Rise of the Chunkies! A Jan 2020 Trip Report! NEW 7/14 THE END of our TRIP!!

And I have to credit Ariane and her DH Steve for getting us enough chairs for our very large group, thanks guys!
They did an awesome job!!!!

Ok I realize that Steve and Ariane's Steve are not in the picture because No Steve's Allowed! LOL
(It's an inside joke with our Epic Trip group which we had titled No Steve's Allowed when we thought it was exclusively an all-girls trip. Then they came along anyway. )
LMBO!!!

We headed over to World Showcase and the first thing we got was this: The Lobster Chips over at Refreshment Port. It had so much potential as it had a lobster cheese sauce, lobster pieces, and fresh fried chips. But the whole thing was not good. It was super salty, the chips were stale and the cheese was cold. I don't know if it's because it as sitting around for a while but we were not impressed.
OOOOH! We liked this a lot. I'm sorry yours was not good.

View of Caribbean Beach from the Skyliner:
With a HM ghostly hand, too!
OK I don't know about you but I really miss scanning my band, Mickey-to Mickey and watch it light up!!
Not really. I always worry a bit when I do that. "It's not going to work this time. I'll have to pay all over again. People will stare."
It's never been a problem, but there ya go.
We made our way over to Galaxy's Edge with this euphoric feeling. You couldn't help but feel like one of the chosen few LOL
:goodvibes
I took some pictures and video but really I cannot convey all the detail that goes into just the queue of this ride.
Sounds so amazing. :)
You do enter several different "rooms", and then board an "aircraft" which is then captured by the First Order and you exit into a Star Destroyer. It is literally the most amazing sight I have ever seen.
cooool!
The amount of disdain they will gaze on you is pretty funny.
OMG MIND BLOWN!!!!!
So... you weren't impressed, then?
This video is not from this day but I need to show it now, it's pretty much an almost full ride video. Don't view if you don't want a spoiler of the ride itself!
Decided not to watch it. :)
I just had no words anymore, the ride is absolutely the most unique and amazing ride in Disney World!
I just kept saying OMG the entire time, LOL.
We were on Cloud 9 right now!! :cloud9:
So... did you like it? It's not very clear from your comments.
Sooo.
What to do now that you've ridden the most amazing ride at Disney World?

Go home.
:lmao:
Molly had just checked in and got upgraded to a one-bedroom suite!
Nice score for her!
there were 2 bathtubs
What??? How is that even a thing?
The quick service there is small but it's really nice, it felt a bit more like a modified table service in that you order, sit down and they bring the food to you.
I like that! Much more relaxing.
And Steve had literally, his new favorite dish in all of Disney: The Tuna Nicoise Salad
High praise indeed!
Look at my small plate compared to Steve's large salad. But I bet you mine has more calories, LOL.
 You're probably right!
I told you, it was like a mini- Epic trip! @ariane37 @ArielSRL @Jenny Sanders @Mollydolly334 @pepperandchips! Even @docsoliday1 made an appearance
Very nice! Great DISmeet!
They unfortunately didn't get very good service so left early. :(
That's too bad. Never got their drink order taken?
Ok I realize that Steve and Ariane's Steve are not in the picture because No Steve's Allowed! LOL
But to me the night was still young!
Sure. You twenty-year-olds can go on forever. Just wait til you hit your thirties.
the first thing we got was this: The Lobster Chips over at Refreshment Port. It had so much potential as it had a lobster cheese sauce, lobster pieces, and fresh fried chips. But the whole thing was not good. It was super salty, the chips were stale and the cheese was cold.
Shame. It sure sounded good.

What an awesome jam-packed day!! Some day whenever I get to go back to WDW, I hope to finally get to check out Rise of the Resistance, but for now your TR will have to do!

Awesome that so many of my favorite DISers were there at the same time (I am not jealous, at all, nope, not a bit.....) 😭

Seriously though, so great that you all were able to do your own thing and still find time to meet up together! That's THE BEST!

We stayed at Pop in December, and couldn't believe how amazing the Skyliner was for us on our Epcot and DHS trips. Literally minutes door to door. It is SUCH an incredible timesaver, which I never would have guessed!

Off to your Dining Report :)

This view is gorgeous! It makes me very excited to try out the Skyliner.

OMG MIND BLOWN!!!!!

I can't even begin to describe how amazing this ride is. It's literally like you're transported into a world where Star Wars is real. Everything feels so so life-like and so detailed, you're moving on a REAL track and not sitting in a simulator or wearing 3-D glasses. The AT-ATs were my favorite part, you cannot help but have your jaw drop at the sight of them. Really surreal.

RoTR sounds very exciting! Glad you and Steve were able to ride that day and planned on doing it the next. Even though I am not a Star Wars fan, I am still excited to ride it one day!

The Riviera is such an elegant resort. These mosaics greet you as you walk into the Riviera from the Skyliner station:

Wow these are beautiful. The Riviera looks so nice, another spot I definitely want to hit next time!

All the food you ate that day sounded/looked amazing. Especially Steve's salad and that risotto, Yum!

Overall it sounded like a fantastic day.

I'm looking forward to continue reading!

Thank you so much!
Awww I'm so sad you are missing your May trip too. I hope it just means bigger and better trips in the future!

Oh that's definitely what's happening. We rebooked for September on the new free dining deal they released for affected travelers. Bumped up from Coronado Springs to AKL, and upgraded dining to Plus. And today I emailed our agent to add another day to the front end of the trip, and asked for prices for WL instead to be closer to MK since we'll have a toddler.

Plus I'm looking into fun extras. Halloween Party is a must with her but I'm trying to figure out what other add ons we can do too. We've been very fortunate to not have our jobs affected by what's going on, so between tax refund, stimulus, me still getting my annual bonuses and raise this month on top of major lack of shopping and dining out I'm feeling particularly flush with cash to really go big. 🤣

So make sure you go into great detail about any extras you guys did. 😁

Hi everyone!

:wave2:

He's very easy-going and just goes with the flow with whatever I plan at Disney (does this sound familiar with all spouses?).

Umm.....no. My plans get turned upside down All. The. Time.

I said I wasn't going to start a new TR because, well, it is kinda bittersweet to be thinking about Disney when COVID-19 has pretty much shut down real life (as well as our happy place) 😷,

Eventually you might even want to go back and do the November TR too...not sure if Disney will keep the same timing for all its US parks or just CA, but I heard a rumor DL won't be back until after the 1st of the year. And this was from a somewhat reliable source.

He has a new found love in the quick service at the Riviera on this trip and he literally went back twice after to get the same dish. You'll find out what it is soon!

I'll be curious because we weren't so impressed with it.

We managed to get a King Room over at Caribbean beach though in a building right next to the brand new Skyliner, which became our favorite mode of transportation during our trip!

Are you reading my TR....we had a little bit different experience. Then again you guys are active and mobile.

We left on a Friday night after work. This has been our usual routine now when we go for short weekend trips:

Lucky! It takes us all day just to get ready and going!

Even though she is much younger than old me

Old you??????? Puh-lease.... If you're old what am I dirt? :lmao:

I'm glad we got a king bed! It actually makes the room seem, well, roomier!

I hate when we get a room with two beds. We barely fit in the same bed and then all that wasted space....

unfortunately it wasn't running at that time so I think she took the bus back to her resort.

Yeah. Thats the other bummer about the Skyliner. Kinda makes you take a rideshare (which we really can't) or stay at your resort.

What they don't tell you is that there is no Disney transportation prior to that ungodly hour,

Oh no, Disney transport begins running 45 minutes before the parks open so you have plenty of time to get there! --Or so the company line says. :sad2:

I look like I'm ready for a (rough) night out. puckerup:

Oh...Just stawp! All the time you're complaining about your looks, and you're always beautiful. Even when you were a drowned rat, you still looked pretty.

Yes there are lines everywhere. Every line was this long because they don't start letting people in until a little before and so it backs up. So luckily we made it into the park with like 15 minutes to spare! Whew! We were really lucky that day. If we had even been 3 minutes later, it would have been backed up exponentially so I'm not even sure we could have made it in in time!

6:37am:

It sounds like they had learned a lot by three weeks later when we were there. Opening was 8AM and it still looked just like that at 6:30AM. But they let us in by 7AM and we had time to spread out.

Bright Suns Breakfast Platter
Three-Cheese Egg Bite, Pork Sausage, Purple Potato Hash, Mini Mustafarian Cinnamon Roll. We split this since it was quite a bit of food and I don't usually eat a lot that early. I liked the sausage and the cinnamon roll. The potatoes were cold so not the best, and the egg wasn't bad, just fairly standard egg rounds. Maybe next time I'll get the breakfast ronto roaster.

I wouldn't have minded trying that, but by the time we were searching for breakfast, they weren't offering breakfast and had switched to the lunch/dinner menu. My tummy was not up for anything that rich since I'm not a person who normally gets up that early. It was barely 9AM at that point and I'm usually sitting up in bed reading my phone and playing Mahjongg.

I kept checking the RoTR boarding group status, and it seemed to be stuck on one set of numbers for the longest time so we figured it was down for a while

When it goes down, normal reset time is an hour minimum. I found out the reasons behind it the weekend before Disney shut down.

Spoiler: They have to get everyone off the ride when it goes down. I think if you're on your way to interrogation, they have to let the ride take its course. I've not heard of anyone being taken off the ride after you launch into space. Except in one extreme case and that was a serious closure. All the vehicles currently in play have to go to completion. Then they have to cycle the ride back to "opening position" the vehicles need to be in proper placement to restart the ride.

It takes a while to get everyone out. I'm sure like when we were escorted out after they Rey scene, they still had other people on the ride which had to either finish (with only the "B" show running) or get out somehow. Once that is complete, it takes more time for them to cycle through the ride for a test run. As you know its a pretty complicated ride.

The line to get to Epcot was pretty long but the skyliner lines continuously move pretty quickly so that was nice.

Wow! We never saw lines like that when we were there!

Imagine if we had to start taking temperature at the entrance now?

Welcome to your new normal theme park experience!

At Japan I also got the Sake Calpico slushy. Calpico is a japanese soft drink that reminds me of sweet yogurt and they made it into a slushy and had strawberry syrup swirled in. It was so good and not too sweet!

That sounds good! I wish we would have made it to Japan.

I order a bunch of stuff at France too:

We got almost all of that, not the champagne, but it was soooo good!

It was then that our BG was called!!!

:yay: I would have been a little freaked out being that far away from the park when the BG got called!

Even quicker! 18 boarding groups in 30 minutes!

They don't usually start with BG 1, often times they'll start with 7, 10, or 12.

I think they started calling groups at group 10 because the first few groups were for people who couldn't make it from the day before due to the ride breaking down

There has been all kinds of speculation as to what has been done with these early boarding groups. At DL, people were speculating that the early BGs were for VIPs. The conclusion people came to on the DL RotR Suoerthread was that it was just a random computer function where BGs would start.

It seems to be something they did a lot when the ride kept breaking down initially. Think it has gotten better and they start closer to 1

Interesting theory. I took a look at The Chart and they got closer to starting with group 1, just before the closure. This is DL's Chart, and I was surprised at how many times they started with group 1.

There was also speculation that the first BG number was a reflection of the expected ride performance for the day.

Because I broke a molar about 2 days into this Corona thing and since it's not an emergency, I just have to live with it. I can't imagine how fun it would be to get a popcorn kernel stuck inside there! <shudder>

Ouch! That sounds awful. I wonder if they would consider that an emergency here.

Now I can't even trust anything that comes out of your mouth!!

 And you thought you could before?

Rise of the Resistance holds the distinction of being one of only a few rides that have made me cry from how amazing it was. The other ones are Forbidden Journey and Hagrid's at Universal then Flight of Passage at DAK. It really is the most immersive and incredible attraction Disney has ever done. I agree with you, seeing those AT-ATs then seeing Finn and being lifted up to be face-to-face with an AT-AT... I still get chills. And yes, the entrance into load for the ride was unreal... I have a video from when I rode it on the last evening Studios was opened and a lot of people I was with had only ridden it for the first time and you can hear someone saying, "THAT IS NOT A DOOR!" Incredible. It genuinely felt like they put you into those films. The only negative I can ever say about that attraction is that there are still so many SWGE cast members who have not ridden it and that always bothers me since if there are any people I know who deserve to ride it, it's a large group of them.

Those Riviera rooms look so homey. I love the style they have. Gosh, it makes me upset that I never made a point to check them out when I had so many opportunities to do so. Oh well.

I'm not sure if I'm more drawn to the Tuna dish or the Chicken Fingers. I guess that describes me as a person. And you're probably right about those chicken fingers having way more calories than the salad even if the salad was portioned bigger lol

Day 1 Part 2: The Chunkies Rise!

Geez lady! You've become and updating machine!

After our Boarding Group was called, we excitedly took the skyliner back to Hollywood Studios!

Huh. I wouldn't have thought of that. When I read your previous update I was putting myself in your shoes, and figured if it were us, we would have motored down the path to DHS. I guess your way was faster.

I took some pictures and video but really I cannot convey all the detail that goes into just the queue of this ride.

That how I felt when we rode it the week before.

It really is an incredible ride, but having been on it several times now, the amount of effort that goes into getting a chance to ride it is exhausting.

When we got off the ride, we were both speechless!!

Same!

We went to visit the new Riviera Resort!! Molly had just checked in and got upgraded to a one-bedroom suite!

There seems to be a lot of that going around. Or there was.

I love the mozaic murals so much!

Those were really cool. Almost better than going in the front entrance.

SWEEET digs!

Looks familiar! Do you know what room number she had? It looks exactly like our room, it appears to be an accessible room.

And Steve had literally, his new favorite dish in all of Disney: The Tuna Nicoise Salad

OK, I can see where he would like that one. I would have liked to have tried the steak that they had there, but we never ended up going back.

After a few hours rest in the room we headed out to Nomad Lounge over at AK. We met up with all the DISboarders who were there during that time.

Nice!

We headed over to World Showcase and the first thing we got was this: The Lobster Chips over at Refreshment Port.

Sounds like you could have had good expectations. I'm glad we never tried this.

It was quickly redeemed but this combo: The Wild Mushroom Risotto and merlot from Masterpiece Kitchen. Yum, this is a delicious dish

Yes! That was delicious!

I would say it is the similar wait time for the boats at the end of the night but you're consistently moving as opposed to just waiting in a line stationary.

I did notice that the night we rode it home, the regular line moved quickly, the accessible line, not so much cause you had to wait for like the 8th or 12th car. I never ended up counting.

So if you all are interested, I started a new Dining Report for our Food and Wine Trip November of 2019. It was a great trip and we ate at a lot of great places including Takumi Tei and Monsieur Paul. It should be finished pretty quickly since I only have to talk about food, LOL. Here it is!

#GettingChunky - A November 2019 Food and Wine Trip Report

Yay! I wanted to hear about Takumi Tei! We are going there for sure whenever there is a next time!

On my way over there. :moped:

I'm so glad you got on Rise and loved it so much!

Those murals at the Riviera are sooo beautiful!

Sounds like a great evening to cap off a great day!

I'm a fan of no bags for sure!
Yup me too! I have a protocol now for visiting Rise. I shove everything into my pockets and carry a thin foldable tote bag or backpack which I also put in my pockets. Then after bag check I pull out the bag and put all our random stuff into it, LOL.
78's perfect. Anything less... is not.
Word.
2 tubs? My kind of Heaven!
Right?!? I should have just stayed in her tub!
Unfortunately, while I ADORE the Nomad, I have also had pretty terrible service there. Sometimes you wait FOREVER for the check or drinks, not to mention the tables are scarce. I'll still go back over and over, but you have to just expect bad service sometimes.
That is true, it's become so packed at times, and they don't always have enough people serving or tending.
They did an awesome job!!!!
They sure did!
OOOOH! We liked this a lot. I'm sorry yours was not good.
I know! I'm disappointed. It sounded so good. Maybe because ours was perhaps the last one they sold of the night and past it prime :(

Your first day was awesome! Your rock n roller coaster pics look like mine (although it embarrasses my husband) I can’t wait to read more
LOL That's the fun part about RnRC!! We literally have to try a different pose each time we go on now.
With a HM ghostly hand, too!
A ghost had followed me home!
Not really. I always worry a bit when I do that. "It's not going to work this time. I'll have to pay all over again. People will stare."
It's never been a problem, but there ya go.
Haha that happened to me last year I think. I had purchased a new AP but I forgot to go "activate" it at the ticket counter or guest services, I just waltzed on in thinking it was already in my account...oh wait it didn't light up green/purple. I felt like such an AMATEUR. 😆
Sounds so amazing. :)
Wait, did I say that?
So... you weren't impressed, then?
Totes bored.
Decided not to watch it. :)
Good, you'd have been bored.
So... did you like it? It's not very clear from your comments.
Hated it. In fact, I will ride it for you. I'll take one for the team so you will never have to ride anything so mundane. :rotfl:
Nice score for her!
It was!!
What??? How is that even a thing?
I don't know! But I love it!
I like that! Much more relaxing.
Yup!
 You're probably right!
Of course I had to order the most caloric dish that was also the tiniest.
Very nice! Great DISmeet!
::yes::
That's too bad. Never got their drink order taken?
Don't think so :(
Sure. You twenty-year-olds can go on forever. Just wait til you hit your thirties.
Sure yeah, ok. Great! Looking forward to them!
Shame. It sure sounded good.
Yeah disappointing.
What an awesome jam-packed day!! Some day whenever I get to go back to WDW, I hope to finally get to check out Rise of the Resistance, but for now your TR will have to do!
Jackie you'd LOVE it!! It's a sensory experience!
Awesome that so many of my favorite DISers were there at the same time (I am not jealous, at all, nope, not a bit.....) 😭
We missed you!! :grouphug:
Seriously though, so great that you all were able to do your own thing and still find time to meet up together! That's THE BEST!
Yeah! I'm glad we all found the time to meet up!
We stayed at Pop in December, and couldn't believe how amazing the Skyliner was for us on our Epcot and DHS trips. Literally minutes door to door. It is SUCH an incredible timesaver, which I never would have guessed!
Right?!? I couldn't believe it, it was a game-changer for sure!!

OK I don't know about you but I really miss scanning my band, Mickey-to Mickey and watch it light up!!

For me it's the sound it makes when it goes green and you can head on in...sigh....

You are then in another queue for a bit before meeting the First Order officers who are all in full character. The amount of disdain they will gaze on you is pretty funny.

I just love that. It must be so much fun to be those CM's...I bet there was a lot of applicants!

The AT-ATs were my favorite part, you cannot help but have your jaw drop at the sight of them. Really surreal.

This was just so cool. I hope I get a chance to ride many more times because I couldn't take it all in and get pictures on one ride through.

Oh and if you're interested in the "drop" part of the ride, it can be seen starting at 3:28 or so.
It is not so bad at all, and I am one that HATES drops and I refuse to ride ToT or GoTG (which I was conned into at DCA and never again, LOL)

I am living proof of this. I was so scared of this drop I second guessed whether I should even ride so many times because I knew the drop was there. It made me worry the whole time. But now that I've done it and I know I don't have to stress about it anymore I can't wait to do this ride again...multiple times!

A ghost had followed me home!
Is this a good thing or a terrifying thing?
Haha that happened to me last year I think. I had purchased a new AP but I forgot to go "activate" it at the ticket counter or guest services, I just waltzed on in thinking it was already in my account...oh wait it didn't light up green/purple. I felt like such an AMATEUR. 😆
I'm sure there were at least half a dozen or more people saying or thinking "Wow. What a loser! Come on lady! Don't you know you need a ticket???"
Wait, did I say that?
No, actually I did.
Good, you'd have been bored.
Somehow doubt that.
Hated it. In fact, I will ride it for you. I'll take one for the team so you will never have to ride anything so mundane. :rotfl:
Thanks! You're a lifesaver!
Of course I had to order the most caloric dish that was also the tiniest.

This view is gorgeous! It makes me very excited to try out the Skyliner.
It's a great mode of transport! It makes me never want to take a bus again, LOL
RoTR sounds very exciting! Glad you and Steve were able to ride that day and planned on doing it the next. Even though I am not a Star Wars fan, I am still excited to ride it one day!
Everyone I know who is not a SW fan has loved it!! The ride technology is amazing!
Wow these are beautiful. The Riviera looks so nice, another spot I definitely want to hit next time!
It's gorgeous, definitely worth a trip!
All the food you ate that day sounded/looked amazing. Especially Steve's salad and that risotto, Yum!
We did have a pretty good eating/grazing day!
Overall it sounded like a fantastic day.

I'm looking forward to continue reading!
Thank you!!
I love that, Disney math at it's finest! :)

Halloween Party is a must!! Yay! There are so many fun Food and Wine events too, although with a toddler it may be hard to attend. Maybe you can do a solo event, LOL. I would definitely add breakfast at Topolino if you like characters. It was one of the best meals of our trip!

Haha you just think you're flush with cash but you've already spent it, figuratively, at Disney, LOL. 😉

Umm.....no. My plans get turned upside down All. The. Time.
LOL, I see that from your TRs.
Eventually you might even want to go back and do the November TR too...not sure if Disney will keep the same timing for all its US parks or just CA, but I heard a rumor DL won't be back until after the 1st of the year. And this was from a somewhat reliable source.
Your wish is my command! 😉
Are you reading my TR....we had a little bit different experience. Then again you guys are active and mobile.
I did read it, so overall did you like the skyliner or were you not a fan? Did you think they made it easy enough for those with wheelchairs or scooters to get around?
Lucky! It takes us all day just to get ready and going!
I used to be like that but since we travel so frequently it's not too bad now and because of the owners locker it's easier to prepare. Although I spend way too much time figuring out what to wear!
Old you??????? Puh-lease.... If you're old what am I dirt? :lmao:
Super fun, cute, and awesome dirt?
I hate when we get a room with two beds. We barely fit in the same bed and then all that wasted space....
I totally make Steve sleep in the other bed, we both need our space, LOL.
Yeah. Thats the other bummer about the Skyliner. Kinda makes you take a rideshare (which we really can't) or stay at your resort.

Oh no, Disney transport begins running 45 minutes before the parks open so you have plenty of time to get there! --Or so the company line says. :sad2:
Liars!!!
Oh...Just stawp! All the time you're complaining about your looks, and you're always beautiful. Even when you were a drowned rat, you still looked pretty.
Aww thank you so much, we are all our own worst critic, but I'm happy you remembered my drowned rat moment!
It sounds like they had learned a lot by three weeks later when we were there. Opening was 8AM and it still looked just like that at 6:30AM. But they let us in by 7AM and we had time to spread out.
it was significantly better in March when we were there. Of course we had the VIP tour one day but another day Steve and I went by ourselves and we had seriously the most calm and stress-free experience. It was like night and day from January.
I don't usually do super large breakfasts that early either, I'd have to be awake for a few hours before I get ravenous, that's why we usually share an entree.

Oh interesting! That's what I figured - that it was a super complex ride system, but good to know some insider information!
Wow! We never saw lines like that when we were there!
yeah that one night was crazy long!
Welcome to your new normal theme park experience!
2 hours just to get into a park! I guess forget rope drop!
That sounds good! I wish we would have made it to Japan.
I wish I tried more stuff, I really liked what I did try!
We got almost all of that, not the champagne, but it was soooo good!
It was all delicious! You can't go wrong with France!
:yay: I would have been a little freaked out being that far away from the park when the BG got called!
They told us we had 2 hours, LOL. And we figured with the skyliner being so quick, it would be easy to get there! I guess we were lucky that the skyliner didn't stop for a lengthy period of time!
They don't usually start with BG 1, often times they'll start with 7, 10, or 12.
That's what we saw too.
There has been all kinds of speculation as to what has been done with these early boarding groups. At DL, people were speculating that the early BGs were for VIPs. The conclusion people came to on the DL RotR Suoerthread was that it was just a random computer function where BGs would start.
Most CMs I've spoken to say it's random.
Interesting theory. I took a look at The Chart and they got closer to starting with group 1, just before the closure. This is DL's Chart, and I was surprised at how many times they started with group 1.

There was also speculation that the first BG number was a reflection of the expected ride performance for the day.
True they did start from that low in March.
And you thought you could before?
Haha, I guess I can't now!!
