Debt Dumpers - 2018

In regards to basements, we finished ours last year. About 1600 sq ft and we put in a bedroom, office, bathroom, storage room, and the rest one large space. No bar or anything fancy. Our total was around $32K, to give some perspective. We saved a little because my dad had been a well respected contractor prior to retirement and still gets discounts from local places, and he also acted as our general contractor and scheduled and organized everything so I’m sure we saved there too, but $80K just sounds ridiculous compared to what we spent.

It does sound crazy, but our area is so insane. Housing prices are just off the wall. We live 13 miles from work, in a different school district. If you took our house and moved it a few miles closer in the other school district, the price would jump by over $300k easily. And they are building houses like crazy, which means there is a lot of demand and not enough contractors to do the work.

I had planned to act as general contractor to save money, but it has been impossibly hard to get people to even call back, let alone get them to the house and give me a quote. It has been too much of a time sink, with very little to show for it. With basic materials and quotes for labor, even with us doing many of the things ourselves (painting, trim, dad doing electrical), I was well over $45k. I am at my wits ends at this point. I had been hoping to have this all finished before winter, but now it is looking like mid-winter at the earliest. I just want to see how we can work with the general contractor to get this finished.

Yes, I'm sure geography is a big part of it. Small rural town here and plenty of construction companies so even if my dad couldn't help, I don't think I would have had any issues getting the work done. Best of luck to you - I hope you get it sorted. Our basement is one of the best decisions we made.

I've been doing some reading online about SWA. So, it seems the flights are not truly sold out, but that they want to get seats filled at Anytime fare and then open up more Wanna Get Away fares to fill seats as needed on popular flights. I'm sure there are many reasons the flights show as sold out right when they just opened up the schedule, so this sounds like a possibility. Would love to know the reasons from someone in the airline industry, lol. Oh well, though, tickets booked anyway, hotel reservations made! I'm funding the vacation fund each month to have the price of the hotel paid by then but my price is $1178 for 8 nights so not bad and have until spring break to pay it.

Also, Christmas is a little over two months away. Seemed terrible at the time in January to start putting money aside for Christmas right when one ended, but now I'm glad I started that savings right away at the beginning of the year and will do it again next year. Even if it's $50, $75 some months I still keep it going so Christmas doesn't look so overwhelming to me. I don't shop early, I'll start looking right after Thanksgiving.

I have a Volkswagen Tiguan. So for us it isn't so much about fitting 2 car seats, but being able to fit 2 cars seats plus our bird in his carrier. When we go to my parent's house, we always bring our bird with us because they have an extra bird cage for him and it saves us money on bird sitting costs. There is no way that his carrier will fit between two carseats in the middle seat of the back row.

We also have been taking weekend trips where we are taking the bike trailer for DD so that we can go biking. To get everything to fit into DH's wagon, we need to have one of the seats lowered so we can store more items. My SUV probably wouldn't even fit everything in if we tried. And neither car would fit everything if there were 2 car seats.

We are looking at the VW Atlas with the captain's chairs in the middle row. When we dropped DH's car off for service a few months ago, we took a look at it and both really liked it. I sat in the third row and it was very comfortable, even for an adult. We are leaning towards the captain's chairs because I remember my brother and I hitting each other in the backseat of my mom's car when we were kids. That stopped when she got a van with captinan's chairs and it was harder to reach. We like that it takes regular gas too, as my current car takes premium. And the Atlas gets about the same mileage as the Tigaun, so fuel costs would likely be much less.

My current car is a 2013 and it's current appraisal is around $10k-$14k, so we would hopefully be able to get a decent return on it when we are ready to upgrade. My goal is to save up some money over the next 2 years for a down payment and to keep the monthly payments close to what we pay for DH's car right now.
I just looked at the Atlas yesterday! It's great! And the same thing, captains chairs! I'm looking specifically for a vehicle to replace mine with captains chair, or a van. I have captains chairs in my current car GMC and love the feature, also this is where my dog sits on car rides, lol. She has to be lifted in and out, she can't jump up or down, and is heavy. The few times I've transported kids' friends also the easy access to the third row was great, and also have used it quite a few times to haul things, such as able to haul IKEA boxes that need to get put together, etc. Very rare, of course, but just pointing out I didn't need help for someone else to come pick stuff up. My car also went through the two car seat phase, worked out great, tons of space in the third row for groceries.

I need a new car as mine now needs a new transmission. I could replace it, but the fix cost is about the exact value of what my car is worth, and can't guarantee something else then will go wrong. I already know I need new brakes, steering wheel issue also, so anyway we've just decided reluctantly my car is past it's prime. It's a personal choice some may choose to throw in another transmission and keep fixing, but I don't want to go that route. I have been car shopping every type of car model that fits my view for 7 seater this week and really very undecided.

Yes, it's nice to have assigned seats. That's the only thing about SW I'm not the biggest fan of, although once I'm seated I don't have any problems. It's just that initial "where to sit" part. We are trying to use up points from the SW cards, and the UR points. I am just bad at booking with points I think, I am just not seeing the great deals. BUT, I think it's because we are so locked in to our dates, and our time frames, it just puts self-imposed limits. I just really don't feel like waking at 330 am with kids to get ready and catch a 6 am flight when I know there will be early mornings for Disney just to save on points. Now, if it were just me and DH, I'd most definitely do it, I don't care what time I personally fly. I have to figure out who the other partners are for Chase UR. That'll be I guess a trip later on!
UR transfer 1 to 1 to United Airlines. You can also book flights on the Chase UR portal for any airline that shows up in the portal.

I looked at the Atlas earlier this year and really like it. We're in the middle of the 2 car seat years and actually had both girls still rear facing until we turned our almost 3 year old around a month ago. We currently have a 2013 Kia Sorento and I really like it. It has the 3rd row, but when that is up, there's essentially no trunk space. The Sorento, Atlas and the GMC Acadia were my top 3 picks. I'm thinking of actually upgrading to a full size truck in the next couple years as our primary family vehicle. By then, even with 2 car seats, they'll both be forward facing, we won't have the giant double stroller, and we can haul all our bikes and other toys along with the camper we keep dreaming of.

That's good to know, thanks. I'm stockpiling the UR points for a future trip beyond the Disney spring break. Honestly, I only ever used UR in the past to order store gift cards and order from Amazon, and I'm shifting now to keeping it for future traveling such as hotel or airfare.

Ran a half marathon this morning which all in (race fees, hotel and parking) cost me about 300 bucks. $300 to run 13 miles... my return on investment seems out of whack. LOL.

It was a beautiful morning though, a very inspiring all women race, and I met my goal of coming in under 2.5 hours (by 42 seconds) so I’m glad I took the challenge.

Ccongrats on your half! I'm planning on running my first one in November!

We just ordered almost $700 in furniture- ouch! We had the money for it but it still stinks to see it spent!

However, I'm really satisfied with what we got. 2 end tables, a coffee table, and a dining room table. the dining table was on a really great sale too, so I'm glad we got it now and saved the money on it. It's good stuff with great reviews that should last a long time.

@Tygerlilly - thanks! It was my second one but the last one was over 5 years ago, so kinda feels like a first again. I’ve decided to keep myself motivated I need to continue to sign up for these things. I’ve signed up for a 15K in March, I think I am going to do another half in May and am strongly considering the Chicago Marathon next year. I will really need to up my game for that one, but anything is possible!

It is not product, it is labor rates that has sky rocketed in the last 5years but labor rates have tripled, in the last 5 years.

Yes, I think this is the reason for the high quotes I have been getting. Cost of living is higher in my area, combined with a dearth of contractors and they can garner high labor rates.

Guys, my dryer stopped working again today. You may recall we had it repaired less than three weeks ago. Sigh. Need to call tomorrow. The guy had given me his number and technician number last time. Took DH’s car in for an oil change yesterday and it ended up also needing a fuel injection, so $200 more than we were anticipating. Ds15’s phone battery is not good so after spending time with an online support person who did diagnostics, I have to bring that in to an Apple store after work tomorrow. Luckily there is one near my office, and there was a recall on his model apparently so hopefully that is the problem and we won’t pay for it, but really, can things stop breaking? Plus I just wrote checks for the kids’ AP tests....bleeding money, I tell you.

Anyone else heading to Disney over spring break? Ours happens to be Easter week.

I don't have a counter going, because it is really uncertain that I'll be able to, but I'm hoping to go back over spring break. Ours is the 3rd week in March, though.

Spring Break, what is that? DS11's has been reduced to the Fri and Mon surrounding Easter thanks to our Governor mandating that schools not start until after Labor Day and need to complete by 6/15. That doesn't leave any time given all of the required teacher in-service days, Jewish holidays and other days that need to be accounted for. Somehow that extra week or so means more people will be flocking to Ocean City???

Re: weightloss- I've lost 20 pounds this spring- the only change I have really made is that I meal prep and eat low carb during my work week (mon-thurs) I take homemade pumpkin protein pancakes for breakfast (protein power, egg whiltes, canned pumpkin and a bit of ground oatmeal to hold them together- I make ahead of time and freeze), then a pre-made lunch which is some sort of frozen meal made ahead- usually something like chicken stirfry on cauliflower rice, butter chicken on cauliflower rice, that sort of thing. Ie no rice/noodles. For snacks at work I have veggies- I go through lots of snap peas, celery etc. I then don't worry about the weekend when I have sugar, some carbs etc.

You must be in Maryland like me. Although we don't live in Montgomery County, so we don't get the Jewish holidays off. We call "Spring break" "Spring weekend" now. Lol.

Happy 1st of October!
Paid off my smallest credit card debt this morning! :cool1: We now owe a total of just over $5400 on credit cards. If we hadn't bought a house and needed to buy appliances we'd owe about $2000ish less. Stupid appliances. Granted this is about $5000 less than what we owed at the beginning of last year, so I guess I should be excited by the progress. Depending on what we get back during tax season i'll either pay off/down more of the credit card debt, or my husbands student loans.

:offtopic: And in the spirit of October i'm attaching a couple pics of the decorations I put up over the weekend.

That's bizarre. I'm in VA and we start after Labor Day and finish right around June 15 every year. We don't get Jewish holidays off, but a week for Easter plus a variety of other half days/holidays.
