The purpose of this Assignment is to get out and have fun using our cameras, maybe learning a few things along the way, so pictures should be new as often as possible (though if you have a relatively new picture that fits a category, you can use it). All cameras and skill levels are welcome.

This could be one that we run for the year. No prizes can be rewarded other than recognition for a job well done!

Where possible, please use pictures taken from 15 April 2014 as the intent of this assignment is to get out and about. However, given that this is running from the start of 2014, if you do have a recent (2013’ish) picture already on file, by all means post it – especially if you would like to share your best pictures taken during 2013!
If you post a picture, please share what you did to take the picture irrespective of whether you shoot with a point and shoot or a dSLR or phone camera. For those with a dSLR, please include your ISO, aperture and shutter speed; as well as a brief description of anything that might help others learn from your experience.

It's Flower and Garden time at Epcot!
Topiaries, bursts of colour, textures and sunlight. What's not to love from a photography perspective?

This assignment is all about Flowers and Gardens.
And it doesn't have to be limited to the WDW Flower and Garden festival. Check out anything growing in your garden or head to a local park. Afterall, isn't it spring in the Northern Hemisphere?

Please share your shots!

It's not just Epcot that holds a Flower and Garden show. The Melbourne International Flower and Garden show is an annual event held in March. It’s rated as one of the top 5 Flower and Garden shows in the world:
  • Philadelphia, USA
  • Chelsea, England
  • Keukenhof, Holland
  • Melbourne, Australia
  • Cape Town, South Africa

It’s just an excuse for me to get out and about with the camera.

I know these are not a Flower and Garden Topiary but it's the closest I'm getting in Melbourne!

Snowed today, so that might slow down the spring flowers..

But here is a shot from this week...

untitled-102.jpg by Havoc315, on Flickr

It was taken with the A99 and a bounced flash. Though I generally do most of my shooting in RAW, I believe I actually just shot this with the camera's vivid jpeg.

From last April.... (hmmm, hopefully it means they are coming soon this year too)... a macro shot from the A55 and Minolta 50/2.8 macro lens:

And 1 more true Macro from last May..

Great pictures everyone.

Love the cherry blossoms, Dave. Washington really looks lovely in spring.

While these were not taken after 15 April they were taken within 10 days and 2 days of that date. We took a trip to D.C. to see the cherry blossoms and it was too early this year, not a one was out but when we got home our tree was blooming.

The second photo is from the NC Arboretum at Asheville, 13 April.

I'm a flower nut especially coneflowers. These are from my yard but from last summer cause we are still in freeze mode in NEPA. Last night we got an inch of snow and I lost all my blooms on my magnolia even. Tonight we are hitting record lows. . . so i got nothing right now. . . so I'll cheat and post from last year!

Beautiful shots everyone, I'll join as soon as all the snow melts and it warms up too.

No blooms here yet either so here are some shots I took during our late March 2014 Flower & Garden trip:

For some of the topiary shots I decided to get up close for a little different perspective. I also decided to apply a softer treatment during post processing.

great pics. We leave on sat for the show. How was it shooting during the day down there for the topiaries? Were u using any filters? Ur post processing is really nice. GreAt pop to the colors without over saturating the green.

Thanks Jim! You should have a great time shooting the F&G Festival. There should be more flowers in bloom and the greens should be brighter. I didn't have any filters on the lenses. I just used a softening filter during post - I think it was the "Glamour Glow" filter from the Nik collection.

I do have a recent (August 2013) set that fits perfectly with the Flower & Garden theme.

These were from our trip to France and were taken at the garden of Claude Monet's estate in Giverny. You can see where he got the inspiration for many of his impressionist works. The lily pond and the Japanese bridge were particularly beautiful.

These were taken with a Nikon D7000 and a Sigma 17-70 f/2.8 - 4.0 lens. I'm not really a "flower" man so if anyone can help identify the flowers it would be appreciated.

thanks for that. I'll have to remember that. I use their suite also.

OMG! Visiting this garden is very close to the top of my bucket list right now. We had a Monet exhibition in Melbourne last year and the artwork of the Giverny gardens were just stunning! Thanks for sharing these pictures. The lily pond pictures are beautiful! Did you see the house?
