I will be headed to Edmonton for a few days in early April and hope to head to Jasper for one or two nights (hoping to see the Northen Lights).

I am looking for a safe, nice hotel for 1-2 nights near Edmonton that has an inroom hot tub . My friend sent me info on the hotels at the West Edmonton Mall, but I’m hoping to spend less $$ than a themed room.

Also, any other hints or tips for a visit to Edmonton? I will be meeting up with friends who are local, but will also have free time

It's actually not very likely at all that you'll see distinctive northern lights in Edmonton or Jasper; they're both too far south. Although we'd love to have you come up our way, if the northern lights are the only reason for your visit I'm afraid you'll be disappointed. :sad1: Here are a few other hotel options - I've got no direct experience; I just googled:

I know I’ve seen them once here but you have to be out of the city to see them. Even then, they’re nothing spectacular. Well, maybe if you’ve never seen them before but I wouldn’t plan a trip here just for that. I’d go up north for sure.

They were visible once in a while where I grew up (about 400 miles north-west of Edmonton). Even there though they weren't what you see on tv and what @happily single probably imagines. To see the dancing sheets of glowing green you need to be up in the Territories. I've heard they're also awesome around Churchill.

Oh, definitely. I remember going out to see some and being like, oh look, the sky is kinda green over there.

I remember seeing them when driving along a fairly deserted highway near Saskatoon and pointed them out to my kids...but, yeah, vague green lines on the horizon. The best I have ever seen them, which is the furthest north that I have ever been, was in Flin Flon, MB. I would love to get far enough north to where you can actually hear them. I think that would be cool.

Thanks everyone for the replies. My expectations are low for the northern lights. I am excited to see the natural parks in Jasper and spending time with some friends

Hopefully the animals will still be down in lower elevations in April so you can potentially see mountain goats, big horn sheep, and maybe the odd bear. If you get lucky and look closely, you may even catch sight of a jackalope in the underbrush! :duck:

Also, I know you were asking about a hotel with a hot tub. The only hotel that I have stayed at in Edmonton that had a hot tub in the room was at the West Edmonton Mall. Sorry I can't help much in that regard. I'm also pretty useless as far as recommending stuff to do in Edmonton, as my main reason for going was to check out West Edmonton Mall.

I’d suggest she go see an Oilers game but by April their season will be done
