OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

Last long run of my 1/2 Marathon Novice Training program is in the books. It was supposed to be yesterday, but never had the time to get it in.

10 miles... watching a blank white wall... while running on the treadmill. :crazy2: 2 hours, 53 minutes and 50 seconds. I hope to never do that again. Thankfully some podcasts on my iPhone helped keep me going.

It was way too hot in the house to be running that distance on the treadmill.

I should be arriving at Pop Century on Wednesday around 2pm. I've got a short 2 mile run to get in and then probably hit MK with Dad for a while on Wednesday night.

I just now have this reoccurring nightmare that I get swept in the race on Saturday...

Laugh at the dream... You are good to go

I'm not trying to be cheeky, but maybe a size bigger?
I know the whole utility belt feeling. You could use velcro straps.
This year I will have my room key, park ticket and cell phone. Maybe a throw away bottle of gatorade or two for the start. If my shorts rip I'll have the aid group tape me up.

LOL size isn't really the issue. They fit plenty fine. My skin was sweaty and it was tough getting them back on after the bathroom break, and after they were on, I gathered a bit more inner-thigh fabric in my fingertips to give one more gentle yank, and it just went rrriiiippppp. I think I'll just loop them around my belt, like I've seen people do with jackets or shirts they don't want to "throw away".

If I can do it, you can do it :) Have faith!

Seriously, don't waste any energy worrying about the sweepers... I'm sure you are going to do great! Spend this week thinking positive thoughts!! Good luck!

We're into the final stretch of the taper now. A few more days and many of us will be in planes, trains, and automobiles heading south.

I was out for an 8 mile run today. I felt pretty tired and it took a bit more work to finish than most of my runs, but I think I'll chalk that up to not getting enough sleep last night. I tend to go to bed far too late so I need to focus on getting some decent rest over the next few nights leading up to next weekend.

Of course going to WDW may lead to the problem in the old commercial, "I'm too excited to sleep!"

We are arriving too late Friday to make the Pop meet. Do WISHers gather anywhere special race mornings?

Ronda

Ronda WISH'ers sometimes congregate near the "W" that is in the meet-up area in the area before you hit bag check. Also, there are usually a few WISH'ers waiting by the entrance to the walk up to the corrals. It is on the back side of the baggage tents, as far as you can go---until they are ready to let people walk to the corrals. There is also a bank of portalets there (and when I used them in 2010, they were not crowded)

What time do most go to sleep on Friday night before the half marathon? I am not one who can fall asleep early so trying to develop a plan... Should I try napping on Friday afternoon? Etc.

Non-marathon question.

Does anyone know the best way to get from a Disney Resort to Univeral Studios since we aren't renting car this time.

Thanks

Anyone else staying at All Star Movies? We arrive Thursday morning in orange "Storming the Castle" shirts.

From what I have read, the best mix of efficiency and cost containment is to book a Mears shuttle. If you don't already have tix, Dreams Unlimited has a good deal where you get a 1 day park to park ticket plus round trip Mears shuttle for $120/person. Otherwise, just the shuttle is $18 each way. They will pick you up at your Disney hotel at a time you designate and then you call them when you are ready to leave Universal. The Universal forum here has a sticky at the top with all your options.

That works, thanks

Getting a good night's sleep is more important on Thursday than on Friday since pre-race excitement/nerves will make it harder to get to sleep anyway. That said, I shoot to be in bed by 9-930 and get up at 330 to get ready to go.

Echoing John... The night before the night before is your best bet at getting a great night's sleep. Now saying that, for many that is the first night in a new bed and can be troubling. Set your AC down low and make sure your curtains are pulled and you will get a nice sleep that night.

With regard to Friday night bed times... Most resorts will have a little nagging set of noises raise up about 30 minutes post fireworks. So going to bed any earlier than 9pm is kind of a waste anyway. I find that for the most part is you shoot for lights out around 9:30 you will soon fall off to sleep. It will not be restful and 2 230 will roll around quickly. A word of note if you are at BLT or Contemporary. The water parade runs at 10PM... Do not plan on sleeping the first night you are in bed ahead of the dragon.

You will find that you will do just fine with less sleep on Saturday in the race. Save the napping for Saturday afternoon. Not too much napping as you need to keep the legs moving but a small little one is in order

My wife and I are doing the half on Saturday. I can’t believe I let her talk me into this…we’ve never done running until 3 months ago. We did 8 miles Friday, 9 yesterday (in 1:47-not good but OK considering how tough it’s been to find time to run), and planning 10 either tomorrow or Wednesday. I’m told if you can do 10 in practice that you can do 13 on a race day.
We leave Thursday afternoon and arrive Friday afternoon. Staying at Coronado Springs for the 1st time for 3 nights…using the 30% room only discount.
We haven’t bought park tickets yet. How do we get the runners discount on them? We’d like a one day for Saturday after the race (if we have enough energy left) and a park hopper for Sunday.

Well, I am happy to report that my booty injury is getting better, and I ran 4.7 miles today with a generous run/walk ratio, and averaged under 13 min/mile....so I should be good to go! :goodvibes

I am at Yacht Club Saturday and Sunday night and move over to the Boardwalk Villas for Monday and Tuesday night. Look forward to a meet up Monday, hopefully for a drinking around the world gathering.
