It has been forever since I have had Sheperds pie, never made it myself. So does anyone have a simple recipe for it? I know it includes beef, potatoes....among other things, just looking for some recipes. Thank you!

Serves: 6

Ingredients:

4 - 5 large potatoes
6 Sliced mushrooms
Salt 2 tbsp Chopped parsley
2 tbsp Butter/margarine
1 tb Tomato paste
1 dash Milk/whipping cream
1 dash Worcestershire sauce
1 pinch Pepper
1 cup Brown gravy
1 lb Lean ground beef
1 pkg (10-oz) frozen peas or 1 lb peas shelled
1 large Tomato chopped

Boil potatoes in salted water to cover. Drain, cool and peel. Mash in
large bowl with butter, milk and season to taste with salt and pepper. Set
aside. Saute beef until browned, stirring to keep meat crumbly. Season
to taste with salt and pepper. Add tomatoes, mushrooms, parsley,
tomato paste, worcestershire and gravy. Stir to mix. Add peas and cook
about 5 minutes. Turn mixture into casserole. Spread potatoes evenly
over meat. Bake at 400 degrees 40 minutes until top is crispy brown.

Here is the recipe for Cottage Pie that is in the Cooking with Mickey Cookbook Volume II.

1/4 cu of butter
1 cu of onion
1 1/2 lbs of lean beef, ground
salt
Pepper
1/4 teaspoon of savory, ground
1 cu of brown gravy
2 cu of potatoes, mashed
additional butter

Heat 1/4 cu of butter in 9 inch skillet. Add onion and cook until lightly browned, stirring. Add beef, salt, pepper, and savory and continue cooking 5 minutes longer. Stir in gravy and heat until bubbling. Sppon into a buttered 8-cup flat casserole dish. Top meat mixture with mashed potatoes. Dot with pieces of butter.

Bake at 400 degrees for 30 minutes, or until potatoes are lightly browned.

for a family of three........
1 pound of lean hamburg..........scrambled and drained
two cans of cream of corn
and mashed potatoes........in a pinch and if you are in a hurry
use instant potatoes on top..........already made of course
put in oven for tne to 15 minutes.......and enjoy

The kids have this at school hot lunch.......and they call
it shepards pie.......I grew up as knowing it as chinese pie

This is my eleven year old sons favorite.

Boil peeled potatoes, how many depends on how well your family likes mashed potatoes.

Brown about a pound or so of lean ground beef. Drain fat off.
Add 1/2 cup green peppers
Add 1/2 cup onions, when in a hurry I use the frozen seasoning mix of pepper, parsley, celery and onion use a cup when doing that.
Add one can of rotel tomatoes or canned tomatoes and continue to cook mixture down.
Salt and pepper to taste, I like to also add some garlic salt.

Pour meat mixture into casserole and top with about 1/2 cup of grated cheese.

Mash potatoes with milk, butter, and salt and pepper.
Cover top of meat and cheese with mashed potatoes and top with grated cheese.

Bake for about 15 minutes in 350 degree oven until cheese is melted.

Thank you very much everyone.

Pumba......the daycare I worked at served it for the kids and they loved it, that is where I had it last. :)

Now to chose which recipe I want to use...hmmm

Pumba, just curious, I never heard of Chinese pie until I got a job in Auburn. Is that term unique to that area? I am from the "other" Maine!

pie......We always called it chinese pie......THe schools did change the wording to shepherds pie......so no one would be offended....Where are you from and I am over the bridge from Auburn.....THe other Maine must be downeast or up north.......

Pumba, I am from York County, you know the part of Maine that is a suburb of Boston! :) Down here we call in Shepherds pie, but my Auburn friends all call it Chinese pie. Apparently, shepherds settled southern Maine and Asians settled the area along the Androscoggin River. This board is a virtual history lesson! LOL!
