Boycotting the Oscars

:badpc:
I just don't get why white people are so offended that Jada, Spike, and other talents are wanting representation at the Oscars. There was a good number of racial minorities represented at the Globes, why not the Oscars? Again, there were so many great, critically acclaimed performances by actors of color that were snubbed. Mediocre performances by white actors were rewarded. That's why movie actors, critics, directors, etc were upset.

Empathy and having an open mind is free :) I want my children to grow up and be represented in all forms of media, like white children. I don't know if you had heard, but there was a scandal in the latest Adam Sandler movie that stereotyped Native Americans in a disgusting manner. This type of stereotyping happens A LOT in film.

I cannot speak for any other white person other than myself. Personally I don't see many movies so I really don't have a horse in this race. However, what is frustrating to me is that the general public (yes every group) that doesn't feel proper representation has a beef with someone else. Why can't any group look inward to see how they can change to better the situation. I'm not talking about protesting I'm talking about personal accountability which is lost today. I have had terrible circumstances in my life. Raped and then became pregnant by a minority (not black). I could have sat back and felt sorry for myself and said I am in a struggle nobody understands, whaaaa. Instead I decided how I could be a better person and example to young people.

You still have not answered my questions, are you Native American? Can whites not speak? How is that fair???

ETA: I'm out, you make my head hurt! Maybe this is why Sabeking usually doesn't participate in these kinds of discussions!! Lol!:badpc::moped:

Yes, I am Native American:)

And I am very sorry that happened to you, and that is very brave of you to share. However, I don't think it's a "look inward" kind of issue, The fact is, whites make up a a majority of the Academy. I think there definitely needs to be a balanced panel. I don't think asking for representation in cinema is a bad or negative idea.

If "looking inward" solved every problem facing minorities, there would be an equal playing field. Unfortunately, it's not realistic. I don't think white people should judge racial minorities for peacefully asking for representation. Everybody struggles differently and reacts to things differently. That's not a big thing to ask, and I think it's very easy to look over the importance of it when you yourself are represented everywhere.

I can't stop myself!! Lol! Every situation in this world is a "looking inward" situation. Sometimes it's about how you decide to react to things. Most times there is a better way. And you never answered the fair question. I swear I'm done.:D

So to the people who have to hear racist remarks shouted at them have to "look inward" in order for it all to go away? Doesn't make any sense.

If I don't have kids, should I give parenting advice? Same thing goes for white people who want to tell racial minorities how they should/shouldn't react to injustices facing their respective communities.

I have always thought Hollywood operates at a gag worthy level of hypocrisy.

Ignore the talent portion of things and look at the extraordinary level of power that sits in the 'entertainment industry.' Unlike our political system tv/movies are unchecked & the messages they send are immeasurable in influence. Ask your average human anywhere about what it is to be American & they define what they see on TV- the news tells the world who we are and what we think. The world thinks we are all vapid white morons who try to hurt everyone else (not true) religious people hate diversity (not true) and define so called minorities in equally unflattering light (yikes & not true). Anyone who thinks the entertainment industry isn't dominated by old rich white men isn't paying attention and since 50% of population is female how does anyone explain the gender issue in a industry that trumpts itself as moral police? It's not just actors, it's managers, agents, executives, the marketers who are stacked as male & white, just visit LA and you'll see for yourself the disparity. When it's such a big industry the minorities in the region live in the shadows & there is no denying who is shopping on Rodeo Drive- seeing is believing.

I think this boycott is a small but successful dig at a huge problem in our culture that both average whites & minorites share even though the entertainment industry likes to try and divide us, making it seem like we are worlds apart with different objectives. The difference now is Hollywood doesn't really have a good defense against the minorities who are standing up, they have an easier time with whites dismissing by us as being fringe. I'm not a minority but I am sooooo cheering them on!!!

I think the awards are just a way for rich white men to empower other rich white men & think it's time for it to change. Can't believe it took this long, they might just fall on their own sword and that would be fine by me ;)

Resident black guy here :-)

I did not read the whole thread so forgive me if I repeat things.

My thoughts:

Should someone get a nomination just because they are a person of color? Of course not.

Is it weird that the last 2 years no one of color has been nominated? Yes

Should people of color boycott the Oscars? No

Will I be watching the Oscars? As usual, No (I might watch Chris Rock's opening monologue because I think he is hilarious!)

And lastly, will Leo finally get his because it's about time!

I swear I'm done.:D

The Ignore feature on these new boards is WONDERFUL. :cloud9:

On the old boards, when you Ignored someone, you still got a message saying you are ignoring So & So, or something like that, and a space for their post would still be there. On these new boards, you click on the Poster's name, click Ignore, and !!!POOF!!! they and all their posts disappear. It's like they don't even EXIST!!! Even when people quote their posts, those quotes completely do NOT appear! It's really a wonderful feature now to not feed into that useless energy. :bored: :thumbsup2

There is a reason for that, people buy what they are selling.

If there is nothing else to chose from that's what happens, but look at the explosion from Netflix & Internet news from Gen-Xers. That wouldn't have happened if we weren't all sick of mainstream ick. I think there is a huge generational divide visible in the demographics

And have any of them stepped forward to say WHICH nominees should be replaced? If they are going to put themselves out there and say a minority should be included, then they should also put themselves out there and say which of the 5 current nominees should NOT have been included. OR come up with a better working solution.
I think Idris Elba should replace Bryan Cranston and Eddie Redmayne this year for sure. I haven't seen concussion yet so I can't say anything about Will Smith's performance.

I'm sorry, but I fail to see why that is the theater's problem. If someone can't afford to go, that's on them.

My son's 6th grade class has a trip to Epcot coming in March. If we couldn't swing the $75 for him to go, then he would have to stay home. That would be our problem, not Epcot's.

Um I didn't say it was the theater's fault. It was a point about the state of poverty in this country. If you'll see I said there are programs for lower income kids to go on more affordable field trips but many families don't even have the extra $10 or $20 to give their kids to go on those trips. I won't go any further less I break the political talk rules.

Thank you! I needed that information! I have been around since 2004 and it may be my first time using it. I wanted to reply again but really what is the point?!

Maybe the Oscars should just have a black host for the next "X" amount of years so it will be equal to how many years there was a white host. I guess that would be fair and all. Deserving of the job or not

A clip of Tracey Morgan was just on ET, from when he was on Jimmy Fallon. He'd be a funny host. Maybe if he's well enough next year, they will consider him. . . Of course, they could consider another minority. . .

I think Idris Elba should replace Bryan Cranston and Eddie red maybe this year for sure. I aren't seen concussion yet so I can't say Nything about Will Smoths performance.

I don't think Eddie Redmayne will win this year. His performance was too similar to last year's in terms of transforming his body & voice. It was like when Meryl Streep did all those roles, one after another, with foreign accents. As fabulous a talent as it is, and NOT something most people can do, the fact that she did it so much and so soon, one after another, actually worked against her.

So, yes, with all due respect to Eddie, that was perhaps a wasted slot.

Does age even matter? It's worrisome that you appear to care so much. I believe in Internet privacy :)

And I'm sorry you have experienced the above. But unless you are a person of color, you can't begin to understand the difference on how people of color are represented and treated in this country. If you did, you might understand why protesting is important. This isn't new. The entertainment industry benefits from minority viewers and entertainment, but they don't reward the talent for incredible performances.

And unless you're a white person, you can't possibly understand how infrequently the supposed advantages I'm allegedly born with actually pan out.

And yes, minorities who give outstanding performances are recognized. But, the fact that nobody can pin down one or two specific "outstanding" performances to recognize (as opposed to listing off ALL the "good" ones together) just tells me maybe none of these performances were actually "outstanding".

Idris Elba and Samuel L Jackson were OUTSTANDING. Straight Outta Compton, movie and soundtrack, were OUTSTANDING.

That's one person's opinion. And hey, I love Samuel L Jackson, but he basically plays the same character in every film. Hey, John Wayne had the kind of scene presence nobody could top. But, he also played the same part in every film. That's why most feel his ONE Oscar was kind of a gift.
