When will you consider resuming Canadian travel ?

Or travel to places other than the USA ?
Would you consider visiting another province ( assuming they are allowing people from where you live ) ?
Would you consider a European country with their Covid cases under control ?
What about flying within Canada or elsewhere ?
I’m not sure how I feel. A few months or even weeks ago I would have said no way. But if our numbers stayed stable and manageable I would consider another province with stable manageable numbers. And I would consider air travel within Canada if I was satisfied with the safety precautions. Europe .. I haven’t really begun to consider that one yet.
I was just wondering what others thought. I intend for this thread to be friendly and respectful.. so let’s keep it that way.:)

We have traveled to another province ( Saskatchewan ) earlier this summer for our niece's graduation. We did get tested before we went, as Alberta has testing for everyone, even with no symptoms. We pulled our holiday trailer to our bil's home and stayed in there. We only went into 2 Tim's to get some coffee and treats for the road, and we wore masks into each one we went into. We didn't go into any businesses when we were there. We visited with family, were blessed with beautiful weather so we could be outside and did not have to go into the garage or shop to visit and mingle with the family. It was a great getaway. We even got to see and spend a couple hours outside with dh's 90 yr old Grandma. She is still living on her own in her own home with some other family members who help to take care of her. She got to see her first great great grandchild.

We tried to be as responsible with our travelling as we could. We did all social distancing outside when seeing other family members ( as they of course are not in our small social bubble we keep ) and made sure to have all supplies, food and gifts so we didn't need to enter any businesses. We only went into gas stations to pick up snacks, gas and use the bathroom. We didn't want to " be that person " who had brought the virus to someone in another province from a province with a higher virus number. We tried to be as careful as we could to " not be that person"

We would love to maybe do a little getaway to BC. I'm not sure how I feel about flying long distances ( going east ) but I think we would maybe consider a short flight into the lower mainland for a little weekend getaway. As long as I can take along some wipes to wipe everything down in the plane...and if all passengers are wearing masks in the plane, we might consider doing that. Airlines will need to lower their prices for us to be able to afford to go east ( Ontario ) for any type of holiday - unless I can find a good sale or use airmiles. It is on our bucket list, but then things also need to be open for us to come there and make it worth our time to visit there.

I stumbled across this website a couple of weeks ago and i think it might help with this topic!!
It's Time to Travel

It's full of all kinds of links to various airlines & airports, hotel chains, train travel, car rentals, individual tourism boards & chambers from various cities. There's also a really handy interactive map of where we can travel to right now and what restrictions are in place within Canada.
[/B]
For example if i say i want to travel from Ontario to Newfoundland & Labrador this pops up. If i click on the link to learn more i land on their provincial COVID page so i can read all about their info.

There's also a list of all of the international areas we can travel to and what restrictions are being imposed. Here's Iceland for an example (cause isn't that a place we'd want to go for a holiday?!?!)

Probably not until we are vaccinated. I’m not even going to grocery stores or for a cup of coffee right now, so don’t know how I can realistically say we’d travel any further than our yard. That pains me to say, as we love travel, but the risks outweigh the rewards right now.

I am in the "Atlantic bubble" and I am still not doing anything more than day trips to outdoor activities. I think travelling to other provinces won't feel comfortable to me for a long time. I would like to visit with family in Alberta but not enough to get on a plane or risk the exposure. My mom and I have a trip to England planned for May 2021 - I'm starting to research for 2022 in case we need to push it back :(

Keep the border closed till at least mid 2021 and a vaccine is available. I live on the USA right near the border.

The most we are doing this year is camping within our province (Manitoba). The case numbers have started rising again here and the majority of them are due to travel. Maybe next year we will drive to Alberta to visit family there if things don't get worse. If it is similar to this summer, we will just stay put and camp. The risk isn't worth it.
My needtotravelitis is really starting to itch, so this is really bugging me! Actually I think it's the planning I enjoy most, and with so much uncertainty we can't really even do that.

I am hoping that some local places step up Fall /Christmas / Winter outdoor activities / festivals.
I've already emailed my fav Christmas store to make sure Santa will be there this year,,YES!!!
https://www.retrofestive.ca/I'll be sticking close to home,,I may get cabin Fever in the Spring if the Winter is a bad one,,,,,,, then look for me on the Casino Niagara Outdoor deck sitting at the slot machines with a stiff drink and mask.
Yes there are slot machines on the open air deck.

Hugs
Mel

1. Yes, on a case by case basis. We (live in NB) would travel to Nova Scotia or PEI, no problem. That said - "travel" would mean staying in a self-contained unit (cabin, cottage, home etc...), and our activities would all be in outdoor spaces where we are able to safely distance ourselves from others. We just got back from an overnight trip within our province, and felt very safe. However, would we travel farther, or to provinces that had/still have a lot higher case counts? No.

2. No. But we wouldn't have been going even before Covid anyways, lol.

3. Not flying anywhere right now.

No travel plans here. Well none that I'm not in the process of cancelling any way! Even the 2022 cruise I have booked is iffy at this point. Ugh. I would love to go some place, even Toronto or the East coast, my son is fascinated by ocean things, and tide pools, but obviously it's not an option yet. Maybe March Break 2021? Maybe next summer. Or maybe the one after. He's also into "war stuff" and wants to go to France to see things there, but that will wait even longer I suspect, maybe when he's 13? so 2023?

I agree, the need to plan something ..anything .. is really starting to itch for me. But I would want to do so relatively safely and respectful of the rules and guidelines.

I think what brought up this topic for me today was the idea that we are in this for several years as mentioned by Dr Tam. It got me wondering how people felt about leisure travel in general. The travel industry in Canada can’t sustain a 2-3 year hiatus, it needs visitors to be viable. So it got me thinking about travel within our borders and if the time was right yet.

I would go camping or even to a hotel right now. I would clean the hotel room before using anything. 😬. I’d even do a road trip to another province.

I will not fly as I just saw an interview done by an epidemiologist on transmission of disease and he said no way would he fly right now. He said the seats behind you expose you if they sneeze or cough as does the person in the seat beside you.

Cruising has been halted by CLIA until Oct 31 due to surge in worldwide cases as well as recent cruises like Uncruise, Hurtigruten and Paul Gauguin all having positive cases. Much as I love my Disney cruises, I have no desire to be on one anytime soon.

Better to be safe than sorry.

My sister and family flew from SK to ON to visit almost 2 weeks ago (they leave Friday). There were only 34 people on the plane - no one in the rows behind or in front of them, they had all the seats across the row they were in (4 people, 6 seats). Everyone one on the plane other than my nephew (2, autistic) wore a mask. They were the only plane leaving Regina that morning and the only plane landing at Pearson at the time they came in. My sister declares that all travel she does in the future will be during a pandemic. :)

I would normally have pushed for them not to come, but they missed last year and my dad has dementia. This might be the last time they see him fairly close to normal (it runs in the family and is quite fast progressing). We made the decision to have them come out this year because of that.

As for myself - I won't be travelling anywhere out of province (ON) any time soon. Now, much of that is that we rarely travel. US travel will be out indefinitely - at least until COVID is under control and the current administration isn't in power. Europe - I'm hoping that 2022 is okay, because that's when my middle boy and I want to go, but we will put it off if necessary.

This is exactly what my husband says (both of them). So probably 2-5 years (considering we only travel state side in the summers)

I would travel to some of Europe anytime now, I have family there and things are pretty much back to normal. Their kids went back to school in May. My cousin’s kids have played in regular summer hockey tournaments in July, gone to hockey camps etc - no masks or physical distancing. They’ve been posting pics from their travels and you’d never know this was right now. It’s so confusing how one country is handling it versus another and they haven’t had a big spike. Yes cases are still there, but nothing is spiking like second wave.
My brother is travelling there from Canada in 2 weeks, he knows he may have to quarantine after.
So I would travel to certain European countries for sure.
I would consider Caribbean where we can go, or Mexico this winter.
We have a cruise in February from Florida and I think it’s like 50/50 at best it will happen. If things improve in the states by October we will definitely consider going in February. However the rest of 2020 I don’t want to go there.

I like to travel, as do most people on here. There is no way I'm going anywhere this year, I haven't even gone downtown. Next year if things are looking stable I might consider travel inside Canada. If there is a vaccine, I might even take a plane.

Bigger travel will be fall of 2022 at the earliest most probably it will be spring 2023.

We're travelling within BC this summer; went to Penticton (the Okanagan) last month and later this month we are headed to the Kootenays. No plans to leave BC this year and to be honest (this will sound terrible I know) we have no desire to travel across Canada unless we can get into the Maritimes which is somewhere I've always wanted to go. We've done ON, we've done Quebec, I want to go way further East! We were originally planning on going up to the Yukon later this month since BC residents can enter without quarantining but it's too pricey
Thanks to cancellations/rebooks etc we now have 3 cruises booked for 2021, but I'm not very optimistic at ALL about the March 2021 cruise. August 2021 is Europe so we shall see.....then we've got Bahamas November 2021. That's the only one I'm really confident about at this time. Time to start planning for 2022 me thinks...... :rolleyes1

Have already flown within Canada to visit family, about a month ago. Actually I sent my 11 yo ahead as an unaccompanied minor, and followed a couple of weeks later with my daughter.

I would travel basically anywhere (yes, even the US) if I thought I could have a relatively normal experience while there, had a contingency plan in case someone got sick (with COVID or otherwise) and couldn't fly, and had time to quarantine when we return.

We will probably go somewhere outside of the country for March Break, but will not make solid plans until much closer to the time.

ETA: Flying right now is actually quite a civilized experience, if you can get past the masks and virtually no in-flight service. Flights are on-time, or more often early. Planes are half-empty, and probably cleaner than you've ever seen them before. My outbound flight had 16 passengers; 13 on the return. On and off the plane in minutes, plenty of space for carry-on luggage, no wait at security, checked luggage unloaded and on the carousel by the time you get there. Although I hear that some routes are quite busy now, particularly Toronto-Vancouver, so YMMV.

I highly recommend visiting the Maritimes! It really is a beautiful place with a lot of neat things to see!
