VERO BEACH - -Firefighters contained, then extinguished, a large brush fire that threatened to scorch about 10 homes.

The fire, which stared at 11:05 a.m. and extended from 58th Court to 66th Avenue near 37th Street, was doused at about 2:40 p.m., said Indian River Fire Department Lt. Brian Williamson.

The fire came to within 30 feet of homes in The Sanctuary subdivision, but residents were not forced to evacuate, Williamson said. No one was injured in the blaze and no roads were closed, he added.

Firefighters dug fire lines around the blaze to prevent it from spreading, then soaked it with water from eight fire trucks and a Florida Department of Forestry helicopter.

Some fire crews remained this afternoon to stomp out smoldering embers but "all the active burning is out,'' Williamson said.

The fire was about three miles west of U.S. 1 and 17 blocks north of State Route 60.

Its cause was unknown.
