DOES ANYONE KNOW IF OUR JULY DIS'ERS AT THE PARK CURRENTLY ARE OKAY?

The monorail crash has me worried! My heart is of course breaking for the CM who passeds family, and I'm sending prayers their way.:sad1:

But I also heard 8 were injured and my first thought was concern they may include some of our current July Dis'ers!! (not that I want ANYONE to be hurt).

I'm really hoping those who are at the park now will check in ASAP to let us know how they are.

OH no! Of course, the July board is the first place I check when I get on, going to find out more info... How awful!:sad1:

LAKE BUENA VISTA -- News 13 has learned a driver of the Walt Disney World Monorail System was killed when two monorail trains collided early Sunday.

Witnesses who called the News 13 newsroom said the trains collided on the Epcot track at the Transportation and Ticket Center around 2 a.m. Sunday as guests were leaving the park following a Fourth of July fireworks show.

The Reedy Creek Fire Department told News 13 the driver was pronounced dead on the the scene, and another driver was taken to the hospital.

No guests were injured, fire officials said.
There was no immediate word on what caused the wreck, or how many people were aboard the trains when they collided.

According to witnesses, one monorail train slammed into the back of the other.

Crews had to cut the driver who died out of the train.

Sunday’s wreck marks the first fatal accident in the Walt Disney World Monorail System’s nearly 38 years of operation.

Statement from Disney
Mike Griffin, vice president of public affairs at Walt Disney World, issued the following statement Sunday following the wreck:

“Today, we mourn the loss of our fellow cast member. Our hearts go out to his family and those who have lost a friend and coworker. The safety of our guests and cast members is always our top priority. The monorail is out of service and we will continue to work closely with law enforcement to determine what happened and the appropriate next steps.”

Disney officials told News 13 Epcot is scheduled to reopen on time at 9 a.m., but the monorail to the park will remain out of service until further notice

Wow. I have been looking, but didn't see anything about guests. So this was the monorail from Epcot? I didn't realize they had fireworks there on the 4th? Guess it was one of those, doesn't effect me, don't have to internalize it things.... Maybe FlyingPegasus will give us some info later...

I have never heard of anything like it? I wonder if the driver had a heart attack, or went to sleep..... The poor family. I will have to work really hard to keep my girls from hearing about this, Anna Kathryn won't dare get on it next week if she does.

Totally OT, but I thought of you last night as we were watching the fireworks - 1 week from then, we'll be on our Wishes Cruise!:cool1::banana: I finally used the self timer on the camera to take a picture of us all, I'll try to get it up today.

The Monorail may not be running. I am guessing that it will be down at least serveral weeks will they investigate this accident. I can't wait till our Wishes Cruise. I haven't told the kids really want it to be a surprise! Lois

I haven't said anything yet either! I did tell DH that you, Janet, and the kids had plans to watch Wishes from the Poly beach and we were going to try to meet while we were there.. I thought that might help explain looking for you and being adamant that we go.

just saw the pictures of the monorail. Scary. So sad for the cast member and his family:sad1:

Maybe Pegasus will enlighten us more alter on since she is right there.

Barbie princess:

How sweet of your sister. What an awesome surprise. 4 more days - How exciting!!!!!:yay:

P.S. sorry about that whole colony thing:rotfl2:

No word on it, yet.

I'm really hoping it runs.

It's the reason why we are going to the CR.

I'd also be very upset.

It figures, as it is probably the only time in my life I'll ever get to stay at a monorail resort :sad2:

I am, however, much more sorry to the family and friends of the driver.

I have heard that the busses at the Grand Floridian stink, so now I am wondering if my next step should be to rent a car. Any thoughts?

It sounds like the monorail up at MK is still running. Maybe it is just he monorail from the TTC to Epcot that is not running. I would not rent a car - I am sure they will add extra busses from the TTC or resorts to Epcot. I would also think they would get it back in operation asap.

I just heard that a monorail at Disney crashed last night and the driver was killed. The monorails have now been shut down until further notice. Buses only. OMG.. I feel really bad for the driver and his/her family. I also am distressed that the buses now will be REALLY crowded. :scared:

They said this is the first time a monorail has EVER crashed! What is going on?? The DC metro crashed last week and people were killed. These trains just never crash!! At least not til the world went crazy!!

I guess they will have to put busses to Epcot at CR, GF and Poly because, from what I understand, they don't have any.

It is what it is. It's still Disney.

That is horrible about the monorail.....:( My heart goes out to his family....

On a happier note.....I can now do the single digit dance!

My guess (& it is just a guess) is that none of the trains will be running until the determine what caused this accident, as they all run on the same system. If it was human error they will be back sooner but if it was a error within the system or in the train itself it may take months. I am sure that Disney is doing what ever it needs to to get people safely to the parks from the resorts that the monorails served.

We all may need to remember that it is for our safety and be happy that we were not on the train last night.
