If AG is better than WCT...WCT must really be bad!
The last couple of times we ate at AG the food and service were really bad.
I'm wondering if the picnic is the way to go for preferred viewing of WOC.
The food at my princess lunch at Ariel's was just a TINY bit better than the food at WCT, and the portions were bigger.
The service at WCT was somewhat better (as in they came by much more often, seemed more concerned about whether or not you actually liked it, etc.) but they were also noticably slower. Neither had fast service, but at WCT it was 10 minutes between when we finished our dessert to when we got our bill, and almost 15 more minutes after that before we actually got the bill back for my signature. (In fairness, I ate my dessert crazy quick and the others were also quick, and the waiter did have to run 3 gift cards as well as my credit card. But the service was also very slow when we ate there in 2009 so I'm figuring it's more the restaurant than our situation.)
Whereas they generally try their best to get you out of Ariel's in 90 minutes. (I read some reports of them trying to get you out of Ariel's MUCH faster than that for WoC though, which isn't helpful either!) If you like a leisurely meal, WCT might have the edge, but otherwise I'd say that the main advantage to WCT is the 4 PM start time (versus 5 PM for Ariel's).
I am wondering about the picnic too, is the seating with WCT really so much better that it is worth a lot more money?! I need to decide soon.
I have heard mixed reviews as to picnic viewing areas. Our viewing area was excellent for us, but some others are claiming that picnic FP-holders also get into the same area. If that's the case then the picnic is a complete and utter steal...but they sell so many picnic lunches, I have a hard time believing that's really true, or if it is, I don't think it will stay that way for too much longer.
When are you going? How many days will you have available to see the show? How big is your party? We did the reserved dining because picnics weren't announced at the time, and we are three adults with our own households ($40 plus tip for one person is a lot easier to budget for than, say, $200 for a family of 5 (ages 10+). We were also there opening night, which was expected to be a complete and utter madhouse (which I don't think panned out the way we'd imagined; I know a couple people arrived at 9:30 AM and got Blue FPs for the second show, so that's not so bad at all).
If you're going later in the summer while the Southern California APs are blocked, I think the picnic might be the best way to go. If you're going at a time that's expected to be ultra-crowded, and/or if you only have one day for sure to see the show, and/or if your party is small, then the dining package MIGHT be a good idea. Right now it seems like the most effective strategy is to do the picnic (or a standard FP if you want) and then get to your waiting area well before the time on your ticket, no matter what the ticket actually says.
