The ABCs of Another Steppe Into Adventure!- Last Africa Ch. + World Showcase Pt. 2

Unlike the rest of us who tend to be short a few thousand bucks in our bank accounts every trip.
I think the reason Mark said he got off easy is because it's normally an arm AND a leg.

That they do. And if not that gold.
Problem is gold has been so overinflated the last several years. When it's higher than platinum (and platinum is much more rare), that's lop sided.

I think the reason Mark said he got off easy is because it's normally an arm AND a leg.

Ah! And then certainly much easier off than the bodiless heads. Or you or I when we go.

I would agree. Not sure that silver isn't the way to go right now. Er, at least I'm hoping so.

I've found wondering around Disney with only one arm and leg to be a bit problematic. I need to get pointers from Tate...he seems to manage just fine.

Considering I have gone that route, me too.

Well, if you can find someone to carry you around in a bag on occasion.

:rolleyes1

Considering I have gone that route, me too.

I wish us both "luck"! We made some major moves lately given the volatility elsewhere. Hope we don't lose our shirts.

D is for: Dancing Queen

After going to bed at 7:00 the night before, already feeling a bit rotten, I woke up at 8:00 feeling… worse. Rested, but worse in terms of the crud that was attacking us one by one. I was number 3 to get it. The cold bucket bath felt very nice, as did the hair washing. What normally takes 30 minutes here in Oregon, here, in SL, it would take hours to dry. But I did feel somewhat refreshed and, as breakfast wasn’t ready yet, I decided to catch up on some journaling. I loved sitting out on the veranda just taking in the sights and sounds and spending some time all by myself. It was cooler out there and I had room to think.
I think I said this before...being sick stinks. Being sick and not at home is horrible.

Looks like LQ (Lounging Queen) or RQ (Relaxing Queen) to me. Strange looking dance otherwise.

I'm not a photographer, but I can appreciate good pictures when I see them.

I heard some activity outside on the back patio and made my way out there to see what I could see. Since the kitchen in the house wasn’t finished yet, all of the cooking was done outside on propane burners. Not a bad idea, actually. It keeps the greasy smells out, the whole house cleaner, and keeps the house from heating up more as well.
I noticed the same thing when on a mission trip to Jamaica. We were there in the "winter" and it was still hot. All the cooking was done on the covered patio area.

Today’s morning fare would be a nice treat, something different than the fried eggs and lunchmeat- fried fish, potatoes, and plantains. It was an interesting breakfast; the discussion flowed freely and was quite enlightening. The topic revolved mostly around human rights, human dignity, self-empowerment, and how the poor of Sierra Leone could lift themselves out of such a dire situation, given their government's poor leadership that, at its core, is greedy and abusive. It was also during breakfast that I learned that our African leaders who’d traveled with us had been at the port authority offices and docks until 2:00 AM to get our shipment out of customs. Perhaps it was this situation that led to the discussion of the abuses of power so rampant throughout Africa. They paid no less than $2,000 in “fees” (read bribes) to get them to release our goods of medications, donated clothing, medical supplies, and items for the NGO hotel. Ridiculous and infuriating!
Yes, something different!!!!
Oh carp, it's fish!
That's one thing that really irks me...I realize our customs can be inconvenient and cumbersome at time and I'm sure there is some degree of corruption and bribery as well, but $2000 just to get it released? :sad2:

My host asked a neighbor young man to escort me on my walk for security and to be a “culture broker” in Missions Speak. This would also be my first opportunity, short as it might be, to get some better than average photos.

I grabbed the Canon and a fresh SD card and we set out along the dusty paths to see what we could.
Better than average? Don't sell yourself short.

I saw a LOT of unfinished homes. If the owner is not physically present, construction must stop as the workers cannot be trusted to do anything quality without direct oversight. Also, many construction projects happen in phases as the owner is able to pay.
Sad they can't be trusted to do it right without supervision
Isn't there a story in the Bible about not starting construction until you can finish? ;)

The people of the neighborhood found me as interesting as I did them, and more than one person asked me to take their photo.
Hmmm...asking you to take their picture. Unless they could see the picture, that seems a bit odd.

The majority of potable water is packaged in soft, thin pouches of plastic rather than bottles. The quality is somewhat suspect as they come from mostly mom and pop filtering businesses with little to no oversight or regulation. No thanks.
Ummm, I'll pass...not thirsty.

There weren’t many family gardens, but here is an example of a tidy little garden plot. Typically, one would find okra, eggplant, cassava, beans, some fruit trees, corn, and sugar cane.
Looks very similar to Jamaica...the shack and the tiny garden next to it.

After we helped by putting the chair covers and table cloths on, which took a couple of hours, we returned home (through the traffic which I’ve already described in detail) to get showered and dressed. By the time we returned to the hall it was dark. When we arrived, there were already about 20-30 guests. LOUD music was blaring, as it was everywhere. All the time.
That's something I have little patience for no matter whether it's here in the states or otherwise. If i wanted to listen to YOUR music, I'd be playing YOUR music myself.

One highlight was the boys our team brought from the one of the villages we’d be going to a few days later. The profound level of poverty is difficult for those of us in the West to even comprehend. None of those boys had EVER worn a pair of shoes. Not once. Ever. I will share more about their lives in the village in future updates.
Sad, but also not surprising. As I've said, we take so much for granted here. Another good example is water. We go to our faucet (or fridge for filtered) and get water and don't have to consider whether it's safe to drink or riddled with bacteria. When in Mexico, it was so hard to remember you couldn't even rinse your mouth from the faucet after brushing your teeth.

Later that night, the organizer thanked me for my bid which was $50 more than I had intended to “bid”. Uhhh, no. Clearly, they did not understand the concept of what I was doing, and my attempts at increasing the winning bid was totally lost on them. I told them they needed to find the person who bid just before me and collect that, and I would pay a matching amount. Luckily, they did, and I was happy to pay for part of the most expensive dollhouse on the planet… that I would never see again. Too bad, because it was a really cool dollhouse made of dozens of carefully handcut wooden pieces. I thought it was pretty cool, given that a 12-year old, poor child made it out of love for his family.

Cool house. I wonder how long that took. Hope the price (and your generous matching) helped he and his family quite a bit. Pretty impressive for a 12 year old. I think it would be cool to buy simply to support the kid and his family.

Dinner was finally served around 9:00. It was very good: chicken gizzard skewers, fried rice, cabbage salad, grilled chicken, and canned sodas. Not sure I’d ever had a gizzard, but they were passable. Not something I’d seek out or order given a choice, but certainly not bad either. Like, you know, raw oysters.

No, I don't know raw oysters nor will I ever unless someone forces me. Like Mark said, snotty rock...umm, no!

If you know me at all, I’m not ashamed to post the most embarrassing of photos of myself here. I have no problem laughing at myself- here’s proof of that too. Sue me. I was having a LOT of fun with my new African friends and when we danced until we could boogie no more, we began the exhausting process of cleaning up.

I'm not seeing dancing evidence...just you pointing at someone else who might be dancing.

When we finally reached home it was nearly 2:00 AM and we fell straight into bed too exhausted to do anything but fall asleep. We weren't the only ones tired from a long day.
Aww, come on...you do EMH at Disney, why should EEH be much different?

While I removed many of the photos simply to save space, you do have a good eye and take really good photos!

I didn't take the time to do any quoting because I'm behind in my studying today, but I just wanted to chime in that I'm still really enjoying hearing about your SL stories. You're telling it in a way that, accompanied by your photos, really helps me to feel like I'm getting to view your experience straight through your eyes.

I think I said this before...being sick stinks. Being sick and not at home is horrible.

Yes, away from help, comforts, etc... is tough!

Looks like LQ (Lounging Queen) or RQ (Relaxing Queen) to me. Strange looking dance otherwise.

Hey, I've been called a lot of things in my day.

I'm not a photographer, but I can appreciate good pictures when I see them.

Thanks! That one is a favorite from the trip.

I noticed the same thing when on a mission trip to Jamaica. We were there in the "winter" and it was still hot. All the cooking was done on the covered patio area.

True tropics I think are very hard for the uninitiated to get used to.

Yes, something different!!!!

It's so sad that none of that will ever see any of those who truly need it.

Sad they can't be trusted to do it right without supervision
Isn't there a story in the Bible about not starting construction until you can finish? ;)

It is sad. I guess integrity is a dying character skillset. I'd have to look that up... ;)

Hmmm...asking you to take their picture. Unless they could see the picture, that seems a bit odd.

I thought it odd too, but it happened a lot. They, who do have phones take the obsession with selfies to dizzying extremes.

Ummm, I'll pass...not thirsty.

We stuck with bottles even though they cost our hosts more.

Looks very similar to Jamaica...the shack and the tiny garden next to it.

Pretty universal in many areas. We saw that everywhere all over Central Asia.

That's something I have little patience for no matter whether it's here in the states or otherwise. If i wanted to listen to YOUR music, I'd be playing YOUR music myself.

Agreed!!!!! So freaking rude.

Sad, but also not surprising. As I've said, we take so much for granted here. Another good example is water. Or affordable fresh fruits and veggies in a huge variety.

Cool house. I wonder how long that took. Hope the price (and your generous matching) helped he and his family quite a bit. Pretty impressive for a 12 year old. I think it would be cool to buy simply to support the kid and his family.

I didn't ask, but was super impressed. If I ever go back, I'd like to see if he could make me something small enough to tote home.

No, I don't know raw oysters nor will I ever unless someone forces me. Like Mark said, snotty rock...umm, no!

To each his own; I'll stick with something less slimy.

I'm not seeing dancing evidence...just you pointing at someone else who might be dancing.

I couldn't selfie when in beast mode. ;)

Aww, come on...you do EMH at Disney, why should EEH be much different?

Admittedly, I couldn't go the distance on my last few trips to 2:00AM. My carriage started to change at midnight and I had to leave the ball.

Wow, so much to take in. Too bad you weren't feeling top notch, but good for you that you kept on going. Wonderful that you can still see the beauty in the midst of such heartbreak, and to keep your purpose alive and strong.

The hard work and "more exotic" is coming up very soon. There was no choice but to keep on keepin' on. The schedule was packed and we'd come to do a job. :)

How are you classes and studies going? Keeping your head above water and feeling okay with it all?

Glad you're still here, Meghan! And I hope that you do really feel like you're there. I took very careful notes so I could share accurately the events anyway.

Thanks, Liesa! Things are mostly going well. I'm in a really heavy part of the semester right now, in the middle of two weeks that have been fondly dubbed H*ll Weeks #1 & #2. We are coming up on our reading week break (when I'm headed to WDW!) and most of our midterms and assignments fall in these two weeks. My anxiety and mental health have suffered a bit, but I'm trying to be proactive and keep everything in check. My Hearing Disorders class is kicking my butt, and I write that midterm today. Who knew there were so many reasons your ear drum could explode with pus!? I do not envy anyone—like you!—who has studied nursing, or any other medical field. The material is super heavy and hard to memorize! But it's also very interesting, and I'm finding my curiosity is winning out over the stress a lot of the time, which is nice. :goodvibes Thanks for checking in!

You and Tate had quite the adventure at DHS. I can't wait for Toy Story and Star Wars to open...DHS is a little slow right now.

Quite the day in SL. Sorry you had the crud.

Jill in CO

Better than Stitch waking me up.

Are you sure about that??

Too true. EEK! I've seen more kids take a tumble than Disney dump shops.

Holy crap! That's a lot of kids!

While not good old home cookin' that will stick with you all day (and more) it is less but, IMHO better food. Plus, more for a quiet, take-a-break-from-the-park, place than a let's-have-more-entertainment kinda place. If that makes sense. I need to those breaks from the noise and stimulus here and there.

I'm all for better food from time to time as well. I do enjoy the wait staff's antics too. Really enjoyed it when I was there last solo. Quite possibly one of the best waiters I've ever had.

But get your need for a bit of a "senses" break. :)

What? Tatey can't sit quietly on a bench with his little hush puppy nibbling on an ice cream cone. ;)

 "hush puppy" now.

Well, okay. Confession time. I hope this doesn't ruin the story line for you... but, no. I had to come up with a ridiculous line to explain the fact that I left his arm unintentionally on my closet floor. It must have fallen out in my packing. It does not however change the fact, that body parts could indeed be purchased with the equivalent of a Disney park hopper. ;)

Doesn't ruin it one bit. Clever way to use the loss. ::yes::

WHA........?! Tatey has feelings!!

What's that? You're feeling that he tastes great?

LOL!!! Mickey can't even flip the bird if he wanted. With 4 fingers and all. ;)

Why not? I have 4 fingers and I don't have a problem.

I bought some a couple years ago and, while I didn't use it this year, I did last, and it was lovely. Very elegant when used in moderation.

I didn't even know you could still buy it!

Like I said to Mark (?) before. Its like if you have guests over. If your house is dirty, everyone will notice. If it's clean, no one will.

Yup.
"You mean your house isn't always like this?"

:lmao:

I was stunned. The entire display was gone! I'm glad I bought all I could on past trips. They had a fill up a box for $20 deal that was phenonenal. Tate could get practically a brand new wardrobe every time. He has all kinds of Star Wars stuff, Pirate stuff, Classic Disney stuff, you name it!

Huh. Very surprising that there's nothing left.

But... you have that much stuff????

:faint:

A HUGE reusable grocery bag of accessories and outfits. Ummm, he's a man of a great wardrobe!!!!

And again.... :faint:

Dude, it's barely in theaters anymore. If I spilled something, tough. And, as Mark pointed out up there ^, it's not like it's a very original plot theme.

It's totally original! Except for the parts that weren't, I mean.

It’s sometjing I’ve never done because I doubt I will ever buy in. But the FiPs are rather attractive! As is $100. Maybe someday.

Cash is cash.
But then again.... considering I'm not there for very long usually, I don't want to throw away a few hours doing that.

Not a huge ice cream fan. But enjoy a cone about once a year.

Once a year?!?!?!?
Sheesh. You sound like Ruby.

Guess we won't have our next DISmeet at Beaches & Cream.

Now I’m curious. I did to, but didn’t go down that rabbit trail this time. Will though.

I took a look for, oh.... maybe 5-10 minutes and didn't find anything.

By way of stairs I presume.

Kay actually did that once.

Well yeah! Wouldn’t you?!.

Nah. I know how it ends.

Yep. Many of them. There were several lights along the walls.

Cool!

There she is!! Have you seen Double Indemnity? She is one scary character!

No I haven't. Wish I had. Maybe I'll see it pop up some day.

One of these days I’d love to find a tableside guac place.

I'll let you have that one.

Def the real deal! And I’m going to submit it Tom the official website too.

Huh! Have you?

I’m really loving this Instant Pot!! So many good meals and so easy!

Glad you're liking it!

I wouldn't have the foggiest clue where to get them here in town! :confused3:confused3

From a can. Probably mis-placed in the canned seafood aisle.

After going to bed at 7:00 the night before, already feeling a bit rotten, I woke up at 8:00 feeling… worse.

13 hours! Whoa.... you must really have been tired and/or jet lagged.

I was number 3 to get it.

Better than being number two.

The cold bucket bath felt very nice,

Said no one, ever.

here, in SL, it would take hours to dry.

They don't have towels in Freetown?

Well, you certainly look cozy! :)
But tights? Socks?
I thought you had eschewed those after the first day?

Across from me there was a man in his t-shirt who appeared to be getting ready for his day, towel draped over his shoulder.

Good grief! I hope you averted your eyes from your pantsless neighbor! :faint:

a local fruit they called “apples” but were not what we know as an apple.

Ever find out what they were?

A little beauty amongst the squalor.

The waterfall, so lovely the day before, was waning with no fresh water to replenish it. I captured it's contrast, noting the sad build up of new trash that marred its former beauty.

Hmm... I suppose it's trash that was near the dry riverbed that got washed downstream when the rains came.
Too bad, though. Marring and jarring.

I wondered every time I descended that staircase if it’d be my last day on earth, or if my body would be left in Africa should it be. It was devoid of handrails, at times slick with unseen sloshed water, and generally treacherous being made of marble tile.

Holy crap!!! Talk about taking your life into your hands! Death trap in waiting!

Surprised you didn't take the stairs like this:
giphy.gif

Beautiful ladies with beautiful smiles. :goodvibes

That looks good!
And... is that @Captain_Oblivious running in the opposite direction?

I love that shot. Just... I dunno... very different from anything you're likely to see here?

Gotcha!!

the discussion flowed freely and was quite enlightening. The topic revolved mostly around human rights, human dignity, self-empowerment, and how the poor of Sierra Leone could lift themselves out of such a dire situation, given their government's poor leadership that, at its core, is greedy and abusive.

Whoa! Pretty heavy breakfast conversation!
Ours usually revolve around "Pass the jam."

They paid no less than $2,000 in “fees” (read bribes) to get them to release our goods of medications, donated clothing, medical supplies, and items for the NGO hotel. Ridiculous and infuriating!

:sad2:
"We're trying to help you people, stupid!"

She looks like she fits right in! :)

My host asked a neighbor young man to escort me on my walk for security and to be a “culture broker” in Missions Speak.

Culture broker? As in making sure you don't break or misinterpret cultural rules?

This would also be my first opportunity, short as it might be, to get some better than average photos.

You've already gotten some interesting and excellent ones.

I saw a LOT of unfinished homes. If the owner is not physically present, construction must stop as the workers cannot be trusted to do anything quality without direct oversight.

I get that. When my home was built, I was here every single day. Sometimes more than once.
I caught a few errors, made changes and answered questions. Saved us a ton of headaches/regrets later on.

Also, many construction projects happen in phases as the owner is able to pay.

Makes sense. That's how it works here, too. Sort of. The bank releases the money in stages as the home is built. Foundation. Framing... being some of the steps.

The people of the neighborhood found me as interesting as I did them, and more than one person asked me to take their photo.

Cool! I love that!

Look at the colours! Love this! :)

The majority of potable water is packaged in soft, thin pouches of plastic rather than bottles. The quality is somewhat suspect as they come from mostly mom and pop filtering businesses with little to no oversight or regulation. No thanks.

Oh, no. It's perfectly fine. You just have to filter it and boil it and you're good.

There weren’t many family gardens, but here is an example of a tidy little garden plot. Typically, one would find okra, eggplant, cassava, beans, some fruit trees, corn, and sugar cane.

I would've walked right past that and not thought anything other than it was just wild plants growing there.

I was fascinated by the banana flowers I came across. Such an oddity to me.

Really? We have them up here.

When I passed this sign, I was positively intrigued. I asked a lot of questions about the “chief” and what his role is. It is my understanding that the chief is in charge of a neighborhood and settles neighborhood-sized matters like land disputes, small disagreements and, as the sign indicates, family matters. He also decides if an issue should be directed to the next higher level of authority. Each village that we went to also had a chief. I suppose it is something like a mayor but with more direct involvement over civil matters.

That is really cool! Must go back to tribal politics, no? I really don't know of course. But very interesting!

My obsession with the lizards was evident wherever I went.

 So it seems!

When I returned home, soaking wet

that humid! whoa.

We were told to bring a formal gown to wear

Ugh... I can't imagine wearing a suit in that weather.

I was really pretty impressed with how they took very little and turned a very plain hall into a festive, cheerful atmosphere.

They did a terrific job! Place looks completely transformed!

After we helped by putting the chair covers and table cloths on, which took a couple of hours, we returned home (through the traffic which I’ve already described in detail) to get showered and dressed. By the time we returned to the hall it was dark.

Late start. Long day.

LOUD music was blaring, as it was everywhere. All the time.

What????

Our Emcee was a quite famous actress and philanthropist from Sierra Leone named Henrietta Mbawa (yes, she's FB or Google-able). She was an absolutely stunning woman inside and out. Such a pleasure to meet her.

Nice that you got to meet her. Hoping the rumours weren't true or better yet, proven not to be.

None of those boys had EVER worn a pair of shoes. Not once. Ever.

Wow. You're right. I can't even imagine.

One of those boys, in an attempt to bring in an income for his family made a dollhouse. The team saw this on one of their visits and asked him to come with his dollhouse and sell it at the auction. This is where an interesting thing happened. It was a bidding auction and the house started at, I dunno, something like $25. It quickly went up from there, and when it reached a number, I got an idea. What if I chimed in and gave a highest bidder matching bid (I'm sure there is a word for that, but I don't know it.). Whatever the highest bidder paid, I would match dollar for dollar. When it finally topped out, I had my number.

Later that night, the organizer thanked me for my bid which was $50 more than I had intended to “bid”. Uhhh, no.

Wonderful that you did that.
And I like that it went to a worthy cause.
But.... Must admit that when I first read that, it almost sounded like you were saying that you weren't going to pay what you promised.

I told them they needed to find the person who bid just before me and collect that, and I would pay a matching amount. Luckily, they did, and I was happy to pay for part of the most expensive dollhouse on the planet… that I would never see again.

::yes:: Doubling the amount is better than the amount + $50.

Cute little house.
Not bad at all for a 12 year old... who had to scrounge for parts. Not run to the store to buy a pre-made kit.

Dinner was finally served around 9:00. It was very good: chicken gizzard skewers, fried rice, cabbage salad, grilled chicken, and canned sodas.

Little late... but certainly sounds good!

Not sure I’d ever had a gizzard,

I have. Quite a few times. Used to have it whenever Mom would cook a turkey.

Not something I’d seek out or order given a choice, but certainly not bad either. Like, you know, raw oysters.

:lmao:

the main program ended about 10:30.

Not too late.... until I saw what time you actually got home... after you said you were sick...

I noted that everyone but family of the CEO or other staff left, leaving the rest of us to dance.

Too bad. Any idea why?

I can neither confirm not deny that I won the informal dance competition. I busted out my best African dance moves.

 I just bet you did!

You may be asking yourself just exactly how I knew any African dance moves at all, but I assure you I DID have practice before going. Twice. I even have photographic proof. But I’m saving it for another time.

Twice? I thought maybe once at the airport... Hmm....
Standing by!

If you know me at all, I’m not ashamed to post the most embarrassing of photos of myself here.

I do know. I have seen a few interesting photos!

I have no problem laughing at myself

Good for you! That shows a fair bit of strength of character, actually.

Sue me. I was having a LOT of fun with my new African friends

It shows! And you look adorbs, by the way! You go, girl! Boogie, Liesa!

When we finally reached home it was nearly 2:00 AM and we fell straight into bed too exhausted to do anything but fall asleep.

I bet! Plus, being sick.... I'm surprised you even made it home without falling asleep.

awwwww....

Yay! I'm caught up! I love all of the photos of your beautiful African friends! Such joy on the faces of people with such struggles puts me to shame. Boy, you really put in a long day. Set up, distinguished guests, then tear down. I hope you were able to sleep in the next morning. What is going on with Abu? Any news?

I noticed your shoes in the journaling pic - what brand are they? Are they good for walking? I'm looking for some like that in a Summer weight that would be supportive and comfy. I have some leather Clark's in that style that I love, but too thick for Summer. I have a hard time with my feet - bunions, flat feet and pronation going on. Not a good combo. :crutches:I need to get my footwear in order for my trip.

OK Still on the meds, so limited comments. Sorry you were feeling icky, but glad you were up enough to dance. Nice pictures with the natives, and that they were eager to take part. The hired folks did a nice job in fixing up your tent for the event! It looks like it was very nice.

Yes, these Norco 10s are quite the thing. I have taken them sparingly in the past when I have severe trauma, but this is the most ongoing time I've used them. I'm trying to stay ahead of the pain and between the pills and a topical thing that can be applied 4x daily, I'm keeping myself from excruciating pain. I don't know what folks with only ibuprofen would be doing!

Momma, your dance moves may be superior on the Disco front, but yo baby, I danced mo' betta!! Seriously though, Lizzy said Ahmed won.

Also, I was playing a very intense game of futbol (футбол) with those boys on an iPad in that picture.

And, as a side note, I'm beginning to think that this Tater character is highly suspect. I mean, he looks like a turd.

They HAD to say that. He’s their boss. :rolleyes2 He didn’t even dance hardly.

Tate is sad. You should come over and apologize and give him a hug. You’re kids are are going to have loads of fun with Tatey, btw.

I’m alive. Promise. Barely, but alive.

Put in 20 hours over 2 days, but...

We’ve done it! After 20 hours of hard labor of more than 60? 75? people over 2 days we’re ready to safely have surgical procedures and recoveries at Northbank’s new facility!!

Here’s to the Northbank Family! (Copied from my FB page.)

Excited to recover our first patients at 9:00 tomorrow!!

Sorry, no photos of our 7 ORs.

I’m alive.

Not sure what else to say, except WOW!

A lot of work, but tomorrow should be rewarding.
