Question About Swim Diapers

When we go to WDW in August we will be taking our then one-year-old son with us. I have a question about swim diapers. Do you wear them over regular diapers or instead of? Also, in my "One Step Ahead" catalog, they advertise diaper covers that are washable. Has anyone out there used either or both? Can anyone make a recommendation? Also, should I bring a flotation device for my son? I saw a cute blow-up boat in my "One Step Ahead" catalog.

Thank you!

You put the swim diaper on instead of a diaper. They are great!! They don't swell up and weigh 20lbs pounds like a normal diaper does when it's wet. As for the cloth diaper covers. I've seen them but never used them. I think they are more for looks than anything. They just go over top of a diaper and most that I've see have velcro closures. I think they may be lined with plastic type material inside. Good for cloth diapers maybe?

The cloth swim diapers are MUCH better than the disposable Little Swimmers type diapers. You can buy them at Target. A girl can wear them under another suit, a boy could wear them as a suit. They have rather tight elastic at the leg openings (don't buy them too small) to "hold in" anything that might be produced during the swim. They won't "hold in" pee-pee, but neither do the disposable types -- all either type does is contain solids. I tried both types, and I preferred the cloth type because they look more sleek under a little girl's suit, because they're more comfortable than paper/plastic for the child to wear, and because they're more environmentally sound. Another reason to take them on vacation is that you'd only need one pair -- just rinse them out after each use.

One more note . . .

How do I know that the disposable Little Swimmers type diapers don't absorb pee-pee? This is going to be ugly . . . one day we were out somewhere, and my daughter needed a diaper -- of course, I was caught with an empty diaper bag that day. I had just bought a package of Little Swimmers, so I pulled one out and popped it on her, thinking it'd work fine. WRONG! She wet it, and it absorbed NOTHING -- think about it, these things are sold because they absorb no water -- how could they absorb urine? Let's just say that the car seat and my back seat were a HUGE MESS.

I suggest you call the resort - or WDW for that matter. I know they have rules about infants in the pools, one of which is that they must be wearing a swim diaper. Which kind I do not know--but play it safe so you can go into the pool with your little one--

I've never had anyone ask us what brand but you most definitely have to wear one. One of our trips a parent was walking their dear child to the pool to waddle naked and before you could say lickety split the CM was there escorting them away before a toe touched the water. Can you say e coli?!

We've used Little Swimmers for ages and we swim year round at home in summer and at the Y while the pool is closed. It's easier to rip the sides on them, throw them away and go. We don't personally use the Target ones MrsPete is referring to (cloth outside/plastic inside) though I've seen them packaged as bathing suits vs. swim diapers but they are really cute. You may also try your local Y as they also sell swim diapers (ours does) which are material/plastic. I always fear "accidents" on route as the big reason to not try the others but I could also buy two (one as back up I suppose) and not waste a paper product but that's off topic isn't it. ;)

The reason being that the leg openings on disposable swim diapers are not elasticized in a band, and they can ride over or up. I had a washable ripstop cloth swim diaper that I put on top, which had tight leg openings that eliminated that possibility.
The added bonus was that the cloth diaper did not become soiled, so it always was wearable without requiring a detergent washing.

I think that using a little extra care about this issue is the right thing to do at a resort pool, where a child's accident can require the guards to close the pool for several hours. It's just more considerate of your fellow guests.

I've also used both. We get a lot of use out of the paper ones in the summer, as my parents live on a lake and the kids spend the summer in swimwear. Washing out a cloth one - or having the three required for all day wear - just isn't in the cards.

The disposables "can" but don't usually hold in pee. My daughter peed in hers in the pool, and when we took it off, we got a lot of splash (remove them in the shower for this reason, easier to clean up).

WDW will accept the Lil Swimmers - and sell them in the gift shops, or a cloth swim diaper.

Don't take your child into the pool if they have the runs, regardless of swim diaper or not. If its runny enough, the diaper may not hold it.

When we stayed at HIFS they do not allow the Little Swimmers and neither do most of the pools around where we live because they really have a poor record for holding solids in. So we use a nylon swim diapers that work really well and they were also sold at HIFS. The Disney resorts seem ok with the Little Swimmers, but with all the poor reports of them I just don't use them.

The little swimmer disposable type seems to be most popular. last year both our Hotel shop (Royal Plaza) and the shop at Typhoon Lagoon were selling them in individual packs at around $1.50. They worked fine and my DD (then 1 1/2) was pefectly happy in the pool in them. You can save money by buying in packs from Eckerds if your baby is a frequent swimmer.

Our local pool requires a swim diaper AND a pair of plastic pants over them (the kind you use with regular cloth diapers). This has worked fine for us.

I have also found that the accidents are usually caused by the potty trained kids, ages 3-4 who wait until the very last minute to head for the restroom. Hope that's not me this summer w/ my 3 1/2 yo DD. :D

Considering that is the only type that WDW sells, I'm sure they are more then okay with them.

For a flotation device, I highly recomend the yellow suit with the tube sewn in. My DS loved it !!!! I also would suggest a t-shirt unde it. It will protect the underside of the arms from rubbing.
