That horrible QUESTION...

Don't you solo and couples out there hate the question that many people ask when you mention your upcoming trip to WDW------" Why are you going? You won't have fun without kids? Arn't you a little old to go to Disney? You are going to blow money on WDW again, don't you have something better to spend your money on???----

Insert your horrible question here...

How do you respond...

We just say we didn't have kids so we wouldn't have to compete with them for Mickey's affection...That usually does the trick LOL

:bounce: How about you? Are people jealous or just don't understand?

Well, by now most of my friends are used to me....they just roll their eyes, but are nice about it. I don't ask how they can go to CanCun again and they don't ask me about WDW, it's sort of an agreement we've reached ;)

With family, I'm lucky; although not Disney, they have their own place that they go back to over and over. They understand the attraction of finding someplace that you love enough to keep going back vacation after vacation.

With other friends and co-workers there are also a few that understand. The others, in the past, I've just given them so much information that they don't even go there with the questions anymore. They are too afraid that my answer will take an hour or two out of their day. Now they just ask where I'm going, I tell them WDW and they tell me to have a good time. End of conversation.

PhotobearSam, I like the answer about not having to compete for Mickey's affections. Mind if I use that sometime?

We just laugh and say "Well, it's obvious you've never been there or you'd know!". We can tell by the puzzled looks that they just "don't get it". What amazes me is how many of our friends have families and don't go on any vacations at all. I think that's sad. It doesn't have to take a lot of money to get away and have fun for a few days. Some of my best memories are of going on vacation every year with my parents, yet all we did was rent a cabin at a state park and ate most of our meals there.

Our grown sons think my husband and I are crazy for going to WDW in November! They've both just recently moved out (ages 23 & 27). They quit wanting to go to WDW with us as soon as they reached those teen years. They preferred going with church youth and school groups than going with their parents. It's been 20+ yrs. since our last "family" trip. My husband and I are so excited about this trip. We plan on going on every single roller coaster, ride, and seeing all the shows. We are staying onsite at the Polynesian and have asked for a lagoon view for those romantic evenings after the park. The boys think we have lost our minds. All we can think about is being able to do it all, eating some great food, and "getting to know each other" all over again with some help from Mickey and the gang! We'll add other trips in the future to Europe, the Caribbean, etc., but we wanted to start our new adverture with Walt and friends. :p :pinkbounc :bounce: ;)

Nobody has really given DH and me any guff about it. We have a balance, I guess. We married in Vegas and then honeymooned at Disneyland. Then again, I have a reputation for doing my own thing and casting conventionality to the wind. If it's fun to me, I'm there. People will think what they want and life's too short to worry about that. And besides, People who ask those kinds of questions just don't know how much fun WDW can be. We take our time and worry about nothing when we're there. Having no kids along can make it soooo much more relaxing. I'm sure we'll love to take our children when we have them, but for now we enjoy making it a cozy twosome.

My coworkers/friends just ignore it and chalk it up to my being a big fan of Disney. A couple did "question" my DVC purchase, but backed off after I explained it. Actually, the most "uncomfortable" question I ever got was at WDW itself. I was riding the bus from All Star Sports to MK for opening and there was this little child sitting across from me who saw I was alone. Being concerned, he asked where my family was, which I explained that I come to WDW by myself. He then asked a few follow up questions (like why I didn't bring my kids, etc) until his mother stepped in. It didn't really bother me, as he was just curious like most little kids, although it did make that bus ride a little weird.

People always ask that question on any trip we decide to go on. But it's mainly comments like "it must be nice to go where ever you want" or "i wish I had enough $$ to go on vacations like you, It must be nice" Real sarcastic like.
I tell them if they save thier $$ instead of going to a bar every Wed, fri, and Sat night they could afford it. They don't like to hear it. IMHO I really don't think it's anyones business where i decide to go on vacation and how much it costs and saying I won't have fun there (WDW) because I don't have kids. If they would actually try to save $$ and go on vacation the would probably see why I go to WDW or on a Cruise. But sometimes I get a thrill out of them being jelous. Oh well, think smart and play hard, that's what I always say. LOL
BTW this was not directed to anyone here at the DIS. Just some of my "friends" here in MS.
Rant over

I get one of the following questions:

1. Won't you be lonely going alone?
2. What fun will you have going solo?
3. Isn't there anywhere else you'd want to go?
4. Going solo sounds selfish.

Love these questions and this is what I answer.

1. Nope
2. Lots
3. Nope
4. Maybe a little.

This is a chance for me to become a great, big kid again. To leave all my stresses at the door. As much fun as I have going with family, I have just as much, if not a little more, going solo. I get to go where I want, when I want. See what I want and skip what I don't. Dine where I want (especially nice sit-down restaurants -- try that with a 6 1/2, 3 1/2 & 1 1/2-year-old nephews). I love doing EE and jus strolling quietly down Main Street. I love doing EE @ EPCOT and sitting at one of the tables facing the fountains, grab a quick breakfast and just soak everything in. To be honest, I really don't care what others think. A couple of years ago I decided to get my picture taken with as many characters as I could and you know what???? I had a BLAST!!!! I stood patiently in line with all the little kids and waited my turn and got some great shots!! I take one real vacation a year and for the past 5 years, it's been to WDW.

I've been Disney Crazy ever since the first time my parents took me to WDW in 1975, so my family all understand! Hey..it's their fault anyway :) They started it :)

My hubby is now also Disney Crazy like me...his family doesn't quite get it, not having been to WDW before, but someday, they will. We've been working on them for a few years now :)

The others who think we're crazy just don't get it, but again, they have THEIR thing. We don't drink, smoke or have any other expensive hobbies, so we vacation :)

We don't have mini-vacations, we like to save up for a nice big Disney trip, with our dollar so bad, we have to save for awhile.

We also married in Vegas and honeymooned in DL....we just say that we're enjoying it for ourselves now...and when we have kids, we will enjoy it through them :)

Cool, Timon! We had a blast at my wedding....:) The night before, my dad, fiance and I played black jack til 4am. We were trying to get our wedding comped!

Just kidding....:) We did get a few free meals out of that night though....:)

When I mention to my friends who are parents that I'm going to WDW solo, they are usually envious that I can get away without the kids!

With the Canadian dollar the way it is, I know that we will need a few years of saving to go again...:bounce:

I usually say that my inner child has kidnapped and I have to go where she drags me!!! No, I say it's the most magickal place in the world and need my dose of magick once a year.

My husband and I have gone every year since we met... that's about 5 years now. My dad "gets it" althought when
I told him about this years trip he thought I was getting a bit obsessive. My DH's parents think I am a wacko and have
turned their son into one too.... <JK>

I love going to Disney World... its the only place around that I can literally forget I am an adult and play for a solid period of time. I would go more often if I could afford it, in fact its probably one of the few reason I go to work each day.

Sad? Nope.... I'm ecstatic!

Only you guys understand! Not many do! Most people don't feel the magic like true Disney Afficionados. How can you NOT want to go back? Going solo or with just one is great. And you are right, people understand renting a beach cottage every year, but not a Disney trip every year.

I used to go for long weekends to Vermont a couple times a year. No one thought that was strange. But when I tell them I am going to WDW for the second time in a year, they don't get it. So, I just come here and read and post with people who DO u nderstand.

Generally when people ask me that, I usually counter with - Didn't you feel the magic while you were there? That usually makes them wander off wondering... How come I don't feel the magic?

(Also, they usually have kids and their WDW trip was not especially great, so let's just decide to pity them, they don't feel the magic.:earsboy:

The one I thought was really funny was when another teacher asked me, like I was being totally wierd, "What are you going to do there by yourself-Ride the rides?" to which I responded "Oh, yes! And I can't wait to ride Dumbo!" Boy, did that shut her up!
Sometimes my students will say, "What's with you and Disney? It's like you're addicted or something." And I always tell them "Some people smoke, drink, gamble, do drugs, watch pornography, etc. Since I don't do any of those things, I think my addiction is OK. " Since I deal with teenagers, a lot of whom are struggling with some of those less suitable addictions, it's a good opportunity.

I finally told my MOm I was going to WDW alone...her response.."don't you want to share it with someone you love (meaning DH)" I told her No I want to explore WDW for the first time on my own..at my own pace....I still don't think she get's it.

i'm all ranted out on this topic, so short reply.

basically, i don't bother telling anti-Disney people (very common in the unforgiving city of NY) where i'm going. it's none of their business, esp if they're gonna give me crap about where i choose to vacation.
:p sometimes i mention i'm going to florida. i saw someone (a fellow NYer) post that they tell people they're going to Reedy Creek, a small town in central florida with only one "main street". hehe. silly.

anyway, yeah Disney is my addiction, and yeah hey it sure is a lot better than drugs or alcohol, etc. ;)

I think most of my co-workers just don't get it. My DH and I have our routines that make us happy. That includes going to a couple of Nascar races a year, going to Irish Fest in Milwaukee and doing something Disney every year. Since we bought into DVC this is even easier. This year we did the 7 day Disney cruise, a long weekend at Disneyland, and we'll be doing a long weekend at WDW.

My co-workers think I'm nuts, but as stated in a previous post, I don't question them about their lifestyle (going out to lunch every day, going out drinking 3-4 times a week, doing golf every weekend). They do what they want to have fun and so do we.

We aren't blessed with children but that doesn't mean we can't be kids ourselves and enjoy Disney! In fact there are times I wish they would make a child-free day at one of the parks. No I know it isn't going to happen but it sure would be nice!
