Need ideas for a swimsuit for 12 y.o. dd

This thread is timely. My 12 y.o. niece showed us her bikini this weekend and my MIL flipped out because it was so age-inappropriate for her (extremely busty child). MIL is looking to take her to get a more modest suit and I was suggesting many of these same stores. We are going on a family cruise together soon. My SIL got mad and said that there are ONLY skimpy suits available. I agree it's harder to find some coverage, but it's very possible. I have two teenage DD's myself so I have walked that minefield many times.

I had to find a one piece for DD 17 for a summer program at Notre Dame (it was required). I didn't think a Junior size one piece existed, but I found a cute modest one at Penney's.

DD wore her suit from last year to a swimming birthday party this year and OMG!!!! What looked cute last year looks extremely suggestive this year.

That said, my DD is not EXTREMELY busty, but she is definitely well developed for her age. PacSun was a good fit for her so don't completely rule it out.

Right, it's not always the suit design that's the problem. It's how it fits the particular girl that makes it seem inappropriate, with too much cleavage showing. My DD's are small to average in that area, but we all still prefer some coverage for peace of mind! Thank goodness we are on the same page. A big problem with DN is that she likes her cleavage showing:scared1: Not a great thing for someone who's 12.

My daughter also has this issue and we found hers at Penneys this year. Last year she got one from Sears, the brand was called Zero Exposure, I believe, and I really liked how that one fit, but she did not like the colors of it. Not only does she want the Tankini, but also a straight across top, and not the kind where you can see the cleavage. I guess I am glad she is so modest, but it was hard to find something.

This year is a big issue she is turning 16 and well lets say we are in double alphabet for her top and I can't find anything. I also don't want to spend $$$ on a bathing suit for her. Sigh...

We tried some Lands End and they were too small for her bust :confused3.

ANy advice for me?? LOL... must be 1 piece or tankinis only! and no skimpy bottoms... I dont want too much do i?? :lmao:

Try women's sizes at Kohls - they have more coverage than juniors, but they still have cute tankinis that you can buy as separates (including "boy short" bottoms).

We will head out to Khols this weekend. The are some cute ones on the website. Do they ususally have good stock in the store? Last year I was wincing when she wore her bikini at the end of the summer. I kept handing her a t-shirt to cover up.

I had that problem when I was about 12, one summer I went from flat chested to a size C and that was in the late 80's, definitely embarrassing. My mom usually took me to Sears, they had a department for girls that had 1/2 sizes and was able to find suits that fit me well. I am not sure they have that anymore or not. I would still wear a tank top over my suit.

They usually do, especially this early in the season. Last year when I took my 12 year old cousin, we found all the juniors and misses suits in the same department, and it appears they did that again this year.

You ladies are scaring me. I am lucky that my DD11 still doesn't care. I bet that can change tomorrow.

She is wearing her speedos again this summer.

I guess I need to find a more fashion suit for when she goes to the beach with her little catty friends though. Suggestions for flat as a pancake thick super long torso tall child? Targets suits used to fit, but even the largest are too short in the torso, and tankinis and bikinis show way to much belly since she has a long torso.

Guess I will check out Land's end. Those suits NEVER fit me.

DD is double digits as well, she got one at Kohl's (she wanted underwire and it needed straps to hold them up!) we tried on at least 25 different suits but we found one. Ordering from Lands End is harder because we really don't know her size and our Sear's don't carry them. Last year we lucked out and it fit great. It's bad enough spending $65 on a bra! I didn't want to spend a fortune on a suit she may or may not wear.

Lands End does have suits for long torsos (or at least they did at one time).

Both DD15 and DD12 have Land's End tankinis. I let them pick from the women's section. DD15 is a size 2 (c cup :scared1:) and DD12 is a size 4. I told them the "bra" style tops were out of the question, but anything else was fair game. They both chose cute, age appropriate bathing suits that cover everything that needs to be covered, and nothing will fall out, if you know what I mean:thumbsup2.

I know I may get flamed for this, but I refuse to let my daugthers wear what "everyone else is wearing." I'm sorry, but I'm the Mommy and I pay the bills. And they're 12 and 15, they're not "advertising" anything if I have any say in the matter. I can't control what they do 10 years from now, but I can try and shape the direction they're headed.

PS I also have 2 boys, ages 10 and 13. It is SO much easier to dress them.

No flames here. I totally agree with you. With a little effort we Mom's can find something suitable that's also "cute". I'm not sure why my SIL let my niece pick out the bikinis she showed us. I guess she didn't want to put her foot down.

On a different note, my Sears carries the Land's End bathing suits so you can actually go in a try them on!

Here is another vote for Lands End. I don't think they are in stores, but I found short torso suits and large bust suits on their website. I used their size chart and ordered 2 sizes. I thought I was ordering DD12's current size and the next size up, but I ended up returning the smaller one to Sears. Lands End returns are easy.

This is what I found too. I put bathing suits into their easter baskets and bought a really cute one at Kohl's for dd13. I get the separates as well and found an adorable tankini in brown/teal/pink with brown boyshorts and she just loved it. I don't like bikinis at this age and stick with the tankinis.

Good luck--also try costco some times they have nice suits cheap.

I had the same problem with DD was that age. I got her suits at Kohls and Target. I was able to got tankini tops and boy short bottoms.

DD17 just tried on 2 cute tankinis at Target last weekend. She loved the purple/white polka dot & it covered great. She likes to wear shorts and they just had reg. bottoms so I didn't buy it. She's DD and it covered very well. Plus it fully covered the back and was not a tie back w/open sides like we've usually seen.

I am an adult who wears kids clothes and am very busty. I get mine at Old Navy and buy tankinis. I also buy a ton of mine at victoria secret, and not are all skimpy.

What size was the suit? My dd is the same size. Do you know if they have it online at Target.com so I can know what to look for at Target?

Thanks!! :thumbsup2

I got her some there last year... Gotta check their website... sale starts tomorrow :).

If she is busty, I really doubt the kids sizes will come close. My 11 year old flat chested wears the 14's at Justice, Kohls, ect... I would look online for a speedo suit. They both one piece and two.
