Wheelchair cushion recommendations?

I ended up in sitting in my chair yesterday for several hours. I realize that I am going to need more cushioning to make it through a day at Disney. My rear got tired.

Does anyone have any helpful hints here about what kind of a cushion might help? My chair has about a 2" cushion and is okay for shorter periods of time. But I know that at Disney I will be in it pretty much all day.

Thanks!

My daughter swears by this cushion. She had surgery for a major Labral Hip Tear along with bone involvement etc and when she was finally able to sit up, she was still in so much pain. A friend got her one of these because it worked for them. It was wonderful and she took it every single place she went and sat. Maybe it could be used on a wheelchair also.

EGG SITTER SUPPORT CUSHION from Amazon.

I am also looking for a cushion to fit in my removable seat cover can hold up to 18” W x 17” D x 3” Thick. It is thick foam, but I am looking for future suggestions.

The Double in the link I provided, and the Royal, are both 18×16. The Royal is 2" thick, I think the Double is 3".

If you search Amazon for wheelchair gel cushion, they have quite a few that are 18x16x3 - so almost wjat you seek. Otherwise I would say try a local medical supply place.

If a 2” cushion isn’t giving you what you need, I’m going to be that guy and recommend speaking with a professional. Either a seating specialist if you have access to one, or a PT / medical supply rep. The right cushion is important if you are in your chair more then before. Not something to be guessing at if you can help it.

Thanks for all the replies. I will be back in New Orleans where my PT is and my power chair dealer are, so I think I'll check with them when I get back.

We have a few of these. DH's grandmother has one for her wheel chair, DMIL uses one when we travel on her EVC, and DH and I use them on the office chairs. Love them.

My daughter used RoHo pads on her WC. She was confined to a WC 4-5X after surgeries (no weight bearing allowed at all).

I’ll say which cushion I use as an example of why you want to find the cushion that works best for you. I use a Zoid air filled cushion. Because I have spastic cerebral palsy there are a couple things that I need in a cushion. My legs pull back tightly against my cushion so I need something with a rounded front edge. A sharp box edge would cut into the back of my knees. I also pull my legs up under me when sitting in my chair. Because I shift in my seat a lot, the top mesh layer of the Zoid is helpful. It protects the body of the cushion from friction damage. A standard foam or gel cushion I would rip too quickly. Other people would have different factors that may be more important for them

Thanks, Staren and everyone for the suggestions. I, too, will wait and consult PT.

The one I have now was made for the wheelchair. I can't tell the strength of the foam inside.

It fits into a zippered waterproof cover with a mesh layer on top and front that is washable.

On the bottom is four sewn-in velcro strips that attach to matching velcro strips sewn-in thick nylon straps that are attached to the wheelchair.

I think that I know why I was uncomfortable one time. When I rented one for the first time, I was curious and removed things to see how everything worked to allow it to fold and unfold without removing anything.

I think that I replaced the cushion to close to the front allowing the left rear metal part of the seat to be felt when I repositioned myself.

I have a Varilite air cushion for my rigid wheelchair that I really like, I did have a seating evaluation to get the right cushion and that was very helpful, so I would for sure talk to your therapist and medical supply rep to see what they think you need, but I’m very happy with my Varilite so if you are interested i’ll link their website so yo can see the seating systems they offer.

I have a 20”x18” Comfort Company Curve cushion (Picture below) from Spinlife for my Fold and Go. Even though it’s a foam cushion, when you sit on it FEELS LIKE SITTING ON A CLOUD! I would recommend going for the Comfort-Tek cover because it’s a leathery-style vs. the Stretch-air, which is more of a cloth material.

The cushion also has a hump in the middle of the cushion that helps with leg positioning and adds to the comfort.267414E6-6EBD-466B-8984-3E49ACA18E7E.jpeg
