This is us..

The 'love of his his life' was his ex-wife Sophie whom he divorced 12 years ago. The same Sophie that he said he was in love with at the birthday party. At the end she texted him and wanted to get together.

Thanks! It was going crazy wondering if Olivia grew her awful blond hair out or was wearing a different wig. That's a great twist. It would have been seriously weak for Kevin to have had either Sloan or Olivia as Love of My life status, given what we've seen of their relationships. I'm glad it went in a completely different direction.

I don't find it to be minutiae at all. I appreciate when I watch a show like Downton Abbey or Mad Men and they care enough about us viewers to take the time to be historically accurate. Anything less is just sloppy writing.

I agree with you, for different types of shows. The past in this show is meant to focus on the characters, who they are, what they did, and how different things shaped them. IMO that's what the title is all about.

Their 10th birthday would have been in August 1990. Their 9th was August 1989.

Although I read the previously.TV This is Us forums and someone screen capped Randall's report card from an earlier episode and it listed his birthday as August 1981. So somewhere along the line mistakes have been made but you need to be pretty good at screen capping to catch them.

I think they have finally established the birthdays as August 1980 so going back to that, Vogue was a proper part of the timeline.

I will be the voice of dissent and say I like the horse guy. Not so much for himself, but I think it's good for Kate to feel like she's got options--that she's not just "settling" for Toby because he's the first guy who asked her. She needs to see herself as a confident woman who is worthy of being loved.

Agreed.

I agree with this but I do wish it could be handled in a bit more of a realistic fashion. Even when Kate met Toby, they barely exchanged a sentence before Toby's all aggressively into her and last night, horse guy might have even beaten Toby's record for being instantly into Kate. I'm not really clear why, except the writing feels incredibly rushed.

William was the best part of last night's episode. The rest was meh and didn't do a thing to further the stories. We knew Jack died, we knew about how old the kids were when he died, we knew Kate has serious issues with her weight, and we knew Kevin has been a selfish, shallow jerk his entire life.

This episode was by far the weakest.

I'm still not quite sure how old the kids were when he died. How do we know? Thanks.

The show's creator has said the kids were around 16/17 when Jack died. This was in an interview posted today online on various sites.

You're right. I just remembered seeing a date.

It's easy to get lost when you're simply watching the show for the character dynamics, which IMO is what this show is about. The Vogue incident happened & I decided to verify it myself on the spot, largely because I'm frustrated that so much of the discussion of the show centers on this type of detail when I feel like the show is truly meant to allow us a bird's eye view of how people become who they are through their experiences along the way of life, and that's why they've embraced the narrative style of the flashbacks and present day woven together.

I for one am not eager to have that detail nailed down any too firmly anytime soon. The reality is, once that decision has been set in stone for us it limits the potential for stories to be written with Jack in them.

We also know this from when Kevin crashed the funeral and told the mom that he was about her son's age when he lost his dad. Her son was 15.

I don't remember Kevin saying that. I do remember him saying 15 "was tough" and he too had lost his dad. Maybe I'm just stuck on the idea I don't want the 5 Pearsons split apart any time soon.

I'm not sure what his exact wording was, I'd have to go back and watch it again. I figured that is why he connected so much with her situation and got so emotional.

From what I've read in the interview, the new episodes will get a bit darker... it's going to be tough to watch I think.

Went back and watched Kate's drumming scene. Sophia IS on the note, in the bottom right corner. I paused in the TiVo app on Jack's program, screen shot it and zoomed in. No date, it's just a design.
I didn't see her name. I must have overlooked it due to all the other drawings on the note. Samantha's name was big at the bottom and in the same handwriting as the note. So I assume Samantha actually wrote the note. Maybe she added the other girls' names, or they added their own names?

You've never had a guy come on strong right out of the gate before? I've literally had a guy tell me I was going to marry him within seconds of meeting him. And some women just give off that vibe. My SIL (adopted out as a baby) had her brothers, uncles and my FIL (not her father) wrapped around her pinky finger in about 2.2 seconds. Three of the four best friends I've had in my life would have guys instantaneously going in for the kill within minutes of meeting them. Have witnessed these interactions I don't find it implausible at all.

Here's a screen shot.

I'm not convinced that horse guy is really into her. I get the vibe that he just takes advantage of vulnerable fat chicks (of which I am one, LOL!) for the nooky. He knows just what to say to send them to his cabin looking for validation, comfort, etc. Maybe I'll be wrong and he will show some redeeming qualities.

Maybe if she looked like a Victoria Secret model, but I'm guessing most severely obese women don't have every man they meet dropping at their feet.
