Parents of the High School Class of 2017/College 2021

I think I realized it by looking up "common mistakes on the FAFSA"...and yet some articles don't specifically talk about it. Here's a quote from one webpage "FAFSA lines 44A through 44J and 92A through 92I ask about untaxed income. The amount of contributions made to a 401(k) account must be listed here. While the contributions might be tax free, this income is counted on the FAFSA and can impact the amount of financial aid you will receive. "

Basically, your 401K built up savings aren't counted....but...for whatever tax year you are reporting on the FAFSA, you're supposed to report how much you put into tax deferred retirement savings. You report it on the line called "untaxed income". So, it's not the accumulated value of your 401k...just what you put in that year that you have to report on the FAFSA.
Thank you so much for explaining it to me!!! Now I just need to check to see what we did.

DD starts on Monday. She found out today that she got a new roommate . No info or name. I hope its a good match. At the beginning of the year they filled out questionnaires and got to pick but after that if there's a change, they get whoever. DD was hoping to get the room to herself for atleast a few days to settle in-
lol! She's been having side discomfort so possible gallbladder issues or pulled muscle from coughing. We are waiting on ultrasound results. Please keep her in your prayers that's its not gallbladder issues. I've been stressing out if it is. I don't know How it will work if she needs surgery and just starting 2nd semester and recovering time. She does a lot of walking from dorm to campus and to classes. Campus is big so not sure if they offer services

Prayers and good thoughts for her! I hope that it's nothing serious and that she doesn't need surgery.

Moved DD back into her dorm yesterday (friday). We spent the day together and bought her some stuff for her fridge, movie and dinner. Her roommate still hasn't moved in. I told DD be ready she might move in tomorrow and hopefully not to early. I told DD what if her roomie walks in at 7am to move in-lol! I just pray its a good match.
I can't believe its 2nd semester . How is everyone's kids doing?

DS is starting again tomorrow . He had 3 days of classes and then they missed all last week due to weather. I know he is ready to get the semester going.

Ds left yesterday. The semester starts tomorrow. He was eager to go back, see his friends and get into the routine of school.

Finished 1st semester with all As and one B. He's in a couple of honors classes that boost his GPA.

Overall, he's doing great.

We've not seen the personal maturity in him yet, that we noticed in his brothers when they went away. Just a little surprised by that.

Update...

DD is an Alpha Chi Omega!!!

She participated in rush all week long, and found out this morning. I don't have too many specifics, since she was crazy busy during the process.

I know that she started with 6 sororities, and chose 4 to continue meeting with and getting to know the girls. Of the four, 3 wanted to continue meeting with her. Eventually, she had to narrow it down to 2, rating them according to preference. She ended up with her preferred choice.

That's awesome! My DD will be living in her sorority house (Alpha Xi Delta) next year. Do you think yours might live in hers?

Students at Marquette are required to live in the dorms for 2 years, unless there is a special circumstance. But it is a possibility for her as a junior.
Glad your DD is enjoying her sorority experience!!

Oh very cool! Sorority Sisters via moms on the disboards, lol!!

My DD has been filling out stuff to be an RA! I really hope she gets it. Her RA now has been helping her and thinks she will be a good RA. He's always nice to her and he gets annoyed with her bathroom mates and her old roommate. If they are all walking in a group he will say hi by name to my DD. The other girls are kinda immature or they will say a smart remark trying to be funny. He tells my DD she will be good because she is mature and respectful (he's gay so he's not trying to hook up with my DD-lol) . She said she heard there was about 225 people who applied for RA. RA's get free housing and meal plan so this would help out big time!!!!!! The money I'm paying for housing and meal plan can cover her tuition and I will still have money leftover. Plus she wont have to take out a loan again. She feels bad for us helping her out so she feels this is her way of lifting the burden.

Please keep her in your prayers to get RA. Plus this will be good for her to gain experience and will look good for future employment. Her RA doesn't really get the group together or do fun things . She's already planning what she would do if she gets it. She mentioned lots of activities to get everyone involved , make it fun and that everyone feels included. She a quiet person/introvert but when it comes to making people feel welcomed and a group she just shines. She's talking popcorn movie nights, pizza night, group meet up at the campus food place(so those that don't have anyone don't eat alone). She also mentioned goodie bags, using my cricut for decorations and door name tags themes, social events etc She blew me away-lol! She doesn't drink or party so she wants kids that don't party to feel included without pressure

Good for her! I hope she gets the RA position. Sounds like it'll be a good fit for her!

DD has enjoyed the themes her RA has used.
First semester was Little Mermaid, :lovestrucand
second semester is Harry Potter:lovestruc

another update -dd had an ingrown toe nail that the nail died or whatever. Well it fell off on its own. New nail was growing in. She didn't want to tell me so I wouldn't worry. She told my hubby and sent a picture. Looks not so pretty. Luckily hubby told me but asked me not to say anything but thought I should know. I didn't mention it to her. I told hubby to tell her to soak it and make sure it doesn't get infected. I text her today to let me know if she needs any appointments to make them during spring break. We both have our allergy specialist and dental cleaning due at the same time. She didn't mention it so hopefully it doesn't get infect and it grows out nicely. Luckily the first time it grew back fine. 6 more weeks till spring break-lol!

congrats- my daughter got into hers in Sept and now is very busy with a new batch of kids that want to join. she is very busy between that and trying to get 2 more kids to join their housing group for housing pick. Her and her current roommate want to try to get into the apartment style dorms and each get a single room- most have 2 singles and one double room so they need 2 other kids to join that want to be in the double (which is cheaper)- I really hope she gets an apartment style one because the dorms without kitchens you are required to have a meal plan and right now I am paying 6,000 for a meal plan she doesn't even use- she gets 10 meals a week and ends the week with about 6 left! She was done with the food there by the second week LOL- luckily her boyfriend there rents a house so she is over there eating 4 times a week but next year he is going back to the dorms at Boston College so he won't have a nice house to hang out at and cook!

DD finally got the kigurumis for her friends/roommates' Christmas gifts! (Ordered from China and first seller didn't perform, but we had a tracking number that ended up in FL, so we thought they were coming for quite a while...ordered a new set from someone else.) She gave them to them last night and she sent pictures of them posing :) She's happy to finally have that taken care of!

And, another brag on her art- she posted this drawing today:
