Sharps disposals?

Does anyone know if the parks have sharps disposals in the bathrooms? I have to take shots at a specific time and will be in the park during that time. For some reason, I haven't found any info on wether they do or not. I would assume so, but I have learned not to assume anything!
Thanks in advance.

I have not noticed sharps containers in the restrooms at WDW, but someone else might know. (It is the sort of thing that I would notice, being an Infection Control Specialist).

They do have them in First Aid and they would be able to provide you with a private place to take your shots.

For your hotel, you can request a sharps container from Housekeeping.

Thank you Sue, for the information. I figured they would have a disposal in First Aid. Good to know about the hotel! Helps to not have to drag EVERYTHING down to FL with me. It is enough to take the shots, luggage and myself!
Thanks again!

We have not seen sharps disposals in bathrooms. We usually carry a plastic prescription bottle with child-proof cap for disposal on the plane and in the Parks, to be finally thown away in the container provided by our Resort.

Thank you Ambassador! Good idea. I will certainly do that (if my silly needles fit in one!). At least I know I have options. I was surprised and glad to hear the resorts have disposals for such things. I know they are providing my room with a refrigerator to keep my meds cold. Thanks again for the advice!

No sharps disposal in the restrooms. Frankly I would not give myself a shot in the restroom anyway. I would think that the first aid centers would have sharps disposal and you could go there to take your shot. I use insulin and just quietly take it at the table through my clothes with no ill effects. Then cap the needle and dispose of it later in the sharps container in the room. Also I sometimes use an old soda bottle as a sharps container.

Thank you! I really don't want to use the restroom for that purpose either! I have MS and have to take a sub-q shot every day and one IM once a week (hoping to time that one so as not to have to do it down there) in the evening. I think if I can just sit somewhere and do it, it will be no big deal. I can probably just cap it and dispose of it in the room if I need to or are too far away from a first aid station.
I really appreciate all the help. I am still adjusting to having MS and am now very aware of the challanges all persons with disabilities face. Mine are minor compared to so many others, but it is comforting to know that I can still do so many things. I would have a lot more stress about this trip if I hadn't discovered this site.

Thank YOu!

I am an insulin dependent diabetic & I always use the first aid stations. They store my insulin in the fridge there & whenever I need an injection, they provide me with a room. You fill out a brief form & everything is then kept in a bag with the associated paperwork. I can't say enough about how wonderful they have been. The staff is always very pleasant & helpful. I would definitely take advantage of their assistance. Hotels will provide you with sharps disposal containers if you ask. I carry a coffee can with me since we drive down & hotels enroute don't always have something like this.

I have a question for you...how did you get a guaranteed fridge? Right now we have reservations at POR which have fridges in all the rooms, but we may have to switch to a value & they say fridges cost extra plus are not guaranteed. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

Correct. We told them I have a medical need and they HAVE to give you one. I will bring something from my doctor, but shouldn't have to.

First Aid station but for some reason I am thinking there is another place where you can find a sharps box. I just can't recall. baby changing center perhaps?

i was lol at this thread thinking about all of the places i have given myself insulin at disney -- small world, haunted mansion, lion king, muppet movie...

How funny!!! Nope I've only ever injected at the first aid station. I have recently switched to the Novolog pen so that will probably change. I can keep it with me & then, after ordering at a restaurant (when I know how many carbs I'm eating) I can just inject at the restaurant. I'm thrilled! But I'll still need a fridge for the Lantus insulin.

Thanks everyone for the info!!!

My understanding about Lantis is that once it is open, it does not need to be refrigerated. However, it must stay within a reasonable temp range (which escapes me right now).

Hi Deb,

We met at the Northeast DISMEET in Allentown - not that I would expect you to remember me since I was just one of a very large crowd, LOL.

I always thought Lantus (which I inadvertently misspelled) had to be refridgerated. The outside box says to store between 36 & 46 degrees. But I've since read the detailed paperwork inside and it says once the vial is opened you can store it in the refridgerator OR outside as long as it's less than 86 degrees & not in bright sunlight.

Wow, I've learned yet another thing from you - you are an absolute wealth of info!!!

Thanks again!!!

There are differences with some insulins between long term storage (which wold be before you open it) and short term storage (which would be the time it takes after opening until it is used up). At least that's how I have heard Pharmacists describe it.

Yes, that must be it. You wouldn't think one little plastic cap would make that much difference. :confused3 I've been on Lantus for about a year and never knew. Though I think I'll still keep it in the fridge when possible - old habits die hard, LOL. Thanks!!!

Also, the Lantus is only supposed to be good for 28 days after it has been opened whether refrigerated or not.

I know they say that, but I've used it past that date & it worked just fine. I saw no difference & I test 4 - 5 times per day. Maybe that's because I always keep it in the fridge. I can't see throwing something away that costs so much if it works. I'm a widow & pay my own health insurance which doesn't include prescriptions so I count every penny. I guess that's a good reason to continue to keep it in the fridge.
