2010/2011 Armed Forces Salute Tickets

I will be purchasing Armed Forces Salute tickets for the first time in the next couple of weeks. I have been backreading, but I'm not sure I totally understand the procedures.

I am the spouse of retired AF, he will not be able to accompany this time. I will have my ID card with me. I will be purchasing two extra tickets for daughter and her fiance. So I'll need a total of 3 of the $138.00 Tickets. Can I go to Downtown Disney ticket office and take care of this on my own, or do I need to have daughter & fiance with me? I can activate the tickets after purchase, is that right?

I won't have a rental car, so getting SOG is a bit of a problem, so I've opted for Downtown Disney.

Last q-- Is it possible to get/activate these tickets at the parks?

Any tips/corrections will be very much appreciated. TIA! :goodvibes

Yes, you can go to DTD Guest Services. I have heard conflicting reports on whether or not all 3 of you will have to be there to activate. Some have said that they could and some have said that they could not.

However, you can fairly easily walk to SOG from the Polynesian, maybe 15 min. It's a nice walk along the path, if you aren't in a big rush, and you will save on the tax. You will still need to activate the tickets either at one of the parks or DTD, though. It may be easier from where you are staying to go to DTD then to Poly and walk to SOG, so it just depends how much the time is worth over saving the taxes.

gwynne, if you don't mind paying sales tax you can just both buy and activate your tickets at any Disney theme park ticket window on your first morning. The tax is 6.5%.

You can buy them at Disney--I just bought two a few weeks ago. You will have to pay sales tax on them. When you buy the tickets at Disney, they're already activated and ready to use, because you can only buy them with a military ID. They also look different than the ones you get at the base--they're paper tickets with the name of the person using them printed directly on the ticket. Hopefully CF can verify but I asked several times if they were ready to go (because I'm paranoid). My DD and DGD and I are going back for 4 days in August and I wasn't sure I still had tickets left, so I bought them directly at Disney where they could check before I shelled out the money.

They do not have to be with you to buy the tickets; my DD and DGD were not with me on my trip a few weeks ago.

I know it's too soon since they never come out with this until right before or right after they expire, but I wish they would let us know sooner since we need them for Thanksgiving if they have them and aren't blacked out.

Us too!

Actually, last year they extended it very early - April I believe. The year before that it was about two weeks after the current one ended (mid October) but last year it was super early.

I don't think that rules it out for this year, but the renewal date from last year has already passed.

my fingers are crossed for another military deal. or we'll get aps . . we are already dvc members

We always manage to go in October during F & W..between "Sorry, they are expired", and "There has been no decision made yet".

There was an article in the Army Times paper about 3 weeks ago talking about whether the program would continue or not, it just basically said that Disney hadn't made a decision about it at this time, but speculated that it may not.

My guess on this is if there is a new program it will not be an extension of the current program. The prices and possibly even some of the rules may be different.

Who Knows What EVIL Lurks In The Heart Of Disney Marketing?!

When Disney feels ready to implement their next promotion they will do so. If other recent promotions have been any indication, for about the first month nobody will really understand it and the Marketing people will not have thought out all the ramifications.

CF, I always laugh when I see your "evil in the heart of Disney marketing" response! :goodvibes

Ugh, I saw that. The Army Times drives me nuts. Just a bunch of rumint that gets soldiers all stirred up. I avoid it if I can.

Here's hoping Disney comes out with something soon. I can't see them not having anything. I agree with a pp that I'm sure they'll bring something out and then well all have to figure out the rules and how it works. Good luck to all going after September!

I'm confused about "activation". We are going at the end of the month with my folks. My dad is retired CG. We'll be buying the $138 + PH for all in our group. If we buy at SOG, are they activated? If not, does my dad have to be with us the first time we use them to activate them? We arrive on a Tuesday and will be buying the tickets that day. We had planned to start them the next morning, but we are going to MK earlier in the morning than my parents?

Also, I hear people talking about vouchers, etc. What type of tickets do you get if you purchase at SOG? Will they be the plastic cards or paper tickets? Is this different if you purchase at the park or DTD?

when you buy at SOG they are NOT activated. The service member HAS to be the one to activate them, so my suggestion is to buy them then head over to the TTC that same day and have your dad activate them. That way they'll be ready for you to go the next morning (and your dad won't have to be with you).

At SOG the tickets are hard plastic tickets.

But that's generally what we end up doing - we take a little monorail trip, activate, then head out to dinner on our first night. :)

Ok, I thought I knew this, can't I activate, as the spouse tickets for myself and my in-laws? We were going to send DH to Epcots front gate and I was going to take them in at IG.
