Feeding the Family: Disney Dining Reviews

These are great reviews! I'm enjoying the way you're structuring them so far. And I have to say that, though a pre-park reservation is awesome, all the stuff I've seen from BOG breakfast makes me lean much more toward something like Crystal Palace (where we've got a just-before-opening ADR for the next trip) just for variety. Plus I like characters :P.

Coral Reef seems like a cool spot - I tend to agree that I'd probably do it more for the view and put it on the "maybe" list after we'd done it once. There are so many different things to experience at WDW that I've got a very long list of to-try places!

Looks like you guys got off to an awesome start :) Looking forward to more!

Restaurant: Be Our Guest
Location: Magic Kingdom - Fantasyland
Meal Type: Dinner

Atmosphere: I think it’s pretty safe to say that the atmosphere for this restaurant is one of the best for themed dining experiences. On this visit, we had dinner in the West Wing. This room is considerably darker than the Ball Room or the Rose Garden, but it was perfect for dinner. There are also thunder and lightning effects, so it might be a bit scary for little kids. But, there are a couple of magic things that happen in this room that you don’t want to miss!

View attachment 101562

In the far corner of the room, there is the enchanted rose under glass. If you watch it closely, the magical petals fall from the rose over time. As the last petal falls, the Prince’s Portrait transforms from a slashed image of the Prince to a slashed picture of the Beast. My 6 year old daughter first pointed out the picture transformation to us. Originally she said it happened when the thunder and lightning struck, but we eventually asked what the trigger was when we couldn’t pinpoint it.

Food:
Rolls - They serve a basket of freshly baked rolls and some soft served butter once you sit down at the table. The rolls are a little on the hard side (I'm sure they must have a fancy French name), but they were still yummy. Sorry, no pic though : /

French Onion Soup – We’ve had this on a previous trip as well. The description says they use Gruyere cheese, but it honestly tastes more like mozzarella. There is little onion in the soup and more cheese than bread on top, making the flavor a little cheesy for my taste when it comes to a good French Onion Soup. It’s definitely good, but I do not think it’s fabulous.

View attachment 101563 Oh my gosh...the French Onion Soup looks "to die for!"

Grilled Strip Steak – My husband had this for dinner and thought it was wonderful. The steak was cooked perfectly Medium and he really enjoyed the flavor of the Garlic-Herb Butter.

View attachment 101564 ....and so does the Steak...WOW! YUMMY!

Braised Pork (Coq au Vin Style) – I had this slow-cooked pork for dinner. The meat was extremely tender and had a nice flavor. It’s cooked with “Mushrooms, Onions, Carrots, and Bacon”, but as you can see from the picture, there were no carrots and only a few traces of the other ingredients. It’s also served with a seasonal vegetable. I thought this was going to be green beans (as I’ve seen in an older review), but it turned out to be asparagus. Next time I’ll remember to ask for a substitute J I’ve never eaten cauliflower, but the puree was actually really good since it was mixed with the meat sauce!

View attachment 101565 I am definitely going to this restaurant...your pics have convinced me. THANK YOU!!! :)

Kids' Mickey Check Meal - Chicken Brochette – My 6-yearold daughter ordered this for her dinner. It’s essentially just a skewered strip of plain, baked chicken, so this was a good option for my picky eater. She asked for fries instead of the seasonal vegetable. There was still broccoli included with her meal, so she enjoyed both sides.

View attachment 101566

Kids' Mickey Check Meal - Mickey Meatloaf- My 4 year old son had this and loved it! He dug in and started eating so quickly that by the time I thought about taking a picture it was nearly gone already. He also substituted some fries for the zucchini, but the meal still came with broccoli. He didn’t want to try the “Orange "Stuff" for Dipping” and since I’m not that brave either, I’m still not sure what the heck it actually is (maybe a ketchup and mayo mix?).

Kid’s Dessert Note: Unlike other Disney table service restaurants that have a kid’s choice dessert you order after the meal, they automatically list and assign the fruit cup with the kid’s meals. If you do not order the kid’s dessert, then the dessert price is deducted from the kid’s meal price. On the Be Our Guest menu, it lists the Fruit Cup dessert with each kid meal. If you do not want the fruit cup, let your server know when you place your order. Otherwise, they bring the fruit cup out automatically with the child’s dinner and the $1.75 charge is added on to the bill. They forgot to bring my son’s fruit with the meal, so that charge was removed later.

Meeting the Beast: Dinner is the only meal when the Beast makes an appearance. He will briefly walk into each of the three dining rooms to wave and “welcome his guests” each hour, but does NOT go table to table like at other character meals. Once you have finished your meal, there is the opportunity to wait in line for a photo with the beast in “his study” (a.k.a. the menu/register room used for breakfast and lunch quick services) on the way out of the restaurant. We only waited about 5-10 minutes in line on the way out, so it wasn’t bad at all. Our dinner was a bit late in the evening though (8:35-9:15ish), so I’m not sure if that made a difference or not.

View attachment 101567

Adding It Up: Here’s the break-down for those interested. We are AP holders, so I have no idea how a dining plan would apply. We do have the Tables in Wonderland card though, so it deducts 20% from the total cost and automatically includes an 18% gratuity during use. (You have the option to write in additional gratuity after the transaction if you choose to do so)

View attachment 101568

Overall Impression: We really enjoyed dinner at Be Our Guest. It’s a bit pricey in comparison to their lunch menu, but it was a nice experience to let the kids meet the Beast! If you are not interested in meeting him (or are happy just seeing him in a parade), then visiting this restaurant for lunch might be a nicer option.

Restaurant: The Coral Reef
Location: Epcot – Future World
Meal Type: Lunch

Atmosphere: Everything in this restaurant from the carpet, to the ceiling, and the light fixtures in between add to the feeling that you are completely under the sea for this dining experience. It’s not a very large dining room, so the noise level wasn’t bad at all and made for a nice lunch environment. (stock img)

Upon checking in for our 1:25 lunch reservation, I requested a table up against the aquarium. I’m sure quite a few people must request this, and although the restaurant was busy, we only ended up waiting in the lobby for about 10minutes and were happily seated right up against the tank. They issue you a Creature Guide to identify the animals in the aquarium tank during your visit, and the close table was perfect for viewing the smaller fish up close and being able to identify them on the guide. It was also the perfect spot to get up close and personal with some sharks and a very curious turtle as well!

View attachment 101653

Food:

Rolls and Butter– They started the meal by bringing out a basket or warm rolls and some butter with black sea salt for the table to share. I’m not sure you can really go wrong with warm bread and butter, so I’d say it was delicious J

View attachment 101654

Creamy Lobster Soup – This soup is described as being made with made with Tarragon and Brandy. I honestly could not tell you what either of those ingredients taste like individually, but the soup did have a nice flavor, so it definitely worked! There were only a couple of small pieces of lobster meat in the soup though, so if you are looking for lobster chunks, you might be disappointed. Overall, it was still a really nice tasting soup and something I would order again.

View attachment 101655

Caesar Salad with Chicken Breast – Since it was lunch, I opted for a salad. I will definitely say this is probably the best chicken Caesar salad I’ve had at any of the Disney Parks so far. The portion was really large and the Caesar dressing was great. The salad was a little underdressed, but I had asked for extra dressing on the side originally, so I just added to it. The cheese crisp was really yummy as well!

View attachment 101656

Seared Mahi Mahi – My husband chose the mahi, which (according to the waitress) is their signature dish. It was served with Laughing Bird Shrimp, Hearts of Palm, Jasmine Rice, Cilantro, and a Coconut-Lime Sauce. We are normally Mahi fans, but neither of us cared for the taste of his mahi, so he sent it back.

Coral Reef Mac & Cheese – My son had the mac and cheese and seemed to approve of it. It was a very large portion, so he only ate half of it before he didn’t want anymore. It was pretty much just a standard elbow mac with velveeta cheese and didn’t seem like anything special, but as long as he enjoyed it, that’s all that mattered.

View attachment 101658

Jr. Reef Steak – Through process of elimination, my daughter opted for the kid’s steak. Although the steak looked beautiful, she really didn’t eat much of it. Looking back, I should have tried to request some simple fried shrimp instead and she would have been much happier I think. The broccoli was steamed nicely though and she did enjoy that.

View attachment 101659

Dessert – For dessert, the kids requested the Seaside Cupcakes. It was a plain vanilla cake with light icing that was topped with fish shaped sprinkles and a sugar shaped starfish.

View attachment 101661

Adding it Up: This is the break-down for those interested. They removed the mahi from the bill since we sent it back and my husband chose not to try anything else from here. 20% was deducted for the Tables in Wonderland membership and an automatic 18% was touch! LOL :)added for gratuity with TiW use (option to write in more afterwards).

View attachment 101662

Overall Impression: We liked the restaurant for the atmosphere more than the food. It’s something we enjoyed doing once, but since there are other tank viewing options within the park, we’ll probably skip this as a restaurant option next time and go to one of Epcot’s many other restaurants.
...The "starfish" on the cupcake is a nice touch! :)

Yes...very small portions, indeed. But, getting to take a good look around at all of the decorations & artwork, virtually having the run on the plac,e was a definite plus!

Restaurant
: The Crystal Palace
Location: Magic Kingdom – Main Street
Meal Type: Breakfast

Atmosphere:

The building is open, light, architecturally interesting, and overall - really lovely! The skylights and surrounding windows really make it feel like you are in a greenhouse. I’m not sure how I’d feel about sitting by a window near the front porch though (as there is usually a wait to get in and I’d be uncomfortable with families sitting outside the windows watching that table), but the rest of the seating is decent. My favorite spot to sit along the windows that overlook the bridge to Adventure Land, since the view is great! There’s also a pretty planter just inside of the restaurant entrance with cute topiaries of the characters, so it’s a nice spot to snag a picture on the way out to remember your visit there :)

Even though this is a large restaurant that is packed with tables, the buffet itself is pretty spread out in the center of the restaurant. There are two of each buffet station on either side that offer the same selections, with the hot foods along the back wall, cold foods on either side, and islands with an assortment of pastries and cereals.

crystal-palace-00.jpg

Food:

Fruit Bar:

There was definitely a variety of fruits at the cold counter. Amongst the choices were Strawberry Yogurt, Honey Yogurt, Melon, Cantaloupe, Strawberries, Grapes, Oranges, and Pineapple. I’ve also enjoyed the Bagels from the early morning selection and my kids always seem to request a few cheese cubes. I think this might change slightly based on seasonal items, but there is usually a nice variety.

1.jpg

Meats:

Two popular hot plates are probably the Sausage and Bacon trays. I don’t particularly care for bacon, but it’s one of my favorite offerings and I’ll share why. I love it because my hubby loves it, and as long as I can keep the never-ending-plate-of-bacon in front of him, he’ll listed to me rattle on about any crazy plans I have for the day and do it with a smile on his face : ) Win-Win. There’s also Corned Beef Hash, but we haven’t tried that. You can also find fish at the cold bar (I think it was Salmon), but I’ve always skimmed past it.

2.jpg

Eggs: There is a variety of eggs available on the buffet as well. My daughter always prefers the hard boiled eggs from the fruit bar and my son usually wants the scrambled eggs at the hot counter. The scrambled eggs are pretty basic, but he enjoys them. The Western Breakfast Pizza is ok, but I find it a little dense. There’s also a tray of Texas Scrambled Eggs, are my absolute favorite! My husband prefers the Omelet station, which it at the center of the hot buffet. Here you can pick from various ingredients (such as cheese, ham, bacon, sausage, & a couple of others) to be made into a fresh omelet. To save time, you can order the omelet, make up the rest of your plate at the buffet, and return to the omelet station to pick it up. But, they really cook them so quickly that standing there for a couple of minutes isn’t bad either.

3.jpg

For The Love of Carbs: One of my new favorites is the Puffed French Toast, which was almost like a Chinese doughnut and surprisingly good! The other traditional breakfast picks (Mickey Waffles, Pancakes, and the Biscuits & Gravy) have also been consistently good. From the breakfast potatoes available, I can only recall the Cheesy Potatoes, which were yummy. There is also a pastry island with some selections for your sweet tooth! Some of the items available were chocolate croissants, pound cake, scones, and our favorite - cinnamon rolls.

4.jpg
5.jpg

Other Selections:

Some of the other foods that I noticed around the buffet were an assortment of cereals (like cheerios and bran flakes), oatmeal, and grits. I might be forgetting some though, as it’s easy to just stay focused on making a plate of your favorites while visiting the buffet. There is also an interesting thing called Breakfast Lasagna, which I suppose is the restaurant’s signature morning dish? Even so, I admit I cannot bring myself to try it. For anyone interested, the description is a dish that consists of “Layers of Waffles, Pancakes, Pound Cake, Strawberries, and Banana Topped with Pastry Cream and Caramelized Sugar”.

6.jpg

Meeting the Characters:

At this restaurant, you’ll meet Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore, and Piglet. Winnie and Tigger are also available to meet in the park next to the Pooh ride, but I think this might be the only location that you can meet Eeyore and Piglet. The nicest part about character meals is having the characters come to you! The characters will make their way individually around the tables to sign autographs and take a picture, so keep an eye out for when one is approaching so that you don’t miss them while on a buffet trip. They will also periodically play music and have the kids join in for a cute Friendship Day Celebration Parade around the restaurant , so you’ll see the characters for a while throughout your meal.

7.jpg

Adding It Up: I believe the age to qualify for a kid’s price was between 3-9. Here’s a breakdown of a breakfast for two adults and two children. This restaurant accepts Tables in Wonderland discount cards, so this receipt shows a 20% discount and then an automatic 18% gratuity included.

8.jpg

Overall Impression: This is by far our favorite restaurant for Sunday morning breakfasts! It’s a little pricey, but the atmosphere and variety of food is definitely worth it to us. It’s also one of the three restaurants in the Magic Kingdom (Cinderella’s Royal Table, Be Our Guest, and The Crystal Palace) that you can make a pre-park opening reservation at for Breakfast. So, if you are lucky enough to grab one of those early reservations, you’ll be in a great position within that park once you’ve finished your meal to hit some rides before the crowd gets too heavy.

Restaurant: Cinderella’s Royal Table
Location: Magic Kingdom – Main Street
Meal Type: Dinner

Atmosphere
What to say? Well, it’s a castle! Every detail of this enchanted structure brings the fairy tale to life. If you’re looking at the castle from the exterior, the restaurant level is located just behind all of the stained glass windows.

After you check in at the podium in the castle breezeway, you are given a waiting slip and ushered into the Entrance Hall where you’ll meet Cinderella. There’s a suit of armor, coats of arms, and a lovely fireplace all surrounded by stunning architecture. This is where I’d really like to show a magnificent picture of the Entrance hall, but the room is pretty small and, on the night of our visit, the room was pretty packed with people. Make sure you look around though, because there are some details you won’t want to miss. We were thrilled to see Jaq and Gus sitting up on the little ledge near the fireplace!

3 Entrance Hall.jpg

Once your name is called, you can either take the spiral stairs that feature a lovely Cinderella stained glass window or the elevator up to the second floor where the restaurant is located. Once again, I was expecting to see a dining room with views like the stock image. What we got was the first table to the right at the top of the staircase, and it did not have such a great view. It was still possible to see the windows on the other side of the room and get a glimpse of some of the ceiling in the center, but it was a little disappointing being tucked off into the far corner. It was also impossible to see the characters when they were announced and made their grand entrance into the dining hall to start the table visit rotation.

Food

Even though I had looked at the menus ahead of time, I still didn’t realize exactly how this meal worked. Apparently each guest picks out their own appetizer, entrée, and dessert. Here’s a look at the adult and children’s menus.

7 Menu.jpg

Appetizers:

The meal starts with a basket of warm rolls and butter for the table. There wasn’t anything “special” about them, but it’s always nice to have some warm bread!

8 Rolls.jpg

I selected the Castle Salad -Mixed Greens, Apples, Cucumbers, and Candied Walnuts topped with shaved Romano Cheese and a hint of Herb Vinaigrette- for my first course. It was a nice, fresh choice with an exceptionally tasty dressing. The salad was actually fairly large for a side, so I didn’t even finish it despite how good it was.

My husband chose the Pork Belly Confit - served with Raspberry Habanero Sauce, Blistered Tomatoes, Micro Cilantro, and Radish – for his appetizer. Here’s where I start to rave about the food. I do admit that the appetizer is bite-size small, but (once you remove the micro cilantro) it’s SO good! If given the option again, I’d pass up the larger portion of “good” salad for a smaller portion of “wow” pork.

The kids both decided to pick the Bite-sized Cheddar Cheese and Grapes for their starters. Once again, I was surprised that this appetizer was a pretty large portion size. A few bites of cheese were already eaten when this picture was taken, but you can still see the large cluster of the sweet grapes. The kids were really happy with this option!
9 Appetizers.jpg

Entrees:

Everything on the menu sounded delicious, but I ultimately decided to go with the Pan-seared all-Natural Chicken. It is traditionally served with farro risotto, seasonal vegetables, rendered pancetta, and poultry jus. Since I’d just had a lot of salad, I substituted the veggie option for some gouda mashed potatoes to pass off to my husband instead (top pf pic). The chicken was a lovely piece that was neatly placed on the bed of risotto, so naturally I started cutting up the chicken right away and butchered the plate before the picture was taken :p The chicken was moist and flavorful, but the star of the show was that risotto. It wasn’t as creamy as the traditional risottos I’ve grown up with, but the flavor was wonderful!

My husband had the Steak and Shrimp, which consisted of a grilled beef tenderloin and roasted shrimp served with green beans (instead of carrots) and gouda mashed potatoes. The server also brought out an additional side of green beans just after the meal was delivered for some reason. Maybe they thought that the original serving size didn’t seem correct? The two plump shrimp were perfectly cooked, but with no exceptional seasoning to be excited about. The steak, however, was fabulous! It was tender and flavorful and the only complaint is that there wasn’t more of it.

10 Adult Entree.jpg

I honestly thought my daughter would have chosen the beef tenderloin since she loves red meat, but she decided on having the Chicken Nuggets instead. The nuggets were lightly breaded white meat chunks that ended up being very pedestrian, so it seems like a safe choice for any picky eater. The gouda mashed potatoes are a little dry, but the flavor is very understated and overall they were pretty popular with my husband and daughter.

My son went with the roasted chicken leg. This dish is normally served with brown rice pilaf and broccolini, but he opted for green beans and corn instead. The chicken was very moist and he loved the corn, but he did not like the green beans at all.

11 Kid Entree.jpg

Desserts:
The seasonal dessert being offered at the restaurant on this night was a cheesecake, and it looked absolutely delicious. Despite the temptation to try the seasonal option, we just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to try the classics instead.

I selected the Gus and Jaq's Favorite, which is a white chocolate-jasmine tea mousse, lemon and lime curd with honey-oat crisp. The only time I’d ever spoke of curds before was when referencing Little Miss Muffit, I’m not a huge honey fan, and I’m certain the only mousse I’ve tried tasted heavily of chocolate, but I figured I’d give Gus & Jaq’s Favorite a try. This ended up being the BEST decision I’d made all night as the dessert was absolutely fabulous!

My husband chose the Signature Dessert – achocolate tart with caramel, hazelnut, chocolate sauce, raspberry sauce, and gelato. I would have enjoyed some additional raspberry sauce to offset some of the chocolate, but overall it was still another excellent selection.

The children both decided to have the Peanut Butter S'mores for dessert. I don’t think there can be a bad dessert that includes peanut butter, chocolate, toasted marshmallows, and graham crackers – so naturally this was a hit. There was also a cool cocoa dragon stenciled on their plates to the side of each dessert, which the kids thoroughly enjoyed seeing.

12 Desserts.jpg

Wishing Ceremony

In the Dining Hall, children are referred to as Prince and Princess and they are given either a magic wand or a sword. Each child is also given a special Wishing Star. During your meal, there is a special “Wishing Ceremony” that takes place where you wave your magic wand or sword and make a wish upon your wishing star and say that magic “Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo!” phrase. These souvenirs are yours to keep when you leave.

13 Event.jpg

Meeting the Characters
Cinderella will greet you in the welcome hall, and the other princesses will make the rounds to tables upstairs while you dine. The characters available to meet upstairs will vary. On our visit, Rapunzel, Jasmine, and Aurora were there in addition to Cinderella.
15 Characters.png

Adding it Up
This is a breakdown of our dining cost. The CRT reservation was pre-pay, so there was no opportunity to deduct the Tables in Wonderland discount ahead of time. When I called to ask about it, customer service agent told me to just show the card to our server on the date of the reservation. Our server took the card and they calculated a refund amount. This is the receipt they gave us at the end of the meal.

16 AddingItUp.jpg

For additional reference, the refund actually came back a couple of days later as $36.97. I’m not sure why there was a .15 cent difference, but I admit I wasn’t interested enough to spend the time doing calculations to figure it out :)

Overall Impression
While pricey, we felt that the CRT dining experience was definitely worth doing at least once. Waiting in line at the Princess Fairytale Hall just to meet Cinderella and Aurora alone can easily take an hour. For the additional investment, we avoided a miserably long line for the two headliners, met Jasmine and Ariel (also avoiding long lines), had an excellent table service meal in a one-of-a-kind atmosphere, and received a few fun souvenirs. The dinner food selection also seemed varied enough to please a variety of people, whether you enjoy things plain or with layers of flavor. Overall, we really enjoyed our time spent at Cinderella’s Royal Table and would definitely consider doing it again at a later date.

Hello, nice review. I have wanted to try Coral Reef restaurant, but my DH is not a sea food person so it always gets put on the next time list. I also want to try it because I know my boys would love the atmosphere.

I agree with you 100% on Coral Reef - it's a cool atmosphere but the food is very underwhelming. I'm glad we didn't do breakfast at BOG, we've done lunch twice and it was again a great atmosphere but so so food.

What do you do when you don’t have lunch reservations on a hot and humid day in the Animal Kingdom? We took our chances at getting a table at the Rainforest Café and were pleasantly surprised to not only be seated within 10 minutes, but to have a fun time as well. This was our experience at the Rainforest Café.

Restaurant:
Rainforest Cafe
Location: Animal Kingdom – park entrance
Meal Type: Lunch

Atmosphere

From the moment you walk in the entrance, you’re surrounded by a highly themed atmosphere. I’m typically not a huge fan of fake plants dangling over my dinner plates because, let’s face it, artificial plants are a magnet for clinging dust bunnies. I’ll give the cleaning staff credit though, because I did not see any dangling dust on this visit.

Within the jungle, you'll find large, animatronic animals -such as gorillas, elephants, birds, and butterflies- are positioned within the restaurant, positioned amidst the trees. There are also large saltwater aquariums throughout the space that add a welcome breath of life to the scenery. The lighting is pretty dim in the restaurant, which creates the feeling that you are pretty deep in the rainforest. The sounds of the forest are audible the entire time, so naturally, this restaurant is a little on the loud side once it’s full of guests. An additional live “thunderstorm” produces rain, thunder, and lightning every half hour inside of the restaurant. The storm could be startling to some small children, but my four and six year old absolutely loved it!

2 Atmosphere.jpg

The bar has a fascinating lighted water treatment across the front and features a collection of fun animal-themed barstools. I admit, I think I want some of these barstools in my own home! Apparently I didn’t get a better image of the aquariums, but you can see part of the large one that surrounds the entrance door in the background of the image below. Additionally, the rain during the thunderstorm falls directly into the rocky ridge behind the backseat of the booths and forms a curtain of rain in areas of the restaurant.

2 b atmosphere.jpg

Food
We were pretty happy with the large selection of American cuisine food choices at this restaurant. Here’s a closer look at the menu options and what we selected.

Big Islander Chicken Caesar Salad

It’s no surprise that I chose my favorite quick-pick meal, a chicken Caesar salad, for lunch. It’s described as a classic Caesar salad topped with grilled chicken and grated Parmesan. This salad is titled appropriately because it truly is “Big”! Pretty much every other chicken salad I’ve eaten at Disney was served with HALF of the amount of the chicken that came on this dish. The Caesar dressing was tasty, the chicken was moist, and there was plenty of delicious cheese as well, so I’d definitely order this salad again.

5 - salad.jpg

The Beastly Burger

This burger also lives up to its name – it’s enormous! The Beastly Burger consists of two beef burgers topped with a fried onion ring and garnish. My husband also added bacon to the burger and it was served with fries and a pickle on the side. Hands down, this was the biggest and the best burger he’s had on Disney property to date.

Here’s another picture to fully appreciate this mammoth-sized burger.

Rainforest Character Cups

Since we didn’t make any other merchandise purchases this day and the kid’s had been excellent throughout the Animal Kingdom, we decided to go ahead and let them order the character cups. The kids are still using them at home for other drinks, so I admit they are decently durable and relatively cute cups. Each cup is also sitting on a temporary/removable compartment that contains a small toy figure of either the frog or iguana, so it’s another fun little keepsake.

Jurassic Chicken Tidbits

My daughter chose to go with the chicken nuggets. There’s honestly nothing good I can say about these, except for the fact that they might appeal to a picky eater that prefers the traditional frozen nuggets. For a side she chose the applesauce, and once again, it’s just your standard prepackaged cup. Since a drink also came with the kid’s meals, we selected the Capri Sun packages to just carry with us for later. At $8.99, this meal was definitely overpriced.

Castaway Kid’s Pizza

Doing his best Home Alone impression, my son opted for “a lovely cheese pizza, just for me!” The personal pizza actually seemed pretty fresh and he really enjoyed it. It is also a good size for a kid’s meal. My 4 year old couldn’t finish it, but it’s probably a decent portion for children at the higher end of the age bracket. He also chose the applesauce and Capri Sun as his sides to wrap up this entrée.

Here’s a closer look at the kid’s meals.

Adding It Up

This restaurant did not accept the Tables in Wonderland discount card, but they do honor the 10% Passholder or DVC Discount. It was a little pricier because of the souvenir cups, but otherwise we felt it was right on par for a decent table service lunch.

Overall Impression

We were very happy with the adult lunch entrees and felt that the price was appropriate for those selections. The kid’s meals were hit and miss, but the highly themed atmosphere made up for it from the children’s point of view. Although we really enjoyed the atmosphere, this chain restaurant was definitely missing the traditional Disney-specific accents. Since the Rainforest Café isn’t a Disney specific restaurant, I guess I can’t really hold it against them. But, it still would have been nice to see some Jungle Book or Tarzan characters amidst the trees or something J Overall we were pretty happy with the experience and will definitely be keeping this restaurant on the short list for dining in the Animal Kingdom.

We love beginning a day at the parks with a character breakfast, and ‘Ohana is definitely one of our favorite destinations. On this day, we had a 8:25am breakfast reservation, but we arrived about 25 minutes early and anticipated quite a wait before being seated. We were pleasantly surprised that we were seated after only a 5-10 minute wait in the lobby, so already the meal was off to a great start! This is a closer look at our breakfast at 'Ohana.

Restaurant: ‘Ohana
Location: Polynesian Resort
Meal Type: Breakfast

Atmosphere

Located on the second floor inside of the Polynesian Resort, ‘Ohana is themed to fit in with the resort’s tropical atmosphere. Tiki idols, carved beams, and plants are located throughout the dining room and make it feel like you’ve been transported to an island paradise. If you are lucky enough to be seated by a window, you could also enjoy some magnificent views of the Seven Seas Lagoon and a glimpse of the Magic Kingdom. Even though the restaurant was packed with families, it did not seem very loud in comparison to most of the breakfast buffets we’ve visited.

‘Ohana is the Hawaiian word for “family”, and that’s just how you’ll be treated while you are there. The cast members definitely make you feel right at home while you are dining by referring to everyone as if they are relatives. Our server introduced himself as “Uncle” David, which the kids thought was incredibly entertaining because they do in fact have an Uncle David.

Food

The food at ‘Ohana is served “family style”. For anyone that is not familiar with this type of dining experience, it means that your server will bring large skillets of food directly to your table and then your family is able to make their individual plates from the assortment of food presented. Think of it as a buffet that is hot, fresh, and brought directly to you so that you never have to leave your seat! When your platters run low on food, the servers will bring a fresh batch of your favorite selections to replenish your table. This is a closer look at the assortment of food prepared for breakfast.

Breakfast Bread

A “cousin” will seat you at your table and start the meal off with a basket of “welcome bread”. This sweet, warm bread was a great way to start the meal!

Beverages

You’ll have a regular assortment of beverages available to choose from (such as coffee, juices, and milk), but ‘Ohana also serves a juice mix that they refer to as “Stitch Juice”. This drink blend consists of passion fruit, orange, guava juices (otherwise known as POG Juice). It’s definitely worth trying if you haven’t had it before. I’m normally a coffee drinker, but I’ll choose this juice over coffee any day!

Fresh Fruit

You’ll also be served a cold leaf platter containing a variety of fruit. Our mix included melons, cantaloupe, raspberries, and pineapple. Everything was nice and juicy, so a lot of this plate disappeared quickly.

Breakfast Platter

Very soon after the fruit and drinks arrived, Uncle David brought over a large skillet that contained all sorts of yummy goodness. The selection of breakfast items included: Scrambled Eggs, Pork Sausage Links, Smoked Bacon, Island-Style Potatoes, Stitch Waffles, Mickey Waffles, and Biscuits. In general we are not big breakfast-potato people, but these were pretty good. Everything else was hot and absolutely delicious!

Meeting the Characters

As you are eating, the characters will individually make their way around the restaurant to visit each table. Our children simply adore Stitch, so he was the absolute highlight of their day. As always, Disney states that the character line-up is subject to change, but we’ve consistently seen Lilo, Stitch, Mickey, and Pluto.

Live Event

In addition to meeting some of your favorite characters, there is also a live event that takes place. At some point during your meal, there should also be an opportunity to get up and join the characters in a conga line. There will be “relatives” distributing maracas to the conga line so that you can really “shake it” to the music as you parade around the restaurant!

Adding It Up

The restaurant prices vary slightly depending on the season, but here’s how everything broke down this trip with a Tables in Wonderland 20% discount card.

Overall Impression

The service was quick and friendly, the atmosphere was beautiful, and the food was fabulous! There’s nothing about this visit that did not live up to our hopes or expectations. As expected, we’ll definitely be going back!

Really good, thoughtful and well laid out reviews. Makes me look forward even more to our two planned ADR character meals (BOG Dinner, and Lunch at CRT). Here's to hoping for good seats.

Not sure how I missed it before now, but just finding your report and really enjoying your style and pics. Can't wait to check out your blog and read more,

Restaurant: Cape May Café
Location: Beach Club Resort
Meal Type: Breakfast

Atmosphere

The atmosphere at the Beach Club is one of the closest ways to have that New England feeling without actually leaving Florida. It’s hard not to feel completely at easy when you approach this beautiful building that looks like a deluxe, seaside retreat!

1 BeachClub.jpg

Cape May Café is located just off of the main lobby inside of the resort. The restaurant itself is decorated with pretty, pastel-colored umbrellas and croquette clubs on the walls, an umbrella patterned carpet, and other nautical touches throughout. Even the buffet station features an umbrella mosaic around the base. There is a mix of tables, booths, and banquettes with chairs for a variety of seating combinations. While the tables and booths are spaced nicely, the banquette tables are a little close to each other, which can make it feel like you are dining with your neighbors. Despite the fact that this is a buffet, the restaurant was very clean and the serving station was very tidy.

Food

The buffet is not very large, but it’s a still a decent size for the restaurant’s capacity. The restaurant didn’t seem crowded with people at any point during our meal, so we didn’t encounter any problems maneuvering around the food station. My only concern is that the area might be a little tight for guests in a wheelchair.

3 Buffet.jpg
There’s definitely an assortment of food items for diverse tastes. The cold food section of the buffet included a nice selection of fruit, such as Grapes, Pineapple, Cantaloupe, Watermelon, Oranges, and Grapefruit. This is also where you’ll find a fresh Spinach Salad and a surprisingly delicious Grain Fruit Salad. My children simply cannot pass up the Yogurt, and Cape May has a yummy House-Made Granola or, their favorite, fresh strawberries to top it with. There is also an area with an assortment of Kellogg's Cereal, Hard- boiled Eggs, Cottage Cheese, Apple Sauce, or Cheeses and meatsthat included sliced Salami, Capicola, and Salmon.

4 Food.jpg

Of course, you’ll also find some hot breakfast favorites such as Breakfast Potatoes, Pork Sausage Links, Bacon, and veggie infused or plain Scrambled Eggs. What’s a good breakfast buffet without an endless supply of bacon?

5 Food.jpg
But wait, there’s more! On the other side of the buffet, there was Breakfast Pizza, Chorizo, French Toast, and Glazed Ham. I will say that the breakfast pizza at Cape May is a LOT better than the breakfast pizza server at places like Crystal Palace and Hollywood & Vine, so don’t be afraid to give it a try! The French Toast was pretty disappointing though, as it seemed rather chewy.

6 Food.jpg

On this visit, they were also preparing crepes made-to-order. There was a variety of fillings available to choose from, but with the option of banana and Nutella, who needs anything else?! This crepe was so delicious it was tempting just to avoid the rest of the buffet and stick to crepes for breakfast.

6b Food Banana Nutella Crepe.jpg

There is also a section of the buffet that is dedicated to my favorite- fresh baked pastries! The selection includes: Cinnamon Rolls, Danish (Chocolate, Cherry, Apple, or Cheese), Muffins (Blueberry, Chocolate-chip, or Oatmeal), Croissants, Bagels, Breakfast Bread and English Muffins.

7 Food.jpg
I just love these little chocolate-chip muffins!

Meeting the Characters

At breakfast, you can also plan on seeing Minnie and a couple of her friends – typically Goofy and Donald- all dressed in beach attire. The best part about a character dining experience is that the characters visit your table for photos and autographs while you dine, and you get to avoid the long lines in the parks! On this particular trip, we had a wonderful meet and greet with Goofy who took some extra time to interact with the kids by acting “goofy” with their markers autograph books as he was signing.

Adding It Up

The Cape May Café accepts the Tables in Wonderland discount card, so we saved 20% on this meal. Here’s how it broke down.

10 AddingItUp.jpg

Overall Impression

The food was excellent, the atmosphere was enjoyable, and the characters were a lot of fun! This restaurant is not as mainstream as other breakfast buffets such as Chef Mickeys and the Crystal Palace, so we haven’t encountered issues obtaining reservations here and have always been seated on time or earlier. On this particular visit our reservation time was at 8:30, but we were seated immediately after arriving at 8:10. I am not sure if I’d enjoy making the commute to another park after breakfast here, but it’s definitely our hands-down favorite restaurant to start with before a day in Epcot.

1 Banner ABC Commissary.jpg

Whenever there’s a hot, rainy, or really cold day at the parks, it’s always nice to escape the weather in a dining venue with a lot of indoor seating. At Hollywood Studios, the ABC Commissary is one of those locations. It was a hot afternoon in Hollywood Studios and our kids had just muttered two words that called for a change of plans – “I’m hungry”. Well, of course they were hungry. Why wouldn’t they be hungry already when they spent most of breakfast playing instead of eating? Looking around at the nearby dining options, we decided to swing into the ABC Commissary to get them a quick bite to eat.

Restaurant: ABC Commissary
Location: Hollywood Studios
Meal Type: Lunch

Atmosphere
Aside from a few tables with umbrellas along the lane, the outside of the ABC Commissary doesn’t look very much like a restaurant. Once you enter the doors, however, it’s apparent that this is a bustling counter service restaurant.

The entry hallway feeds straight into a single, roped-off line with a cast member at the end of it who directs you to one of the shorter, double-sided cashier lines. That’s where you can place your order and then step forward to the delivery counter to watch the team of Cast Members sorting the food into trays for each order. On this day, there seemed to be a lot of confusion happening with orders, as Cast Members were filling tickets for food and then unable to locate the waiting customers. After what seemed like an unusually long wait, we finally received our food and headed off to find a seat.

2 Outside and counter.jpg

The dining room is done in an art-deco style and features pictures and props from popular ABC shows. There’s plenty of seating and lots of plants.

3a stock.jpg

Food
There’s a menu above the food counter that you can look at, or they have handheld ones to peruse. This is what was available.

3 Menu.jpg

It’s not a huge menu, but the choices range from a salad or burger to seafood and steak. Here’s a closer look at what we selected.

Kid’s Meal Chicken Nuggets
Both kids went with pretty straightforward choices and selected the chicken nuggets meal with a coke. They substituted fries in place of the carrot sticks and applesauce. The meal comes with four nuggets, but they are a large, meaty size for a kid’s meal. At about $6.50 each for meals that the kids actually ate, we were very pleased with this choice!

4 KM Chicken Nuggets.jpg

Angus Bacon Cheeseburger
My husband and I actually ate our breakfast, so neither of us were really hungry yet – but, we decided to get something to split. I wasn’t feeling adventurous enough to try the Asian salad, so we selected the burger instead. You can’t go wrong with a burger, right? Well, we were wrong. The picture looks slightly misleading, so it’s probably best to describe this in more detail. The patty lacked any sort of flavor and was exactly like a thin, dense, previously-frozen meat patty that was slightly difficult to chew. I didn’t go into the meal expecting a fabulous counter service burger, but it definitely should have been a bit better than this.

5 Angus Bacon Cheeseburger.jpg

Adding It Up
Even though this restaurant did not offer a Tables in Wonderland, Passholder, or DVC discount, the prices are still budget friendly. Here’s the breakdown for our meal.

6 Adding it Up.jpg

Overall Impression
The ABC Commissary is not a restaurant I’d visit specifically for theming, but the large size of the venue and ample seating make it an ideal spot to cool off from the heat or escape the rain and cold while eating. The menu isn’t huge, but the available options are definitely reasonably priced. Overall, we would visit the ABC Commissary again, we just won’t be ordering the burger.
