All You Need is Love: an offsite, non-Disney PTR (counting down to May 2018)

Woo hoo! My DD and are are totally stoked to try the cookie dough place! You have made us very happy this evening:flower1:

I only wish that carrots made me as happy as cookie dough :rotfl:.

Did you read their sizing page? It literally made me laugh out loud.....especially the size large (Awwwww, I need bigger pants!) :rotfl2:.

How many days now until Mexico?? It's gotta be getting REALLY close!
3 more days....we fly Sunday morning early. As of today I've finally got all my work caught up, with one very minor exception, and that will be finished tomorrow. I've left instructions up the wazoo at work for next week and I'm leaving tomorrow by 2pm. So really vacation time is only 16 hours and 12 minutes away.

I don't blame you one bit about the Disney reservations. The prices they charge for nice dinners there are, frankly, obscene. We haven't even been able to take our kids with us to Ohana because I didn't want to spend $250 plus tip on one stinking meal. Also, I am a cheapskate! If you keep Kobe in your plans, they probably have early bird specials for dinner if you are interested. Usually, those meals are 15 to $20 a piece.

What a shame about DC, but definitely something to put on your to do list.

I totally agree about the budget and you definitely don't miss out when eating offsite as you know. Disney restaurants are well overpriced and with the exchange rate on our last few visits even more so. :scared1:

Enjoy your weekend :goodvibes

I had not read the sizing section on their website, but I'm glad you pointed it out to me! Not only was it hilarious, I discovered that they sell cookie dough nachos. My daughter is probably going to have a heart attack with joy.

Totally agree on the Disney reservations and prices! It's gonna be really hard to go back to paying Disney prices without cast member discount, and the AP discount dropped as well. My oldest applied for summer alumni program but she hasn't heard anything yet-hasn't even heard about the next step which is web interview (she immediately advanced through the stages last time) so at this point I don't think it's looking good. Is it awful to say I'm more disappointed (she really doesn't care much either way) as it would have been nice to have cm discount in June lol! Also-her start date would be in May and I was hoping it would have overlapped with your trip...

Need to pin DH down on timeshare resort soon. Torn between returning to Marriot Cypress Harbour vs trying SVR...orMarriot Royal Palms where we'd have use of World center pools...

Ah the countdowns! We passed a landmark yesterday. We bought a litre (quart) of cream yesterday, and the expiry date on the carton is after our return. Can start making 30 day FP+ reservations next Saturday (I really need to figure out what our park days are going to be!) Five weeks from right now, I'll be heading back home from the office to pack the car. Plan is to have the car idling at the door of A+'s school when the bell rings at 3:15, and then keep that compass pointed South for the next 24 hours.

Aww, I'm sorry to hear that! Adulting can be really hard sometimes

Yesssss, Kobes! Luckily, my 8 week weight loss challenge will be finished by then, so I won't feel too gulity about going! So.much.food. good.food.
As of right now, I should be off on Friday and Saturday.

And yes, I would also be down for some cookies dough! I have no idea how I haven't been there yet.

Another point on dining.....and I know I'm in the minority here....but I really didn't think 4Rivers was anything to write home about. But I wouldn't discourage anyone from trying it and making their own opinions on it!

Let me be the first to wish you an AMAZING vacation!! Travel safe and soak up as much of the warmth and sunshine as you can. If you get time (and there's wifi available), be sure to drop in here to say hello and post a beach selfie or two :beach:.

Wait, @Gina-Gina-Bo-Bina, you still haven't gone to 4 Rivers?!?! Another reason you can't move to Orlando yet! LOL

Nope, we still haven't!! :guilty: I am so ashamed! We had hoped/planned to squeeze it in last October, but we were travelling with Steve's brother and sister-in-law and that was their first time at the Universal parks, so we ended up doing a lot more dining at Universal than what we normally would have.....which meant 4 Rivers took a back seat. But this time, we are COMMITTED to fitting it in! We've done Sonny's BBQ, and Bubbalou's, and Smokey Bones (not an official barbecue joint per se, but kind of close)....so 4 Rivers is the last major one we need to try.

I don't blame you one bit about the Disney reservations. The prices they charge for nice dinners there are, frankly, obscene. We haven't even been able to take our kids with us to Ohana because I didn't want to spend $250 plus tip on one stinking meal. Also, I am a cheapskate! That's a great price!! And Early Bird works well for us generally, as we tend to be twice a day eaters on vacation.....usually a big breakfast/brunch and then an early-ish dinner, skipping lunch completely except for maybe a lighter snack.

We cringe at the price for a couple, but the family cost of Disney dining is enough to make me faint :faint:. The last time we were at Crystal Palace, there was an extended group at the table beside us.....it looked like it was a Grandma and Grandpa with a couple of their children with their spouses and kids. Maybe around 10 of them all together. When it came time for the bill to be covered, he insisted on paying for everyone. I'm not sure he knew just how pricey the per person cost was of that buffet, because I thought he would PASS OUT when he looked at the total. When he grabbed his chest in mock heart attack, I was not so sure he wasn't actually suffering a real pain or two!!

What a shame about DC, but definitely something to put on your to do list.

I hope the DC evening experience is a real hit, and they extend it through to the fall. I will absolutely be watching to see if its something we can squeeze into our October trip!

I'm going to try and get Steve to take me there early in the trip, so if its REALLY good, we can squeeze in a second visit before the end of our vacation :teeth:. There's enough on their menu that's calling out my name that I'll need to go more than once!

Aw, I am sorry your DD is still waiting for news :sad2:. That can't be easy for her. I will keep my fingers crossed that she....and you!...gets some unexpected good news soon!!

I feel ya on the timeshare conundrum. It's so hard to try something new when you already have somewhere you love! Are they all roughly the same cost?

Five weeks! That's just a couple of heartbeats away ::yes::. You must be getting a little excited (or I sure hope you are!). Hopefully you won't run into any poor weather as you make the first part of your journey in snow territory.

How bad has Mother Nature treated the nation's capital this year, anyway? This time last year you were posting pics of your driveway that was masquerading as a snow tunnel .

Madeline would LOVE that cookie dough place. Might have to check that out sometime.

Remind me again, when are you guys planning on heading to Orlando next? Was this the year you have multiple trips scheduled?

Aww, I'm sorry to hear that! Adulting can be really hard sometimes

Don't be sorry, I am very okay with it :). We have some great restaurants planned, and several new ones at that. Which reminds me......a dining post is definitely in order soon!

If Kobes is as much food as you suggest it is, we may have to have TWO dining dates.....one for Kobes, and one for cookie dough. This girl can only handle so much gluttony in one night . I must remember to check Wonderland's hours to see how late they are open. And for the record, I'm quite disappointed in you, girl. A brand new restaurant devoted solely to cookie dough, and you haven't made a beeline for it yet? I'd have been there opening day if I lived as close to it as you do :rotfl2:.

We're headed to Orlando in 5 days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And yes we'll be going again in May (the week after you) and September.

I joined in and have been reading but it just did not feel right introducing myself right as you shared about the broke off engagement for your son. But I want to take the time now to say Hi, I am enjoying your thread. We are going to Orlando this May and that is what first brought you up. We are doing a Disney World this trip but really want to do a SW only trip and shop and eat next time. We love Disney and will go back at some point when SW land is open without having to a wait a week in a tent out front to get it. I am from Chicago, been married for 17 years and we are currently living on the island of Roatan off the coast of Honduras. We have 8 kids, 4 by birth and 4 long term permanent foster kids. Unfortunately they are not able to travel out of the country with us. Our trip is at the request of my mom. We were planning a big trip this year to spend time with her, she lives in Kansas, and we going to Silver Dollar city and fish and hang at the lake but she has never been to Disney World and requested we go, so we are! Anywho, looking forward to following along on your trip.

Please post pictures and reviews of Wonderland! We'll be there in June:cheer2:

I will absolutely do so! Those pics will also likely be on Facebook as well (sooner than here on the Dis.....I usually update FB first, the Dis sometime thereafter) so if you are on Facebook and haven't added me as a friend (and would like too), PM me for my last name. I generally update my Facebook pretty much everyday that we are in Orlando.

SO JEALOUS! :p Are you driving? Here in MI, we are apparently in for quite the snowy week :cold:. Hopefully you won't have too treacherous of a commute until you get far enough south that winter is no longer a factor.

Aw, never feel bad about jumping in.....even when my life is in one of those crazy moments. They tend to crop up regularly lately :rolleyes2 ... sometimes with crazy good things, other times with crazy not-so-good :rolleyes1. But, everything tends to work its way out eventually, and usually for the better. And when the going gets tough, its good to have you all here on the boards to keep my mind off the bad stuff!

What a HUGE move for you, from Chicago to the Honduras!! :worship: Oh, how I wish Steve had been transferred to somewhere equally as tropical rather than frosty Michigan . And may I say, you are quite a lady to open your home to 4 foster kids: there's a special place in heaven for folks like you, who selflessly give such love to children who so desperately need it. Bless your hearts. Thank you for your sacrifices!

I think you'll really enjoy the pace of a SeaWorld trip: in comparison to the hectic pace and super planning of a Disney vacation, Seaworld is amazingly relaxed and easy. It's also an incredible group of parks for kids: the educational value is simply superb, even though they may not realize just how much they're learning while they're there ;). And of course, it goes without saying that its WAY more affordable too! Another happy bonus! :thumbsup2

How awesome to be able to share the joys of your vacation with your mom. I know from personal experience how tough it is to be away from family. I hope your trip is simply perfect in every way! Looking forward to counting down with you to our travel dates in May! :hourglass

Ooo, I can't wait to see it!

Coming up soon! Stay tuned! :surfweb:

Dining

As we've been discussing over the last few days, we've decided that it would be prudent to re-evaluate our dining plans and focus on good value versus being really splurgy. Considering the scope of extra expenses we will be facing before our travel dates (the purchase of our new home, closing costs, legal fees, moving costs, fees for painting and other cosmetic updates, and the new furniture and other decor items that we will want to buy to finish the new spaces) it seems much more responsible to maximize our vacation dollars while (hopefully) not sacrificing quality.

We are also endeavoring to not dine at places that we can easily eat here at home. While many of the American chains used to be our Orlando go-to's (Olive Garden, Chili's, TGI Fridays, Steak & Shake, Longhorns, etc.), we can now enjoy those anytime as they are literally within a few miles of our front door here in SE Michigan.

We also don't really want to lock ourselves into any specific meals, so we can be flexible when needed and eat where and when we want. For the most part, our plans are just a rough guide, and will change a bit once we are actually on vacation. We often get to the point where we simply can't bear the thought of another big meal, and just want light snacks at the villa or informal vittles by the pool. That said, we have a few places we would like to squeeze in if we can. Here's the list:

Breakfasts
When on vacation, we tend to be twice a day eaters: a more substantial breakfast/brunch, then a nice dinner. Three big meals a day, especially if its hot, makes us feel sluggish and icky. So you'll generally not find us partaking in too many real lunches along the way.

Breakfast is provided at Discovery Cove, so we won't need a restaurant pick for that specific day of our vacation. We will take part in the all day dining on our SeaWorld days (so far I've pre-purchased one day of ADD for SW, and I figure the other day we'll just purchase at the park when we arrive), so breakfast on those days will be at the park. For the balance of our morning meals, we'll try and dine at least once at Sweet Tomatoes (an Orlando favorite), Golden Corral, and the Marketplace at the Vistana (their deli features Starbucks coffee and some really, really tasty breakfast sandwiches). Ponderosa is also a possibility, as is somewhere at Disney Springs (Wolfgang Puck Express, Earl of Sandwich, or maybe even the Poutine place). We enjoy the flexibility of being able to go with whatever we happen to feel like when we wake and greet the day.

Dinners
Two must-do's this trip will be 4 Rivers BBQ and, of course, Kobes with the lovely @chiamarie :). Both will be new experiences for us, and come highly recommended by many folks here on the boards. We always try to do at least one new thing on each trip, so these were perfect fits.

We don't land in Orlando on our arrival day until 5:45 pm, so we'll likely do Sweet Tomatoes for our arrival day dinner. While Sweet Tomatoes has been a favorite breakfast and lunch on previous trips, we've never done dinner before.....so this, too, will be a somewhat new experience. By the time we make it to Lake Buena Vista, we figure we'll be tired and hungry and ready to just dig into a good, healthy meal without a lengthy wait......then we can make the hop, skip and jump to the Vistana and check into our villa in enough time to get settled and enjoy a good soak in the hot tub. Our back up plan is just to check in to SVR and then have dinner at the Tacky Tiki Bar. It's always good to have options, just in case.

Manny's Chophouse (which would also be a new restaurant for us), Millers Ale House and Smokey Bones are also on our dining list for May. All are places we don't have here in Michigan. Steve would really like to squeeze in Manny's if possible, just to add yet another place to our long list of Places We've Tried While In Orlando.

The All Day Dining plan will cover our SeaWorld days (though they close at 6 pm during the week we are in Orlando, which means the restaurants will close between 5:30 and 6) and all of our food for the day is provided at Discovery Cove. We will pick up some groceries from Publix and just have some healthy but easy foods to enjoy at the villa after our customary pool time: cheese, crackers, sliced meats, fresh fruits, veggie trays, and those types of things. I can't imagine us wanting much more than that after long days of indulgence. We always have the option to order a late night pizza from the Tiki Bar if we decide we want something more substantial.

Snacks
The Wonderland Cookie Dough Co. is an absolute, I-refuse-to-go-home-until-we've-been-there must-do stop ::yes::. I'm generally willing to make concessions where necessary, but sometimes a girl has to stand her ground ;). It's going to be cookie dough or bust, baby  (or maybe cookie dough until I bust? :scratchin)

https://www.facebook.com/wonderlandcookiedough/

Twistee Treat is a favorite for ice cream, and we didn't make it there last trip. I'd love it if we could squeeze that in at some point.

And of course, there's Krispy Kreme . We have one here in SE Michigan (about half an hour from home), so its not an absolute "must do"......but its a long-time family favorite so I'm pretty sure you'll see us there at least once during the course of our vacation. Thank goodness calories don't count on holiday . And the ones that do will be negated by all the walking and swimming we do, right? :bitelip: RIGHT?!?!? :o

Of course, these are the plans now but a great Groupon, Livingsocial offer, or Travelzoo deal could have us switching things up between now and May. I never print our itinerary until a few days before departure just in case. As they say......"change is good!" :).

Great list! I absolutely love Kobe's and Ale House (and now I'm craving a zingers mountain melt)

I hope for not TOO much weather, but a little bit just makes the trip more exciting for us as we drive from winter into summer. Not so much reversing that on the way home though...

Last year our start was a bit tough with strong winds in northern New York, and then snow in PA. We ended up stopping early because of that.

Not as much snow here as usual. Was just outside cleaning up after a light dusting of 10cm (4") today:

(I really need to find a replacement for photobucket soon!)
