Now with a certain someone gone and JJ Abrams back at the helm for 9 I’m interested to see how this ends.
Ugh I know. I really wish rian was directing 9, I enjoyed what he did with this movie. I feel like this film is gonna be polarizing in some ways, but I think he did a great job of creating some original ideas with the plot and character development

Yeah it’s quite possible episode 9 has new flavor while having nostalgic similarities as well since episode 8 was so different.

That I agree with. I was hoping she was related to someone we knew but not a Skywalker.
I've read some interesting spec a few months ago that she may be related to Palpatine based on Luke's comment that he's only ever seen her kind of power once before and people read that to mean the other was Palpatine.

Just got back from watching it - and I'm very mixed about it. Some moments were very well executed - but so much fell flat (particularly in that first hour and a half or so). The tone was strange in places - particularly some of the humor (which seemed to go for self-deprecation but came off as cringeworthy). The Finn/Rose storyline seemed like a boondoggle and padding. But I have to admit I loved Benicio Del Toro's character (and porgs - I really wasn't expecting that). The last hour made up for a lot - but I'm wondering if on a second viewing it's going to seem like that first part is so much treading water. I was also surprised at how much some of the CGI stood out (not in a great way) - particularly on that certain character when Luke heads back to the tree after Rey leaves.

I went in blind - spoiler free and having avoided most anything about the movie. I didn't want to walk in with expectations and theories. I hadn't even watched the trailers. I didn't hate it - I liked it better than TFA - but I can't say any of it really resonated with me at all (except the moment at the end - which was done beautifully with the call back to binary sunset in Episode IV). I do recall some discussion on these boards in the past months going into deep theories about Rey and Kylo, Luke's role, Snoke's origin and motivation, etc. Interesting stuff - but the movie plays the story about as straight as possible - and mostly plows through without really raising deeper issues.

Really curious how they end this trilogy. This movie leaves a lot on the table as to where both the villains and heroes go from here. Given that Abrams isn't known for fantastic finishes, I'm a bit skeptical. I'm glad I saw it - lifelong fan of the franchise - but I can't say I'll revisit it more than a second viewing (which happened with TFA too)

Well I read spoilers. Not because I’m that damn curious but just because I thought of myself as a “it’s in the middle that counts and seeing how it happens as opposed to what happens is why I got to see the movie.” Needless to say I don’t know how I feel. I kind of feel bad for Lucas
because he said it’s about the Skywalker family and now it’s down to zero. Granted we still don’t know about Rey from what I’ve read (they mentioned it in a way that it was skeptical but movies are our interpretations of it) but that’s besides the point

I’m not sure if this is a spoiler but since no one answered it in “giant spoilers!!!” I’m going to leave it out in the open:

Before I buy hundreds of dollars worth of stuff like I did for B.B.-8 I need to know, are porgs cannibals? My other question about them I can only answer when I see the movie

Ok. Well, I just saw the film. I have been looking forward to this film for a very long time along with everyone on here I'm sure. However, I have to sleep on this one. So, I'll post my comments and reactions tomorrow.

Wasn't he talking about Kylo? I'm pretty sure he specifically said in Kylo after that statement.

I agree. It felt like it was going for the lighthearted tone of some of the Marvel movies and it was just strange. I mean, the movies have always had comedy, C-3P0 was great at that. Although I did like when Luke brushed off his shoulder.

and porgs - I really wasn't expecting that

The porgs were great! Thankfully, since I bought a stuffed one...

particularly on that certain character when Luke heads back to the tree after Rey leaves.

He did look strange at first, but at times he looked really good and I was convinced he was a puppet.

I have so many feelings about this movie. First, I think it was just too long. Second, I can't believe they killed who they killed! I'm devastated. It was really beautiful, and perfect and whatnot, but my poor heart.

This is the spoiler thread so I can be explicit with what I say right?

Without making it too much of a spoiler, you are correct, not CGI.

I also saw the movie last night. My DD18 loved it. I'm more on the fence. There were definitely some great moments, but overall it just felt disjointed to me. In the end it really didn't move the story along as much as I would have liked.

Again I'm in that spot of not sure to bring the 8 year old. Anxious to hear about intensity and violence levels compared to the force awakens and rogue one.
Don't know if it matters but my 7 year old god daughter loved it last night.

There were moments when it really worked (loved the shoulder brush as well) - but agree that there were other moments where it felt off and out of place. The dialogue between Poe and Hux at the beginning was one of them - it just went too long. And I kept thinking: "This guy is commanding the Imperial fleet??" I tried imagining that scene with Grand Moff Tarkin - couldn't see it. Five minutes into the movie and they reduced one of the main villains to the level of Colonel Klink.

I've read your trip report - excellent use of the porg! I thought they'd be too cutesy, but they didn't go overboard.

I couldn't really tell - it wasn't nearly as bad as what they did in Episode I, but it also wasn't quite the OT character either. The expression was a bit weird - I think that threw me (and just not expecting that scene at all). I did like the end of the scene - where they shot them from behind while the fire was blazing. It was a quiet moment that was needed in the film.

It matters - I've tried thinking about how kids see these movies (rather than someone like me who has spent decades immersed in them). If it works on their level and they grow up with the same love of that universe that a lot of us did, we'll be enjoying SW for a very long time.

My 11 year old DS loves Star Wars. My 10 year old DD claims she does not like Star Wars but she does. She just doesn't want anyone to know about it. She will deny it until she is blue in the face but loves her Rey PJ's and is not upset that she has to go see the movie tomorrow. I am not sure if their friends are into it or not. Pokemon and Shopkins seem to be more important then Star Wars. Hopefully more kids like it too so that is can stick around longer.

Enjoyed it. Maybe a bit too long, but a roller coaster of emotions and much darker movie than a lot of them. (I mean the good guys were reduced to what? two dozen? Yikes).

The casino heist just felt out of place though, but I understand what they were trying to do with it (war is a machine .. is there really good guys or bad guys when it comes to war) .. just didn't seem to fit with the rest of the movie.

The comedy worked, and who doesn't love the Porgs?

My son (5 yo) took well to his parents seeing the movie without him. He somehow accepts that it is "not for little kids" and was just happy enough to hear all about it from us. He didn't even see the movie and he was crying "happy tears" when I told him some parts!
(though he roots for the bad guys a bit too much, heh).

I had children later in life. I COULD have had children in my mid-20s (like most people) and I could have had young kids that would have been the perfect age for the prequels, but life had me wait until I was in my late 30s to have children, and frankly I'm glad (for Star Wars reasons -heh). These movies were a great way (way better than the prequels) to introduce the next generation to the Star Wars Universe. Better stories, better characters, just better.

Watched it and for the most part hated it, which sucks. After TFA I read a lot of criticism and how people didn't like it and I thought they were crazy, but now I'm one of them with TLJ.

I found the humour to be bad and low hanging and the overall writing was so bad. The whole island with Rey and Luke I thought was a colossal waste of time, trim that to a quarter of the time and it's not a 153 minutes movie. The best parts were Rey and Kylo and there was not enough of that. I liked the porgs more then I thought I would but that's about it.

Ok a few things after sleeping on it.

1. BB-9E really wasn’t in the movie much at all after being pushed in merchandise.

2. Phasma didn’t have a huge role in TFA and didn’t have a big role in the one either. She’s now gone.

3. I loved having Yoda in the movie.

4. I’ve got to think Rey is not just a nobody.

5. Cherie didn’t have many appearances.

6. Mark Hamill was great in this movie.

7. What the hell happens to Leia? Kathleen Kennedy has said she’s not in episode 9 and she didn’t die in 8. I was so prepared for her to die and then she didn’t.

My thoughts FWIW...

While watching the movie I was completely blown away. I couldn't get enough and I loved it. I think it had some of THE BEST moments in franchise history. I initially came out of the theater saying it was definitely the best since the originals, and maybe as good or better than some of them. Not perfect, but darn near close to it. Now that I've calmed down a bit and read some people's thoughts on them, I can see that it has a lot of problems, and I don't think I'll like it as much on rewatches.

I loved all of the Luke/Rey/Kylo stuff that I think I completely ignored how slow and somewhat pointless the rest of it ended up being. The movie was just too long and the pacing wasn't very good. There are some things I wish went differently, but overall I still loved it and I can't wait to see it again.

I thought the Snoke twist was cool, but I also thought they made it too obvious that it was about to happen. I was still so pumped when they started fighting together though. I felt like I was watching something from WWE. But I realized mid fight, that if Kylo was now good and Snoke was gone, what the hell were they going to do for the next movie? I also wasn't sure why they had so much trouble with the guards. They should have been able to wipe them out without flinching.

I was terrified they were going to kill Luke in this movie, or undo his legacy. I think the flirted with the later, but actually handled it really well and in a very relatable way. I wish he wasn't gone, and when I realized he was force projecting and Kylo hadn't killed him, I was so excited he wasn't going to die. I hate that I was letdown just a few moments later. But I think they handled it in the best way possible.

It just sucks that there won't be a Skywalker for episode 9, and that they killed off the only 2 of the remaining big 3 that are still alive in real life. But it was great that they gave us one last Luke movie, and honestly he wouldn't have had much to do if they kept him around. I do wish we had gotten one more epic light saber battle from him though.

I think the comedy at the beginning was kind of shaky but got better as the film went on. My assessment is I really didn’t like the first quarter to third of the film and I thought a lot of the Rey-Luke story dragged on. But once the climax of Rey and kylo on the star destroyer happened (if you catch my drift) I think things started to fall into place
