DCL202123.jpg "That’s right, Disney is again expanding its family cruise business with plans to build two new ships, each of them showcasing the immersive family entertainment, enchanting storytelling and unparalleled service that only Disney can deliver.

The company has entered into a memorandum of agreement with the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany. The schedule calls for the new ships to be completed in 2021 and 2023.

“We pride ourselves on the unforgettable vacation experiences we deliver to our guests each and every day, and the expansion of our Disney fleet will allow us to create even more magical memories for families at sea and in incredible cruise destinations around the world,” said Robert A. Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, The Walt Disney Company.

While design plans, ship names and itineraries are still in development, the Walt Disney Imagineering team is already dreaming up exciting new innovations that will be uniquely fun and distinctly Disney. Each new ship will be approximately 135,000 gross tons – slightly larger than the newest Disney Cruise Line ships, the Disney Dream and the Disney Fantasy – and each is currently planned to include about 1,250 guest staterooms."

This news has been said to be coming for a while now but was finally announced.
Yep! Spirit was wrong though. Everybody said smaller. Looking at the renders included in the post above is telling. This is going to be a distinct departure from Dream Class in multiple ways. Whoa, it's pretty cool stuff!

With a Cruise Ships this big, they can push the envelope even further.

I think with the Oasis in Port Canaveral they needed to go bigger to compete with it. Now what if they name one the Spirit...

Not really sure how much bigger (if at all) than the Dream and Fantasy they will be. Both of those are listed at 1,115 feet long, 125 feet beam, 1,250 staterooms and a tonnage of 128,000. The two announced ships have a higher tonnage (by 7,000) but have the same number of staterooms at 1,250. The new ships are stated to be "over 1,000 feet long and 200 feet high", so they may in fact be close to the same length.

Jumping up to 135,000 gross tonnage. It won't be meaningfully larger. However, it does show their ambition and besting their last cruise ship. Which is exciting.

Spirit said the two new ships would be named Spirit and Imagination so we will see.

Yeah, size wise I don't think it's that significant.

But, as an overall expansion of their "fleet" it's huge. If they're keeping everything else operating that's a huge increase in capacity.

I wasn't happy with the dream...so these will be Interesting to see from a design standpoint.

They can go ahead and skip the aquaduck

Disney is very happy with the Dream and Fantasy and customer ratings are extremely high. I bet these will be pretty similar with lots of fun changes. They are even being built at the same shipyard.

I am guessing the new ships will be headed to Port Canaveral to give DCL Castaway Club members Some NEW Ships to sail on. Could the older ships be headed to Asia or Europe permanently?

Great! More cruise ships that I can't afford to sail on! Whoo-hoo!

They are not a good value...no doubt. But they keep getting people to gush over them. Those people seem to come off to me as either:
A. Don't go on the modern ships of the other lines.
B. Think that Having Mickey Mouse all over the ship makes it a better cruise. Which honestly it doesn't.

They probably will go ahead with something new and unique to those two ships.

Honestly you're the only one who I have seen say they weren't fond of DCL.

You're on the disboards...

And honestly I can be a lot more objective sometimes.

Disney is better In some areas...but I wouldn't say overall against some of the things Royal Caribbean does. Service much better on celebrity or princess. Costa has a more Impressive international reach.

Disney doesn't have very good ports. They "go cheap" on those in many ways...running the short triangle between Florida and the Bahamas far too much.

And why? Because people don't Honestly criticize the name.

I myself have never been on a cruise. My uncle is an avid RCCL cruiser. I also have some friends that have done Disney Cruises. I haven't heard a bad review of either. The Disunplugged team travels often on both DCL and RCCL and say that DCL is first in their opinion with RCCL at a close second. I think the overwhelming thing people say is Disney is better for families than Royal but service is very close between the two. Disney is expensive to begin with and I see why they go to the Caribbean so much, because they have Castaway Cay there and its the cheapest option really. We have looked into a Disney Cruise but for a family of five its about double what it is to go to WDW for a week and stay at a moderate.

Yea, that's neat and all but I can't find the answers to the most pressing questions...

First, will I still be able to bring snacks aboard the ship or am I going to have to smuggle them in the super secret compartment of my luggage?

Next, will I still be able to fetch that 6th fastpass for special seating to the at-sea fireworks spectacular?

Don't give them any ideas.
