Hello to anyone that would like to follow along with our quick, 4 day trip down to Cozumel and back on the beautiful Disney Wonder. :flower: This cruise had been booked on opening day in 2017 and had been in jeopardy of being cancelled a couple of times :scared: due to work/vacation conflicts, but, in the end, we managed to just sqeeeeze it in there, due to us disembarking on the Veteran’s Day holiday. :thumbsup2

It was just Scott and I going this time around and it was going to be a(nother) laid back cruise with no real plans. If you've read any of our other adventures you will know that lazy is our middle name! :rotfl: I had booked Palo brunch on our first at sea day and also the Whiskey tasting that evening but apart from that we had no plan for anything, including Cozumel. This itinerary has two at sea days with Cozumel sandwiched in between them and it's a great 4 night option, that is sadly only offered occasionally out of Galveston. :sad1: On the home front, we currently have some major changes going on in our lives, with Scott taking a job overseas starting in December this year, so this trip ended up being perfect timing for a quick break for the two of us before he starts travelling and is gone from home for extended periods of time.

This is us on our last cruise. Always smiling faces when you are on a Disney cruise. Alrighty then! Let's get this trip report going.

Wednesday, January 7th

About two weeks before the cruise I booked us to stay the night before in Galveston. We can drive down in a couple of hours from home, and we often just go down the morning of the cruise, but I decided that an extra night of real vacation is always a good thing! :cheer2: We had to get our last minute things packed on Wednesday morning before heading in to work together in one car but we got it accomplished with no major disaster. :-)

I liked the old countdown better, but we had 00 days left! :jumping3:

32010999018_42a4e062c9_c.jpg

I also got to turn off my alarm…..ahhh….such a good feeling. ::yes:: I'm hoping everyone else has weird alarm habits too. I have one that's the one that I have plenty of time and then the second one that's the one where I'm rushing like crazy. Usually I get up on the second one.

45832640232_49d8a169de_c.jpg

Work dragged on by, I texted Scott every hour with the countdown to when I would be picking him up. I thought he would get sick of it, but when I forgot at 1 pm, he sent me one! We were both really looking forward to getting away that's for sure. At 3 pm on the dot, I was sitting outside his work waiting for him. :bitelip: He had a work colleague from Norway in town that wanted to say hello...ugg...doesn't she know she's holding up vacation!!

44065743690_62617ec806_c.jpg

We started the drive down to Galveston. Going through downtown Houston had a fair amount of traffic but once we got through that it was easy going.

44065743410_0a63f88e83_c.jpg

We hit some really bad rain and couldn’t see any blue sky ahead at all. Blahhh....driving in torrential rain is no fun.

44065743240_a173d0b30b_c.jpg

Once we got closer to Galveston we finally got through it and saw blue skies once again though. Scott was being a diligent trip report photographer. :thumbsup2

44969066215_a8d7f331bb_c.jpg

We turned onto Harborside Drive, only to see this ahead of us. It was the longest train in the world, and also the slowest! :crazy2: We sat for a while and then Scott found us a way to cut down a back street and work our way around it. :teeth:

44065743000_155cf5108e_c.jpg

We finally made it to the Harbor House hotel at 4:50 pm. Traffic, rain and train delays tacked about 30 minutes onto that drive, but we were there!

44969065755_538356e05a_c.jpg

Check in was quick and painless. I had booked a suite for $152.00 as they are located at the very end of each corridor so you have views to one side and also directly onto the ship channel. We were given room 301, which is on the top floor. We’ve stayed at Harbor House a few times and we love the location close to the Strand so you can go and do some walking around, but the hotel itself is fairly basic. They have refurbished since we stayed here last so it is a bit nicer than it used to be. The room rate at the time really dictates whether it's "worth it" or not. The suites have a bedroom and a separate living room area.

These were the views from the windows. Prime viewing location for getting up early and watching the Wonder come in. :woohoo:

After taking a quick nose around, unpacking the few things we needed for the night, and getting trip report worthy photographs of the room done , we were ready to head out in search of beverages. :drinking1 It was a pretty sunset tonight as we walked over to the Strand. We didn’t have any real plans in place and were going to see what was open.

45832642352_96dd86f948_c.jpg

The Strand was absolutely dead, with nobody around at all. :scratchin We ended up at Stuttgarden Tavern, which is where we had spent a few hours while fog delayed on a previous cruise. The place was fairly quiet, with a few other people in there.

32011002118_6328471656_c.jpg

First drinks of the vacation….beer. :earseek: I know, I couldn’t decide what I wanted and they had a huge beer menu, so I just went with a recommendation off that. :confused3 It was surprisingly really good! Someone is very ready for me to get the photo taken and get on with drinking his drink! :rotfl:

45832642162_f8c015d0aa_c.jpg

We had a snack of chips and salsa there and had one more beer each and then decided to find somewhere else. We walked the Strand but didn’t find anything open other than shops that sold beer that you could sit on the sidewalk and drink. I fired up Yelp to see if it could help us find anything, but as we got to a corner and paused to look, there was a building down the side street that was all lit up with German flags flying and we could see a deck up on the 3rd floor with people sitting drinking. :cheer2: It looked very promising and so we decided to give it a try. The first and second floors were empty, it was really weird, but we made it to the third floor and found out we were at….Stuttgarden Tavern. :lmao: Apparently Stuttgarden moved, and we had actually been at Muchacos at the last place, but weren’t quite clever enough to have figured that out! ;)

32011001738_43cfc523bf_c.jpg

New Stuttgarden was a nice location, but the drinks weren’t as good. Scott said the beer tasted watered down. I had a glass of wine which is pretty hard to mess up, but the sight of the waitress wiping the lipstick off the glass at the bar before she set it down in front of me wasn’t too thrilling. Bleckk…:rolleyes2 It was a one and done at this place.

45832641962_3cc41685cf_c.jpg

At just gone 7 pm we decided to make our way back to the hotel and to eat at Olympia Grill, which is located directly underneath it. We’ve always had good luck with the food and drinks there.

32011001408_de940e91c3_c.jpg

There is a semi-submersible rig behind this statue…for those that are interested in all things oilfield – which Scott is. :upsidedow

45832641422_dc351a5d71_c.jpg

Time to get a good drink going! :dance3: We both got froo-froo drinks off their menu, although I don’t remember what they were called, I can tell you that both were really good. ::yes::

32011000798_1cc2030d63_c.jpg

Scott got a fish dish and I got hummus for our meals. The hummus was really good, but really garlicky! I think I managed to burp it up for the entire next day, which you probably didn’t really want to know…but now you do.

45832641012_c2c48074b5_c.jpg

32011000328_7dfe2371ea_c.jpg

And instead of dessert…..yummy drinks. :dancer: Mine was a mudslide and Scott’s was a scotch of some kind. Mine was really good.

45832640642_7122572a78_c.jpg

It was just before 9 pm when we left there to go to our room. Galveston definitely rolls up the carpets early in the week, I think there was only one table with people on it when we walked out of the place. Back at the hotel, we both thought the corridor to our room looked really spooky. :scared1: The lights were just dim enough that it made it kind of creepy in a fun kind of way.

45832639912_cbd6e208bd_c.jpg

Here we are cracking ourselves up about the spooky corridor. We are the funniest people we know, especially after an evening of drinks. :lmao:

32010999988_e83cb86021_c.jpg

We wrapped up the day with an early night as we were in bed by 9:30 pm. I should also mention that you get a free bread and butter pudding as dessert at Olympia Grill if you are staying at Harbor House. We took ours to go, but it wasn't very good and we ditched it after a couple of mouthfuls. With the intention of getting up and seeing the Wonder come in in the morning we headed to bed! Excitement awaits in the morning!! :flower1:

I love to read your trip reports. If I wasn’t there, which I wasn’t :guilty:, Ive been on enough to enjoy the stories :lovestruc Looking forward to the arrival of the Wonder

You will be on the next one! Look for the East bound Panama Canal by @disneyfaninaz - she's in the process of writing it so it's easy to find because it should be close to the top of all the posts. It's backwards from our itinerary but fun to see it! Or, even easier, I see she has a link in her signature above. :)

Woohoo, I'm in as well!!!
I see you still have two countdowns for 2019, so assuming Scott's new job is not putting any cruises into jeopardy (otherwise, screw work, there are cruises to be taken!!! )

We got off the Fantasy on November 3rd and our server told us that Susannah has been promoted and is going to be a hostess at Palo out front??? So that means no more Wonder for her??

We got lucky and the two cruises we have booked will fall into Scott's time at home (assuming his rotation goes to plan!) - thank goodness - he'd be really sad to miss them! Ha ha!!! Yes, Susana has been promoted. She starts in the new position when she gets back from vacation on Saturday. I'm happy for her, but it means she won't be a server any more. And that position doesn't exist on the classics so, assuming she likes it, she will be on the Fantasy or Dream from now on. It was all new servers on the Wonder when we were there, but Judy was on vacation. We'll request her from now on though.

Are you doing a trip report for your Fantasy cruise? I know the answer is probably no! LOL

I'm following your EBPC! :thumbsup2 Loving it. I should be a good fellow-diser and post on yours! LOL We are on the WBPC in February for the first time. I'm soaking up everything I can get.
Oh my gosh! You will love it! It was easily the least planned cruise I have ever taken. I loved the amount of things to do on sea days, especially in the evenings.

We heard that quite a lot of cast/crew members were leaving after we docked from the EBPC cruise for their vacations. New people coming on. Fortunately, a lot of them will be back when we go on our Alaskan cruise.

Haha, you would be correct in assuming no TR this time :sad2: I suppose I could do a truncated one that just includes mostly photos.....haha, we'll see :rotfl2:

Oh and yes, you are correct, she will be on the Fantasy because the position is to be the head hostess for both Palo and Remy. A position not required on the classics.

Thursday, November 8th

Today is the day!! I still prefer the old app for the countdown. :) There was something about that suitcase and fireworks. This is cute, but not AS cute in my opinion.

I woke up at just gone 5 am and checked the Marine Traffic app to see where the Wonder was. :sail: She was still making her way in, so I rolled over and tried to sleep some more. That wasn’t going to happen, and between checking the app and hopping in and out of bed I managed to wake Scott up as well.

45882399901_0e8b8c6ac8_c.jpg

At just before 6 am the sunrise was just starting to crack on the horizon

45882400871_114a37c42a_c.jpg

We opened the curtains so that we could see down the ship channel and lay in bed while we waited on the Wonder. We saw her turn into the ship channel and just before 6 am she was making the turn in the turning basin to back into the dock.

45158173254_a3264af4e4_c.jpg

We got up and went to the windows that faced directly onto the ship channel. We were able to get the windows open so it was easy to take photos. It was a really pleasant morning outside.

And all the ropes were dropped into position already.

It takes a while for them to get all the way to the pier, but she was eventually there and docking at about 6:40 am.

45158177494_c6925a9f22_c.jpg

We continued to sit by the window and we watched a couple of shrimp boats working the channel right after. It seemed like a weird place to do some shrimping but... :confused3

45832684442_55aa36c37b_c.jpg

The gulls were happy to join in and at one point there were dolphins swimming alongside the boat too. You can see them on the right hand side.

45158178214_5669080898_c.jpg

Pelicans hitched a ride on the back of the boat as well. It was a hive of activity!

Not long after the Wonder came in the Carnival Valor arrived as well. She definitely looked shabby compared to the Wonder. ::yes:: What's the saying?? A picture is worth a thousand words.

We got ourselves ready and went and grabbed a cup of coffee and some breakfast from the breakfast room on the second floor. :coffee: The complimentary breakfast that is offered is very basic. Coffee, juice, cereal, instant oatmeal, yogurt, toast and bagels. I got some oatmeal and a yogurt and Scott got a bagel. The room was busy and there aren’t many tables so we took it back to our room and ate in there. It wasn’t photo-worthy apparently. :rotfl:

We didn’t really have a game plan for when we were going to head to the port but we could see people leaving and eventually the wait was killing us and we decided to make our way over to EZCruise Parking at about 10:15 am. Scott snapped this photo of the Wonder while we were driving along Harborside Drive.

30943211817_0c59c77973_c.jpg

We were parked and waiting to board the shuttle to the port by 10:30 am. It was busy and the shuttle filled up fairly quickly.

44969128675_e1923fe845_c.jpg

It only takes about 5 minutes to get to the port and luggage drop off was quick and easy. We had little to no wait for security and check in would have gone a little quicker had I not somehow managed to have Scott registered with a UK passport. :scared1: I have no clue how all of a sudden that showed up in his profile, but they got it all sorted out and were sitting down waiting to board by 11:15 am. :thumbsup2

45158180144_f71e21c569_c.jpg

We got boarding group 1 and were told that the cabins wouldn’t be ready until 2 pm today. We read the navigator and people watched while we waited. Here is the overall Navigator.

Mickey came for photos dressed in his holiday sweater. So cute.

30943212497_32d224ce68_c.jpg

We saw them taking photos of the family of the day and at noon they announced them and began the boarding process with concierge. We were walking on board at about 12:10 pm.

44969129685_709b642f46_c.jpg

The atrium looked pretty with all of the Christmas decorations up. We stopped and took a couple of photos.

We decided to go to Cabanas to eat as it’s nice to just pick and choose what you want. I got a bit of this and that.

45882400121_16e66d09fb_c.jpg

Scott got this, and the fries looked delicious so I stole a couple.

30943213207_7c8af212b7_c.jpg

We got talking to a crew member who usually worked behind the scenes in Animator’s Palate. He was responsible for making sure the bread was sliced exactly to size and to get all of the different breads into the basket the correct way. He was really nice and really proud of his job. :goodvibes He stood talking to us for ages, and I began to feel a bit guilty because the other serves were giving him the evil eye. Ha ha! Cabanas was really beginning to get busy and we’d been there an hour so we moved on to give others the room to sit down. Ah….Cove how we missed you. :cloud9: Super nice and peaceful, although a bit dreary outside.

45158181414_317e577aeb_c.jpg

There was a fog rolling in, and we really hoped it wouldn’t get bad. Galveston can get really foggy and we’ve had cruises delayed a couple of times due to the fog, so we crossed our fingers and hoped for the best.

45832686982_84c5d89f1f_c.jpg

Here’s Goofy – you can see how gray and horrible it is by now.

32011028688_4ebf917a80_c.jpg

But these make life better! I had the drink of the day, which was a Bay Breeze ,and Scott had a Tiki Wheat beer, which is a new offering on draft out of Galveston (at least for us), they used to only sell Shiner Bock on draft.

44969131095_903a262ae6_c.jpg

For anyone that has followed along with us before, you may remember “the Crocs” that I have been trying to get Scott to ditch for several years. Well, drum roll….new crocs!! :thumbsup2 Finally!!

45832687122_0d375eac59_c.jpg

I decided to see if they were really serious about the 2 pm cabin opening time and skipped down to deck 8 to see if they were allowing access to staterooms at 1:30 pm. The blocking tape thingy that they use wasn't there, so we grabbed our bags and went down to deck 2. Of course our deck wasn’t open yet. I bet deck 8 was open due to the concierge rooms. :scratchin Annnyyyywayy….we schlepped our bags back up to deck 9 and ordered another round of drinks instead. :flower:

30943214207_70a68ab24e_c.jpg

More gray yuckiness but the fog seemed to have lifted and it was just low clouds now, so that was good news. :yay:

45832687332_12603e5125_c.jpg

Of course by the time we’d finished messing about with going up and down and getting drinks it was now 2 pm and the cabins were open. We sat for about 5 minutes and then gave up trying to be patient and went down to find our cabin. I had booked another porthole room because we had really enjoyed it on our cruise last November. Same location but on the opposite side of the ship.

30943214517_f81c21062c_c.jpg

45832687592_8537c9249b_c.jpg

I also bought the holiday blanket. It was really cute. The backpack is the same as it has been for a few years now, although they have done away with the luggage tags, or at least we didn’t get them.

30943214897_8824932cbf_c.jpg

45832688002_58525b0064_c.jpg

I had our door magnets packed in our carry on so I put those out. I bought the Mickey Jedi to use on our Star Wars cruise on the Fantasy but it didn’t arrive in time so this was the first outing for him. Cabin 2050 was going to be home for the next few days.

30943215197_c0d74498ab_c.jpg

The fueling ship was right by us, although it was really long and you couldn't see the majority of it.

45832688362_6a07b6cc92_c.jpg

We hung out in the room until it was time for muster. We were in the Walt Disney Theatre and got there about 3:50 pm so we were a bit early. It’s not bad though when you can sit and wait rather than stand on deck.

30943215617_6316378eff_c.jpg

45158183604_5bb9951d4b_c.jpg

Muster was uneventful, although the megaphone didn’t work for our coordinator person so they had a tough time trying to shout! We were back in our cabin by 4:20 pm and were just in time to see the fueling ship pulling away.

30943216027_31e5e88cf4_c.jpg

Our one suitcase had been delivered by the time we got back so we did a super-fast unpacking session. We were done in less than 10 minutes. :teleport: We grabbed cameras and went up to deck 9 to see the sail away party. :dance3: It had already begun by the time we got there but I was glad to get the unpacking behind us.

44969133795_a684fc50d6_c.jpg

I work with the lady in this family, she has the cutest two little girls. ::yes:: It was a coincidence that we were booked on the same cruise. We ran into them for sail away but actually didn’t see them very often for the rest of the time.

30943216417_b5394c110b_c.jpg

Time to get drink refills on our way up to deck 10 to watch us leave. :woohoo: I got a Dole Whip with rum. I don’t think I have had one before, not that I remember anyway, but I definitely prefer a Konk Cooler. The mix they use didn’t taste all that great to me. :drinking:

44969134035_a73c2dd1e3_c.jpg

While we were getting drinks we started moving. I snapped this of the beautiful gray skies! :)

30943216957_f9d7143902_c.jpg

More picturesque views of Galveston. It isn’t the prettiest port in the world when the skies are blue, but it really looks quite dismal when the skies are gray and nasty. :teeth:

44969134305_2dc7b73f93_c.jpg

There were lots of dolphins around though and Scott managed to snap a couple of photos of them on our way out.

30943217337_6ff8b0481f_c.jpg

44969134495_91f99ce386_c.jpg

There were no Del Monte crates or cargo containers  ….although this one may have been blocking the view.

30943217587_699ba9b0c7_c.jpg

Heading on out and it was really breezy and chilly. :cold:

44969134695_d1f7d4f88a_c.jpg

Quick selfie while Scott had my hair pinned down by his arm so it wasn’t flying all over the place. :lmao:

30943217917_13a7e9185f_c.jpg

We went over to the other side to try and get out of the breeze a bit and we were successful for a little while.

45882411181_96e9db4e17_c.jpg

Eventually we had had enough of the chill and went back down to our cabin. It was about 5:10 pm by now and so we had some time to kill.

30943218307_9003c0594f_c.jpg

We watched the waves go by and then this cargo ship, which was really close because we were still in the ship channel.

It had a strange end to it as it was completely open….which made we wonder how that works in seas with big waves? :scared1:

Lots of tankers and other ships sitting out at sea. It’s always interesting to me to see all the lights on the horizon.

We thought about going to see the show tonight, but that’s about as far as that went, thought only – no action! We did get ourselves moving though to make it to the Crown and Fin for trivia. ;) By now it was snack time and they have chips, salsa, wings and hot dogs there every evening.

Beverages for the brain…ha ha.

Tonight was 70’s trivia and it was fairly well attended although the trivia sessions on the first evening are always a little thin on the ground.

We did fairly well, but didn’t get enough right to win, although we came fairly close. I think we were in the top 3. The trivia was done at 8 pm and so we had 15 minutes to pop back to the cabin on our way to dinner. Tonight we were in Tritons. Our rotation was Tritons, Animators Palate, Animators Palate and Tiana’s Place. This was waiting for us in our room. Yummy!! Scott had bought it when we were getting ready for sail away.

Our fridge had a nice combination of wine and water. :o

We hadn’t requested any servers (I never do) but our assistant server was Christian from Costa Rica. We had him as our server a year or so ago, on the first cruise after the Wonder’s refurbishment so it was nice to see a familiar face. Lots of the crew that we know have either transferred, left DCL, or were on vacation. Our server was Joel from the Philippines. I had Christian take a quick photo of us so that we could get at least one decent one.

Dinner tonight was the Red Wine Posc Pear Salad for me and the Duck Confit for Scott.

Then rack of lamb for me and Chateubriand for Scott.

We asked for a souffle and a crème brulee for dessert but Joel decided we needed fattening up and brought us a souffle each as well as the crème brulee.

We thought about going and seeing what was going on over in Azure, but sleepiness won out and we decided to go to bed as soon as dinner was over. :rolleyes1 We were back in our cabin by 10 pm and this little snail was waiting to send us to bed. :cloud9:

Up next...At sea day and Palo Brunch (without Susana. :worried:)

OMG!! Don't you just love watching your ship come in to port! What an amazing view you had! We saw dolphins when we docked in Galveston too.

Am I remembering incorrectly? I thought Texas had some weird law that you couldn't get alcohol until you were so many miles away from land - did that change or did I make that up? Either way you had some yummy drinks on the first day and WELL DONE SCOTT on the Moet and Chandon :thumbsup2 Such a smart man you've married

Love watching the ship come in the morning of our cruise, I always feel bad for people onboard that have to leave, cause I know in a week that will be us!
Love the red Holiday blanket, great keepsake!

Harbor House does have great views for watching the ship come in - and even better you can do it in your PJs. :lovestruc

Yes, they can only sell certain brands out of Galveston until you are 12 miles out. I've learned to just go with the drink of the day - much easier. :thumbsup2

I can relate to that, the day you finally get to sail is the beginning of the end. Thankfully placeholders give us something to look forward to. :goodvibes

Thx for sharing.

Thanks for following along. :wave2:

Joining in! Looks like a fun first day. How cool to watch the Wonder come in the early morning and dock. That shrimp boat was getting a lot of action, I bet all the birds and dolphins were hoping for some easy shrimp.

Thanks for joining in. It was kind of hypnotizing to watch that shrimp boat, there were two of them and we watched them for quite a while. :teeth:

Hoping to get some more done this weekend after the holiday.
