DCL carry-on alcohol policy changing Sept. 30 2015

LOL! As a parent you always try to imagine how you'll handle certain situations with your kids/teens. I always pictured my reaction to the totally hammered teenager a bit more on the angry side. In the moment I was just focused on getting him to a toilet and not disturb other guests at 1:30 am. You'd have thought me getting so little sleep that last night of the cruise I'd be fit to be tied. Nope. I was more afraid than anything. Remember that drunk teen who died on some other cruise line after Mom & Dad put him in bed? I can honestly say I've never seen even a puking drunk go thru some of what my son did. He was crying begging me to help him. I figured normal. But then he started saying he was freezing. His skin was icy cold to the touch. It wasn't really cold in our room. Then he started this super bad shaking which scared me enough to wake my husband to make sure we didn't need to take him to medical. He was breathing, upright, and sipping water so we felt that's about as okay as he was going to be. I never left his side. When that episode stopped he became way more coherent. I was able to get him to bed with a trash can next to him. We didn't hardly sleep keeping an eye on him. When we debarked the next morning he was still pretty pickled. No rest for that monster hangover day. Nope. We had to fly home. He had a rough day with zero pity from us. But, ya know, it surprised us we were never angry. Disappointed. We had quite the long conversation about it all. There have been consequences. Yep, at some point most everyone has the tequila lesson. I remember mine, too. Ugh!

I had my tequila lesson. Tequila is the devil for me. I can drink Vodka, Rum, gin whatever, but I can't drink tequila. Your son was an adult and legal drinking age in most countries. I think you handled it perfectly. If he was 15 or 16 then that's different anger would be totally appropriate.

I agree. I am slowing running out of things to tell my friends why they should try a Disney Cruise these days. 2 bathrooms only go so far. Well our DVC member cruise will beat the deadline so bringing my Black Barrel Jameson, lol.

Don't forget about the fancy lanyard you get if you sail more than once! That is a huge selling point and it is definitely worth booking a 2nd cruise to get one of those. :rotfl2:

Or you can order Castaway Club lanyards from eBay like I did, 2 for 4.99! They came with the ziploc closing clear pouch which is really why I wanted them! I couldn't find the zipper pouch attachment anywhere! We'll unless I wanted like 40 of them from Office Depot!

Will concierge stop providing a bottle of wine or sparkling wine to their pax as they may take it and drink it on the pool deck and cause a ruckus at 2 am after they have been turfed out of the club for being drunk?Probably not as concierge passengers are always polite, rule abiding, never share their "special" gifts, and never EVER obnoxious to the staff.

I know right? The bring your own alcohol convinced several of our family to come, and I still haven't broken the news to them for our first, and probably last Disney cruise in October. I know it will be a great cruise, but it is SO EXPENSIVE. At least we could justify it a little with the extra perks....that keep disappearing, lol

There is alot of chatter going on the Disney Cruise Line facebook page tonight as well. Some of it, much more "rude" than the convo we have going here. It is amazing to me how people want to bash the posts of others who are now worried about their alcohol budgets. Disagree? sure...but maybe lay off the personal attacks. It does not make you an alcoholic because you would rather spend $18 on an entire bottle of Smirnoff than on two watered down drinks, it makes you smart or frugal. If a mom wants to pre-purchase some souvenirs at the Disney outlet and bring them when the kiddies ask for something, is she a cheap, deceiver of children? Things changing last minute on people who had purchased a certain product, for a certain perceived value is the issue. It is really rather distasteful to see how adults bash each other over expressing a dislike of Disney's handling of the situation.

Your concierge vendetta aside ...

I get a free bottle of sparkling wine?

"Well, I'm absolutely outraged that Disney is prohibiting guests from bringing boots aboard in their carry-on bags! How is anybody supposed to put together a decent pirate night costume if they can't bring boots aboard???!!! Boots totally make the pirate, after all and...

.... what?

Ohhhhhhhhh...

Nevermind!"

OK, how about this - Their house, their rules. They chose Wine, Champagne, & Beer as the OK alcoholic drinks to be allowed to carry on.

And they're allowing you to restock in port, meaning that on all but the longest cruises, this still amounts to about a bottle of wine a day for adults.

Look, I'm in total agreement that DCL rolled out this change unfairly. I think that they should have picked a date a bit further out (like maybe Jan 1?) allowing anyone still in the fully refundable situation to cancel if this change is just too unpalatable for them.

It saddens me that people might be so dependent on alcohol to enjoy their cruise that they might completely cancel it due to being restricted.

I was just kicked off the Disney Cruising Facebook Group because I questioned one of the Admins who was deleting every negative post concerning the policy change and even told the users in the group to "Move on" and they would delete any other topics on the policy change . After my reply quickly got 6 likes, it was deleted (not surprised), but then followed by my removal from the group. I was tactful and polite, but apparently struck a nerve with the admin.

It saddens me that some people assume that just because someone wants to cancel their cruise because a valuable benefit has been abrogated that that person is "dependent" on alcohol.

They have thin skins. There are other "uncensored" groups dedicated to those who don't like the heavy handed admins over there.

I got a thread locked on CC because I brought up dolphin welfare on "swim with the dolphins" excursions. That one made me sick to my stomach thinking of the reasons they locked it.

Er, sorry, carry on.

Well for us this is just another reason we now need to look elsewhere. Although we have been sailing Disney almost exclusively for the last 13 +years, Our little family of adults has been feeling that disney values us less and less lately anyway! Very few non- connecting cabins on new ships (and almost all in worst area right next to noisy elevators/stairs.) We are NOT heavy drinkers, but do enjoy our tropical drinks on our balcony without having to pay disney for them (I do not drink wine or beer.) With this new change and the poorly designed adult areas on the new ships, we may be sadly saying goodbye to DCL . Will really miss the outstanding staff esp in the dining room and serenity bay on cast away cay, but the pricing, lack of truly dedicated adult areas (quiet cove is never really adult with kids walking through constantly-due to cabin placement- and the splash pool above!!- satellite falls often have parents with strollers and such who just "happen" to be there). Our little family of adults will have to find another line to sail... RCCL I guess here we come!
