is hurting him job wise. We told him he should apply for ones here in Atlanta and live at home for the summer. Only time will tell if he actually does it.

My dd is living at home. She works 30-35 hours a week at the liquor store at Target, it doesn't pay horrible, and it's a mile from home. She graduated with a double major, film production and English writing. She wants to be in publishing, which turns out, is not easy to get into. She is doing some freelance work remotely for a couple of very small publishers in MN. One of them just gave her a book to edit, instead of just proofread and mentioned possibly working fulltime (remotely, they are 5 hours away). Not sure exactly what full time means in that world, but it's bits and pieces that look great on a resume and move her in the right direction. She is still mulling over a possible grad degree (she would prefer in the UK), but not sure if that will happen or not. She managed a double major with no loans, and this would cost soooooo much more.
She and a friend from high school are going on their first non family vacation, 8 days at Disney in May. She is so excited and I am so excited for her. They are going to have so much fun!

DS was fortunate enough to have a job lined up before graduation (Was a chemical engineering major) and he lives in a beautiful studio apartment on the 14th floor of his building overlooking the river.....Life is good!

I am so happy to see this thread is still going!! I can't believe it has been 6 years since I started it -- Time has FLOWN.

My DS graduated last May, landed a dream job as a Marine Engineer in January, and moved into his own place last month. I am so incredibly proud of him! Still dealing with the whole empty-nest barrel of emotions since he is my only one... But at the same time my husband and I are enjoying having the (very small) house to ourselves. We've only been married for two years and my son has been living at home for almost the past year. The year before that was mostly spent with me recovering from a car accident so we're finally getting to have some belated newlywed time. :-) And in January, I'm taking my husband to WDW for his very first time, and can't WAIT.

Keep those updates coming! Love to see them!

DD is finishing up her year long apprenticeship at a theater company in another part of our state. We will be moving her out of that housing at the end of the month, she'll be home for a week or so, then she will be moving to her first apartment. She has several positions lined up for the summer (one at a Summer theater, and the others on the on call lists for several area theaters). I think she's going to be broke when she moves into that apartment, but she's happy, so we will see.
