Kentucky Clerk Kim Davis found in contempt, going to jail

/ I applaud her standing firm in her beliefs. I think it wrong for her to be arrested.

Even when people stand firm in their beliefs, they often suffer consequences. That's what civil disobedience is about. She is knowingly breaking the law in protest. There are consequences for that. Martin Luther King wasn't immune to them despite having righteousness on his side, so I'm not sure why Kim Davis should be immune to them. There is no scenario in which the law is going to come out on her side.

It's a sad day when you refuse to do the job the taxpayers pay you to do. Glad she's going to jail and I hope they can now fire or impeach her.

Agree. She will have to be impeached because she's an elected official.

She can have whatever beliefs she wants. The problem comes in when she tries to use those beliefs to break federal law. She wasn't arrested for her beliefs she was arrested for violating the law and subsequent court orders.

As others have said, if the duties of her job do not work with her personal religious convictions then she needs to leave and find a job that will fit with her beliefs better. It does not give her the right to impose her beliefs on others.

Here's an interesting analogy:

Think of it this way. Someone who objects to war due to his religious conscience has a right to be a conscientious objector and not serve in the military, even were there to be a draft. But he does not have the right to serve as a military officer, draw a paycheck from the military and then substitute his own personal views of when war is justified for that of the government. The same applies here.

If Davis believes the government’s definition of marriage is fundamentally immoral and contrary to her religious convictions, she should remove her self from the state’s machinery of marriage. That she has every right to do. What she does not have the right to do, however, is serve as a government official and fail to fulfill the obligations that come with that office.

Let's not drag religion into it. That would be against the rules and all that.
You can't have this discussion without mentioning religion. That is the only reason anyone knows her name.

She can believe whatever she wants, but when those beliefs stand in the way of performing her job duties, she needs to resign. She cannot be fired as an elected official.

Sad day in America to be arrested for religious beliefs,

SHe has been arrested because she has been found in contempt of court for NOT DOING HER JOB as an ELECTED OFFICIAL. She could have easily resigned when she found out that some parts of her job would violate her super highly held morals (marriage between ONE man and ONE woman except for her it's four men and one woman and different baby daddies and etc). She didn't. She is acting in direct violation of the laws of the United States of America and deserves to be jailed because she's in contempt.

I think you missed my intention but it's all good. :)

OK, what should happen? She's been ordered to issue marriage licenses and refuses to. The judge said he didn't want to fine her because he figured (probably correctly) that others would step up and give her money to pay the fine. I'm not sure what it would take to legally remove her from office. But, she refused a judges order. So what should her punishment be?

ETA: Apparently the judge is asking her workers if one of them will step up and be willing to issue the licenses. If not, they'll go to jail also.

Sad day in America to be arrested for religious beliefs,

Total misrepresentation of the facts. She has been arrested for not doing her job, but I am prepared for the onslaught of wailing and teeth gnashing that is about to follow. She is a farce of stupidity..married 4 times, divorced 3, got pregnant during her affair while she was married  yeah she's a freaking icon of moral values. sheesh

Apparently the punishment should be another failed marriage. Just as long as any of those pesky "people" go to some other county to get married.

I don't agree with this lady's actions and think she's full of BS, but I don't think jail is the answer. Impeach her or fine her, but let's not make the jail system anymore crowded than it already is. Without impeaching her, she's just going to do the same thing when she gets out.
