Hello! I posted here June/July 2018 asking for advice for taking my terminally ill sister and her teens on a crowdfunded “wish trip.” I got some great advice, and I wanted to create a trip report for others interested in doing the same. It may take some time to complete the report, but if anyone has any questions about our experience in the meantime, feel free to post them here and I’ll do my best to answer them.

This is a very honest report of our experience, so it’s the good (amazing memories made and pixie dust) and the bad (terminal illness often comes with unfortunate realities). My intention in sharing this is to help others who may be in this situation have realistic expectations for their trip, and to provide information about things they may not consider.

Planning and Funding

120 Days:

When my sister declined palliative/life-extending chemo in June of 2018 we began talking about what she wanted to do with her remaining time. At the top of her list was taking her kids to WDW. We began our process by applying for a wish trip with the “Dream Foundation.” Unfortunately we were told about 4 weeks later that they wouldn’t work with my sister’s hospice provider.

90 Days:

We then began the process of crowdfunding my sister’s trip. I have a background in non-profit fundraising, so this part for me was pretty easy to do. We already had a Facebook page for my sister’s cancer treatment journey, and my sister-in-law volunteered her services to create a private webpage. We set up a paypal account and included instructions for people to donate fee-free. We also had a Hilton Honors account, which allows people to “pool” points. We also asked people to donate airline miles (we chose southwest, since LS already had enough points for one round trip ticket). Our great aunt and uncle had time-share points available and donated a 5 night stay at Wyndham Bonnet Creek. We also utilized LS’s “Military Salute” discount for WDW park tickets for her, OS and nieces and nephew. DF, DSM and I paid our own way for airfare and park tickets.

60 Days:

Within 4 weeks we had enough hotel points/timeshare days for our entire trip, points for flights and money for park tickets. It was also around this time that I was put in contact with the Jack & Jill Foundation. They were able to provide us with free UO tickets for 6 as well as 25% off WDW tickets for the three of us not covered by the Military Salute discount.

OS was mostly home-bound by this point. I gave her 48 hours to research what she wanted to do and get back to me.

Her WDW Bucket List:
1. Meet Cinderella
2. Eat at as Sci-Fi Dine-in Theater
3. Eat a Kitchen Sink Sunday
4. Go in to BOG
5. Eat a Dole-Whip
6. Meet Goofy (for MN)

I also asked the kids to research and give me their top rides for the trip (OS was already too ill to really be comfortable on most rides, we did get her on one — more on that later). Of course I knew FOP should be a priority, I didn’t hold out too much hope for SDD, and of course we were not able to ride it.

<60 Days:

I worked my butt off to get ADR’s immediately and FP+ as soon as our window opened. Some of our FP+ were kind of wacky (one for one person at 12:55, one for two at 1:15, another one for two at 1:35, etc.), but I was able to get them — even FOP! The only ones we didn’t get that we wanted were SDD and 7DMT. The night before we left I was able to snag a breakfast ADR at BOG for our first morning at MK!

During this time we also were given around $1500 in cash and Disney gift card donations to be used for meals for OS and her kids. A parent of one of HN’s friends messaged me for our resort name and dates because she was paying for OS’s scooter rental for the whole trip! Others sent gifts (park bags, ponchos, water bottles, etc.) for OS and her kids.

That’s all I have time for for now! I’ll try to add more in the next few days!

Day 1: Travel Day

The day before, my sister’s ex dropped her and her kids at my place. We finished last minute packing and the next day my husband drove us to the airport. We had arranged for disability services and there was a bit of a hiccup getting a wheelchair to escort her. I knew then I should have gone with my gut and brought her wheelchair. D’oh! We finally got it and were on our way.

We checked her medical equipment. Easy peasy!

The flight was uneventful, though she was obviously in pain by the time we arrived. I sent the kids (well, teens) ahead to find our luggage while I helped OS use the restroom and take pain meds. I called for our rental car shuttle and we waited. Fortunately, there was a bench near the stop and we got on our way. LS was flying in from a different state and met us at the car rental place. We got the rental van about 7 pm, and by then we were hungry!

Headed to DS and parked to go to D’luxe Burger. OS was hurting and I so wished we had brought her wheelchair! Dinner was good, and we headed to our resort.

LS and I left OS and kids in the car went to check in. Bell services cruised OS’s scooter up to our room, showed us how to charge it and how to disassemble it to put in our rental van.

We loaded back up and went to Walmart for room/bag snacks and a few odds and ends we’d forgotten. By the time we got done there it was 11 PM and we were exhausted!

We headed back to our resort and rested up for our big first day at Magic Kingdom!

I’ll be back to tell you all about it soon!

Day 2: Magic Kingdom, Kitchen Sink Sundae and Hollywood Studios!

We started our day with an 8:30 AM reservation at BOG! We split 3 breakfasts, and between that and the grey stuff (it’s delicious!) it was plenty to fill us up. It wasn’t even lunch time and we had already checked one thing off OS’s Disney bucket list!

LS, the kids and I caught our 9:30 Haunted Mansion FP+ while OS rested in the shade.

After the ride OS was ready to head back to the resort and rest. I gave LS and the kids a quick tutorial on the MDE app and how to use it to find their way around the parks and strict instructions to leave at 1:20 PM and get on the bus for our 2:20 Beaches & Cream reservation.

They were of course 20 minutes late, but we got to our table and finally ordered our Kitchen Sink Sundae!

After dessert CN had an assignment to finish so they opted to head back to the resort with OS. LS, the rest of the kids and I headed to HS!

We got there just in time to see the March of the First Order, then we were off!

OS and CN met up with us at HS for our 8:30 PM ADR at Sci-fi Dine-in Theater.

OS had the burger, but lamented that it wasn’t as good as the one from the night before at D’luxe Burger.

By the time we were done the park was closed and we headed back to the resort to rest up for another day of fun!

Day 3: EPCOT Cinderella’s Happily Ever After and some Pixie Dust!

OS wasn’t up for going to the parks this morning, but told us she would be fine on her own, so the rest of us headed to EPCOT.

We had FP+ for Spaceship Earth, Soarin’ and Mission: Space. After that MN was on a mission to meet *every* princess, so we spent several hours doing that while LS and the other kids ran off to do their own thing.

We left EPCOT to get OS and head to our 5:10 ADR at 1900 Park Fare to fulfill her dream of meeting Cinderella.

*****

As I got up to get my food I saw the character handler standing off to the side. I approached him and told him of OS’s diagnosis and asked if she could get a photo with both Prince Charming and Cinderella. He said he would see what he could do.

When the characters came around, sure enough both came together and took a photo with her. OS was elated and I teared up and quietly thanked him. Little did we know the handler had more plans up his sleeve.

After we had finished eating and were getting ready to leave he came to our table and said, “the royal family requests your presence in the courtyard.” We were led to an enclosed back garden area where we had a private meet and greet with the entire character cast for about 15 minutes. He also had Memory Maker photographers on hand that took photos of us with them.

We all hugged and they told us that we were part of the royal family now. I started crying and the stepmother admonished me that “we don’t cry at family parties.” As we were leaving LS looked at me with tears in her eyes and said, “I guess this really is where dreams come true.”

I felt really badly that I failed to get the character handler’s name, but I made sure to email the park to let them know how amazing it was that the whole cast had gone above and beyond to create such an amazing experience for OS and her kids.

Unfortunately OS took a turn for the worse that night. The CM’s at the GF were great when we needed help. She was unable to maneuver her scooter to the car, so they took her in a golf cart to our rental van while I maneuvered her scooter that way.

Fortunately her hospice provider had arranged to have her transferred to a local provider during our trip and we were able to get a nurse to our resort to care for her.

LS took the kids to MK to catch a few more rides and see the fireworks.

Thank you for sharing this —

I’m glad to do it! It was an amazing experience and I wished I’d had some reference for what to expect when we were planning our trip. It was hard to find info, and I’d like to help others planning a similar trip.

This brought tears to my eyes. People can be so kind and thoughtful. What a fantastic photo!

Day 4: Animal Kingdom and more Pixie Dust!

OS had a rough night, so I stayed back with her that morning for her follow-up with the hospice nurse and CN slept in.

LS, HN, DN, and MN took an Uber to AK and rode Kali River Rapids.

Around 11:30 am the nurse was gone and OS wanted to rest. DF and DSM were due to arrive at the resort around 1:30 PM, so CN and I headed to AK to meet up with the others and catch our 12:25 Na’vi River Journey FP+. I was pretty bummed because this was the one ride I was sure wouldn’t be too uncomfortable for OS, but the kids enjoyed it.

Just as we were exiting the ride, DF called to tell us that they were at the resort with OS and she was ready to come to the park. Dang it! She had just missed it!

The crew and I decided to catch our 1:30 Kilimanjaro Safari FP+, then MN and I rushed to guest services where we met this friendly, helpful CM:

We told him of OS’s diagnosis, her situation that caused her to miss our FP+ and that Na’vi River Journey was likely the only ride she would be comfortable on the whole trip. He gave us an extra FP for all 9 of us to ride it anytime that day!

OS was worried about transferring from her scooter into the ride, but the CM at the front assured her that she would only have to walk about 8 feet to the boat and back. Reassured, we finally got her on a ride!

After that, everyone got to ride FOP twice as we were able to get a same-day FP and ride standby with a 45 min wait (since I’d had FP+ scheduled for the following evening I was able to cancel it and get something different for earlier the next day). We stayed until park closing and watched the show at the tree of life.

We had a great day at AK, and it was time to head home and rest up for day 5 of our trip!

What an awesome trip so far and glad you had such a magical experience with Cindy and her crew at the GF..........God bless
