Gift Cards

The ones I don't really like are the restaurant gift cards that are $25. We don't go out to eat very much but when DH and I go out to eat we usually spend about $30 not including tip, so we still have to spend out of pocket, so those gift cards sometimes get tossed aside and sometimes forgotten.

Yeah I would say a restaurant card should be a minimum of 50 dollars if not more like 100 if you want to make sure the person gets a full meal.

We rarely get or give gift cards, but we don't exchange gifts outside our family (parents, etc), who know us or we know them well enough to pick something out that they like. The exception is iTunes cards for our kids. Does that make sense?

I don't think they are always a good thing to give or always a bad thing to give, they seem like a generic gift to me. I would not be happy to receive a gift card for clothes from my husband, but he is great at picking clothes I like and he enjoys shopping for me. The same with MIL, she just knows what I like and we often shop together. Maybe if we exchanged gifts with cousins or family that live away, gift cards would be a good thing; but then, wouldn't it be easier to just swap $50 bills? It seems like the same thing to me.

Not really. What if the person typically only gives $25 and knows that you like "Red Lobster" for example? I would be thrilled with a $25 card knowing full-well that it probably wouldn't even cover my meal. But it helps!

Personal preference but if someone is giving me a gift card I want it to cover the full thing. You wouldn't give someone half of something as a gift so why give a gift card that would cover half of something.

Another thread inspired by the Today show (I love being able to watch it when I'm home!) This one might get messy but I want to share my opinion. Kathie Lee and Hoda said that giving gift cards is just lazy. I DISAGREE 100%!!!! I love getting gift cards and I think they are thoughtful and a great gift to allow people to get what they want. I got amazon gift cards this Christmas and love them because I can buy what I want. I think they are better then giving someone a gift they might not use or want! Just my two cents!

I love gift cards because I can get stuff I would not be able to get other wise

I would rather have CASH personally. I really do not like store specific cards.

My dad gave us CABELA'S cards. While I love the store, now I have to drive an hour to go to it.

HEY....maybe I can use it ONLINE! Kirk out! :scratchin

I love, love, love gift cards!!! I do appreciate if it's some place I eat/shop though. I love the opportunity to go get something just for me - it's an indulgence I don't often get.

My grandma always gives us money for Christmas, but it is with the understand that we do something fun with it, not pay bills. Obviously, she can't force that, but it is a gift that comes from her heart to give us more family/couple time. As for cash my kids get - I do put in the bank for safe keeping, but what is in there, is theirs. If they want it out to go shopping or for a trip it's theirs. I don't hold it hostage.

I disagree about the restaurant gift cards needing to be a certain amount - unless maybe if it's given to the couple. Otherwise, it's to cover one meal. And honestly, anything that offsets the cost for us is good in my book.

Generally, I'd rather get gift cards than "stuff" because I don't have room in my apartment to put more stuff. Gift cards for restaurants, or for iTunes, or for places like Target where I can buy consumables, are great.

My first preference for a gift from a family member is either something homemade or pictures. My second preference from family members is a gift card. From friends, gift cards are always preferred.

I will give Amex or Visa gift cards they can be used everywhere.

I get lots of restaurant gift cards and am fine with $25 ones. And it's like $70-$80 for my family to go out to eat. Who cares if I have to put in the rest, someone else gave me $25 towards the meal, that's good enough for me. :-)

Like I said before, you would never give someone half of a bag or another gift so why pay for just half a meal?

Just my opinion. I don't go out to eat a lot so maybe that changes it but I feel like giving just 25 dollars for a meal at a restaurant you know costs more is somewhat tacky.

Love the $25 restaurant GC because it will be spent all at one time (don't like keeping track of what is left on the GC), and since we usually leave the tip in cash anyway, having a little more on-hand to cover the difference is easy.

Maybe! We go out to eat 1-2xs a week, whether I have a gift card or not.
And technically, if I received a $25 gift card to someplace like Chili's it actually would cover MY whole meal, we'd still be paying for my husband and kids, but if it was a gift for me, it would pay for me.

Lol, I gave my son a headset for the xbox one. Should have bought the whole combo so I wouldn't be tacky.

My inlaws have my son money for texts. But they won't all be covered. Tacky tacky!

Maybe when the givers go to those restaurants they eat smaller meals and that card would cover them.

Far tackier is looking down one's nose at the gifts given by others.

Exactly my view on it. A gift card shouldn't cover then entire couple/family unless it's given as such. If it's to an individual, it should cover that individual. But honestly any amount that offsets my costs are good with me :)

I am not downing my nose at any gifts. I personally just think giving half of something is a little weird.

But come on you should assume the person will be going to dinner with one other person.
