Team 'Ohana 2009: No One Left Behind

My thoughts on the captaincy - I don't really care if we have a captain or not. I think we should try the informal structure with those of us that can stepping up for things that interest us.

I think one good thing about this can/will be is the we should all feel equally empowered to lead the team into discussions that we would like to have, which I don't really see as much of a real change from the way things are, but I do think is a good base for the team framework.

and Corinna, good job on showing the wisdom of not running at the right time. As runners, we tend to be people who want to do things, and to decide to not do something can be tough, regardless of the outside cause.

All the other scifi fans - I was a little disturbed by the plot line of Caprica, although I suppose there are some places the events have to lead to be part of the Battlestar Galactica timeline. I'll consider giving it more time to gel, though, especially since I am still a bit bummed about what the BBC did to Torchwood and now Doctor Who.

Debra - Go ahead and list me for the Run Wild Half Marathon (where better to wear my most wild shorts!!) in Houston on 02/21. I am pretty certain I'll do this one, unless I make a late change decision to run the Austin Full on the 14th.

Ok, since it looks like my Buzz team will be no more, I was wondering if I could be a cousin too? :flower3:

I promise to workout and be a supportive team member, and might interject some humor along the way, if you will have me.

I have enjoyed my time on the Buzzies, but I guess I am being forced to broaden my horizons, plus I would like to get to know more WISHers. :goodvibes

Allie - I think you will shortly find yourself welcomed with open arms. We have the core of a very good group here and another active member can only help out the family even more, Team Ohana specializes is being supportive, and we love a good sense of humor. Now if only you are a fan of sci-fi as well.....:happytv: (although the latter is not a requirement!).

Allie, I think I actually joined a team after you mentioned joining one on the old, old C25K Thread - your team was full, and I got placed here, so I for one would be thrilled to have you on this team!

Here is a question for the team, though: I noticed that Maura on the Teams 2010 thread is now the Teams Coordinator and is looking for information from us including who our captain is and how many members there will be, and she will be assigning new members as well. Does this mean we are not supposed to collect our own cousins on the way? Seems disinclusive to say "Glad to meet you - go ask Maura if you can join us" you know? Do we even want to go with the team structure or do we want "go rogue," and be more loosely organized and welcome people who approach us?

Debra are you still interested in maintaing the team roster and being the contact person for Maura or are those things you'd like to hand off?

Monday Mixer- Richard and I have been working on plans to revive it - we had said today, but I had a busy weekend in the Underworld (running crew for Eurydice) and didn't get a chance to write up the intro or promote it to other teams. I am leaning toward promoting it this week on threads and then doing the actual thread next week. I am home today with a sick boy (fine as long as he has meds, but definitely had a fever and nasty cough at 4am) and could make it happen still today in theory. Everyone should feel free to throw out a mixer question at any point: we are keeping a list!

All right - enough business! I ran 7 on the TM on Saturday. I was so glad to be inside with dry feet and enjoyed my leisurely Saturday morning. They are so rare. The 7 miles were fine and I did feel like I could have done the half had conditions been more favorable. One of my friends who lives an hour away had registered and couldn't make it out of his small town, so he didn't race either. Today we have snow. And I have a sick 6 year old at home, so I'm not going to BodyPump as I usually would. I'll just enjoy one of the Gaiam workouts a little later.

Oh, and in other news, we think CASH had a kidney stone on Sunday morning. If anyone watches Modern Family, it was exactly like it happened to Phil on that show (except I didn't call the "hot firefighters," though I offered to. Perhaps inappropriately!).

Since the teams are going to be more social than competitive, I don't see why we can't let Maura know we have picked up some members on a direct route because the number of members won't necessarily have to balance out to be fair. However, I do think we should try to stay in the same general framework as the other teams, if only to avoid confusion by others on the Boards.

Debra - If you want, I'll volunteer to take over the roster maintentance and contact on team coordination. It is unlikely that I can be as active as you have been in the past, but I think I can be around enough to do that.

Corinna - I'm with you on whenever is good to get the mixer started, and how the heck is Hades these days?

Allie - Welcome! I came to Ohana last year after abandoning the Buzzies. :sad2: I just didn't feel at home there, but I LOVE my team. I think you'll be really happy here. I'm glad you're here now, 'cause you were one of the Buzzies I hated to leave!

Corinna - My feel for Maura's role was more for new WISH members who don't really know where to go for a team. Maybe that's not all it is, but I did what Allie did last year and came looking for Ohana rather than waiting to be assigned. I was pretty sure this was where I wanted to be after a pretty unhappy experience on my previous team. Sorry you have a sick kid - sounds like it's been a rough weekend all around! Even more reason you didn't need to run. And I'll scratch my head for Monday mixer questions.

Other Ohana business question - do we want to start a new thread for the new year? I could do that now, or we could wait until we get new members... :confused3

This sounds great to me! And I think you're right. It can be hard to tell sometimes how things are "supposed" to go. At least for me. I would much rather just adopt new cousins as they come to us and let Maura know. And if she sends us some, too, so much the better!

As for a new thread, I am all in favor of one for the new year. Richard do you want to start it so you can put the roster in the first post or would you rather someone else get the new thread rolling?

Good Afternoon, Cousins!

I'm pleased to report a generally good weekend, with 6M Saturday, 4M of incline walking Sunday, and 4M this AM. I feel like I'm getting back into my groove with working out and eating better. I also lost the vacation lb and one more, so I was quite pleased with last week.

And in a more social vent, speaking of tv, anyone watching 24? I took last season off, but I'm glad to be back with Keifer. My other Monday night tapings include Castle and Ghost Whisperer. I didn't watch GW as it appeared new, so now I catch 4 episodes on SyFy. I didn't expect to like it, but now I'm hooked. I also really like Castle. How can you go wrong with Nathan Fillion? popcorn::

I read U is for Undertow this weekend. I really liked it, and was glad I read it. I gave up on "T" in the first chapter because I couldn't handle the subject matter (elder abuse), but for some reason I was ok with this one -- equally awful topic, but I couldn't put the book down.

I'll be happy to join the new thread -- and I'll be there for the resurrection of the Monday Mixer! (You know I can't paste the link, so someone more savvy than I needs to start it :rolleyes1 ) Dennis is also happy to continue as a cousin -- he doesn't post, but if we need him for mileage or minutes, or a wry comment about our cult, he's available. ;)

:welcome: Allie! Always happy to welcome new cousins!

An update on my 2011 WDW plans -- I have decided to do the Half again next year, and then bump up to a Full in 2012. After receiving all kinds of great advice, I really think I need another year to get into better shape so I will enjoy the marathon experience, I suspect I'm only going to do one, so I want it to be something I'm looking forward to, rather than afraid of. Also, it does look like I *might* be able to do the DL Half this year, and I like the idea of doing the that Half then starting training for the WDW Half, without confusion (mostly in my mind) about what the heck I'm doing.

Corinna -- I am eager to do the Full in 2012! I will be finishing far behind you, but we will both be training for the same race! :woohoo: How is CASH? My goodness, you had quite the weekend. I hope this week is less stressful and more healthy for everyone. pixiedust: And good call not doing that Half, we need our Corinna fully-functional.

Richard -- I wondered what you guys would think of Caprica. I am looking forward to seeing it progress. I got it on Netflix, so I didn't have any blurred parts -- it made it a little edgier. It took me almost the first hour to really get into it, and even then...I'm going to give it a little more time, I think setting this up, particularly for people who didn't watch Battlestar, may have been the cause of some of the slowness.

Mel -- Wow, a tri! It's great to give yourself a new challenge, and I know you will enjoy getting ready for this one. :cheer2:

Debra -- Thank you for serving as our fearless leader! I know I speak for everyone when I say we really appreciate all the time and effort you put into Team Ohana this year! :grouphug:

Sending a big  to Julie, Jen, JenB, Butch, Jeanne, Kathy and Jackie!

Everyone have a fabulous week!

Maria :upsidedow

Hey, folks!

I've already passed along our roster to Maura, with Allie's name. I've also let Maura know we have no captain, but will let her know that Richard will be our contact person.

Maura also knows we're not doing the miles/minutes, as far as I know, and people can join us "at will." We'll welcome whoever comes our way. :goodvibes I do think that Maura might "assign" us a few new WISHers, though, just to give newbies some direction. Some new folks might feel strange about just joining in, so her role of coordinator will be valuable, I'm sure.

We do need a new thread! I agree with Corinna that the roster might be on the first post of the new thread. That way, it will be easier for people to find who's on the team by looking at the first post. I think Sandy321 also had a good idea about putting the WISH intro (from the monthly thread) on our first post as well. Richard, Jackie, no matter to me. I do think--in the spirit of our team ethos--I shouldn't be the one to start the thread or maintain the roster. Get rid of the old management, so to speak! :rotfl2:

Corinna: Good idea on posting to all of the threads with a "heads up" about the mixer, then waiting a week. That way, people will know it's coming. And I might have said this before, but one of the best things about a new thread for it is that you don't need to post a reminder to all the threads every week, telling them what the new prompt is and where to find it on the 'Ohana thread.

Speaking of the mixer, I'm sure the rest of us would like to know what you and Richard have cooked up. :goodvibes Somewhere on this flipping computer I have notes on left-over questions...

I do hope CASH, your DS, and your baby of a Eurydice production all get better soon! :rotfl: And super glad your had a good indoor 7 miles vs. a potentially miserable Frozen Half.

Allie: Welcome--you're gonna love us, I know! Just the way I love you. Folks, Allie tracked many of us on our marathon weekend events--I received lovely text messages from her, via Sandy, over the weekend!

Indeed, enough business. I've been a good little WISHer this weekend. Stayed steady on the running and workouts, fairly good on the nutrition, and dropped 2 pounds when I weighed in this Monday. We'll see what happens with my motivation come tomorrow, when I expect to run in snow flurries. :scared1:

On the race front, as usual...no schedule yet. I'm doing a little shuffling of work priorities, trying to figure out the budget. And, as usual, DOOD is up in the air, too. He's got a new contract to sign that was supposed to be ready last Tuesday....:confused3 Without the contract, we don't know his 1) pay or 2) administrative responsibilities during academic breaks. Oh, bother.

Ooops, Maria posted while I was writing my post!

Great Scott, Maria! You had an excellent weekend. And I'm so glad you have made a decision about the full/half that makes YOU happy. Of course, I'm selfishly happy that you'll be on the half course with me next year, but that's just an added bonus.

I haven't watched 24 in years, I'm afraid. I might need to give Castle a go, though, because I am--like you--a fan of Fillion!

About Caprica....I'd seen the movie, as well, months ago & forgot they were showing it as a preview. I'm all for the big serious, philosophical discussions they promise, truly I am. But what DOOD and I both wondered about--much too early in the series, we know--is if the tone will be, well, soooo serious. Not that BSG was a laugh a minute, but we're both ready for some action sequences and maybe some inappropriate humor. :upsidedow

As for a new thread, I am all in favor of one for the new year. Richard do you want to start it so you can put the roster in the first post or would you rather someone else get the new thread rolling?

Done and here.

Please give me a couple days to get the roster fully up to date--and please let me know if I have left any names off or should remove a name that is incorrect.

Got room on your team for one more? I've been PMing with Debra about teams and the ideas/philosophies behind them and figure that since she's really cool, her teammates must be too. :)

Can you tell the difference between a slitheen, a Klingon, a cylon and a go'auld? We have high standards here...

Just kidding! :rotfl2: Richard just started a new thread for us, the link is a couple of posts up. C'mon over! We're really cool in that nerdy, scifi way...we also have a bit of a literary bent, so feel free to share any great reads you come upon! We have a great range of events, 5Ks, Halfs, Fulls, even Tris, so you're sure to find a few cousins with similar goals. :thumbsup2

:welcome:

Awwww, shucks.... These folks are WAY cooler than I am. :thumbsup2

You, however, sir, do have a price for admission. Do tell us about your handle, FLFigawi. It's been driving me crazy. I feel like I should know what it means, but... :rotfl2:

Oh, and what Maria said. Just join the 2010 thread.

It'll be great to have a fellow team member around the corner from me and not across the country. now on to the 2010 thread!

Maria, there is no proof that you will finish far behind me in 2012 - impossible to predict where either of us will be by then!

Just had to say that before fully moving over to the new thread... :)
