women in your 30s or older - clothing question

Like everything else in life it's a personal preference, personally, as a 21 year old I do not like to wear anything with a brand name slapped on the front/ back like PINK or VICTORIAS SECRET, or American Eagle, now that's not saying I do not wear things from there, or that I didn't in the past

As long as someone is dressed appropriately/ professionally when needed, I don't see why it matters.

Oh, and I go out in public in my pajama pants, I'm a lazy college student. Bite me.

So my question is, it's not that your two old but why if you are 40 would you want to look like a High schooler?

In general I don't do malls. Now I do love Bloomings, nostroms and Lord and taylor. I love Dillards also but they are not on the east coast.

Exactly what I was trying to say but you said it so much better! Around here Middle Schoolers wear Abercrombie, VS Pink, Aeropastle. By High School all the girls are trying to define their own style so they prefer boutiques, Forever 21 for it's large selection, and maybe AE for jeans only. I don't get why moms or women over 30 would WANT to dress in a way that is so identified with young teens. Even the older teens have moved on.

From about 30 on, I've shopped mostly at Dillards since that's the nicest store that we have here. I will occasionally get something at Penneys.

I'm thirty - I get most of my clothes at Ann Taylor, Ann Taylor Loft, Anthropologie, Macy's, and J. Crew.

I think some people get the impression that I am walking around with labels plastered all over me. :rotfl:

To set the record straight, I buy my jeans at Aeropostale, and only when they are on clearance (several pair were less than $10). I have purchased exactly one sweater there in my life, and DD has taken it from me this year. I also have two winter coats from there that I absolutely love. I have never set foot in Hollister or A & F, and I have been in AE exactly one time (years ago with my sister who is 11 years younger than me). As I mentioned early on in the thread, I tend to stick with Target and Old Navy/Gap for shirts because they carry an XS in the women's department. I do shop in the junior's department from time to time, but I never buy revealing/too tight/too young looking clothes. I am a very modest dresser, and I dress to my body type and age. It just so happens that some of my clothes come from a different area of the store because they fit better. I shouldn't have to swim in a top that is too big simply because I'm 36. I buy what I like, and I buy what I want. If someone has an issue with what I wear, so be it. That's their problem, not mine.

Stepping off my soapbox now. :goodvibes

:rotfl2: To clarify, I do not dress like that everyday. That is my Barbie costume from a past MNSSHP. Most people around here are familiar with my costume. I just chose it because it clearly shows my body size.

ETA:that is not my real hair, either. :rotfl:

You look like a barbie.:thumbsup2

Really don't understand the whole stigma woman have over clothing.

I'm 5'11 dd's weight 150-170 since i was 12.

So finding clothes that fit long legs, long waist and dds isn't easy, don't care what label as long as it makes me look and feel sexy.

Hadn't been to Aeropostale in a while, so I went to their webpage and saw a bunch of cute stuff! I don't see how most of it is inappropriate for women of any age.

Do those of you who think that a 35 - 55 year old woman shouldn't shop at Aeropostale think these things are inappropriate or too young?

Nope, those are great! :thumbsup2

To answer the original question, we don't have any chain stores here, and when I travel to the US I am trying to get the most bang for my buck so I am looking for deals. I start with Walmart, Target, Ross, Marshalls etc. Then I work my way around the mall stores. Time is usually limited so there are stores I won't go in because past experience has shown that the clothes in there don't suit me. Aeropostale etc. are usually skipped for that reason. Nothing to do with being "too young" - just I have found in the past that I am too curvy, or something. I do like Loft for classics, and I have found some nice classics in JCP and other department stores. My favourite grey business casual work pants came from Walmart of all places - I almost didn't bother to try them on because really, Walmart?? But they were great! One thing I find is that each season the styles change, and last season I may have loved a certain store but this season everything is cut wrong for me.

I am 45 and my friends range from late 30s to early 50s. We all like to wear stuff that suits us but also has some trend to it. So while we don't go totally funky like the teens, we will put some trend in somewhere. If the style is really low cut pants and that doesn't work for us, we will pick some other aspect of trendy, like shoes or accessories. We will generally wear only one trendy piece with one classic piece, for example, so it isn't overdone. We don't care about logos, but neither do our teens - they don't walk around with words splashed all over their chests. The pre-teens may wear a cute saying or something, but kids here don't care about your US chain store logos. Pre-teens and teens here are all about camis (and other strappy tops) and booty shorts right now - simple but bare (it's hot!). 40-somethings will wear the top but not the booty shorts - instead we will wear capris or rolled up jeans. We wear the same stuff all year (tropics), so we don't follow US trends that closely. Our local stores are full of cute little strappy tops which are worn by many different age groups.

The gray tshirt looks a little young imo and the only problem with the jeans is that they are low rise, which I do think is inappropriate after a certain age.

At some point dressing "too young" does absolutely no favors for a person.

Given the red shirt that Smith posted, the problem with that one is that it is made of the really cheap stretchy synthetic material and that is why it doesn't look right. In fact, it is the kind of shirt my 40-something coworker (with a great body - not disputing that) wears and I think it looks like she is trying to dress too young. I call it cougar clubwear.

I don't see VS pink as a middle school thing. I think I'd be a little more creeped out that parents are letting their middle schoolers wear it versus a 30 year old.

If you are going to insult me, at least be kind enough to get my name right. It's smitch, not Smith. ;)

So we have one person that thinks the red shirt is 13 year old attire, and one person who thinks it is 40 year old cougar attire. That's pretty hilarious. :rotfl2:

I'm sticking with it being "a well fitting shirt to wear to a Christmas party" attire. :rotfl:

This thread got me thinking of other fashion items.

I have been wearing UGGS for years.. I love them, they are SOOO comfortable.. I also love Coach and MK purses..

I don't pick my daughter up from school very often, as it isn't next door, but when I do, I see Canada Goose jackets and Uggs and MK purses.. Now, according to the "etiquette", these are things I should NEVER wear or it seems I want to be a teen? I don't buy them or wear them because the teens do, I buy them AND wear them because of comfort and/or style. Same goes for hair.. I don't have long hair per say, but it isn't short either.. It is shoulder length.. I am not a fan of myself with short hair, and it suits me better..

Really? Interesting. I definitely can see that on a 45/50 year old.

You know you're out there trying to catch all the young men in your cheap shirt. Don't try to deny it. ;)

With all due respect, how do you know anyone's jeans are low rise? Provided you wear an "age appropriate" top that covers all the goods, I am not sure you would ever know about how low the rise of my jeans is.

Sorry you feel I was insulting to you. In general, I don't find the things you wear to be too young, based on the few pics you have posted here over the years. I just don't like that shirt in particular based on the reasons I noted. It was not meant to be a personal attack. I don't like clothing made from that type of material because it I think it gives off a message which is never flattering to the wearer.

Funny how that rarely happens, huh? :rotfl:

I'd venture to say that many of us have seen more buttcrack than we care to.

I was wondering the same thing.

Obviously if you wear low rise jeans they're being accompanied by crop tops.
