New Credit Card Authorization Holds

I'm curious how this will work with different credit cards tied to different magic bands. For example, let's say me and my friend Sally are sharing a room. We plan to pay both of our expenses separately and Sally ties her credit card to her magic band and I tie my credit card to my magic band. Based on everything I've read so far, we both "should" get a hold for $N + $100, correct?
edit by both I mean both individually. Thanks.

Yeah, that's what I would expect. I'm in a slightly different situation in that I have 3 rooms booked on 2 reservations. Will I have 3, $100 holds (one per room) or 2? I have the same card linked for both reservations.

Probably depends if you do online check in or not. If you do online check in, it would whatever card is on file. After you add the second person's card, I would imagine then they would get the hold as well.

The room is under my friend's account so I expect we will have to discuss whether we online check-in or not. Thanks for that information.

Yeah and that's an edge case where things get dicey. At Universal they use holds in a similar way but I don't charge back to the room. I may end up just using Apple Pay and/or my gift cards directly out of simplicity so that my friend does not get dinged accidentally for any of my purchases as I know that splitting the charge accounts can be a little unreliable as well.

We checked into Boardwalk Wednesday. Room only, so sizable balance still due. They charged balance plus $100 that morning (still shows as pending on card). We do charge back to the room and exceeded that $100 quickly. Yesterday another pending amount showed up for the full amount I owed at checkin plus $200 this time. So now I have 2 huge pending amounts on my card. If they try that again today, we’re going to be pushing up against the limit on this card.

Thanks for this thread, I just changed which card is being used for my online check in to ensure I avoid problems, but really if there are going to keep authorizing for the full amount due + $100, then they need to drop the first charge off first, otherwise, after you hit $100 they need to just authorize for another $100.

Would you please clarify? If X is the balance owed at checkin, do you now have two holds, one for X + $100 AND one for X + $200 (meaning a total of two times X plus $300)? Or is there one hold for X + $200?

Yikes. I almost wish it was a per night hold like other hotels do. Not that I'd want a hold for 700 dollars right off the bat, but at least that's easier to plan for.

The way I read it, they now have two charges:
X + $100
and X + $200

So this is essentially 2X+$300, Disney IT at its finest once again.
Ouch! We're traveling with family in the fall and I usually link my card to both rooms (the trip is their Christmas gift), but with 7 people in two rooms, we're going to go over that $100 every time we have a meal. If charges essentially keep doubling every day, that could be a hefty balance by day 5.

I was so happy when the magic bands came out because of the ease it allows for not having to bring money with you to the parks....

Bands just replaced keycards. You could always charge back to the room.

And the system can always go down, so IMO you’re playing with fire by not bringing backup money.

Oh my. That’s not good at all.

Yeah. We're 7 "adults" in 3 rooms and looking at pretty hefty balances to pay off every few days. Each TS meal is going to run from $300-500 for us. Good thing my credit limit is fairly substantial! But I'd better have that balance near zero before our trip begins or we could be in trouble. Sigh.

that's worse than I thought! They keep holding against the entire balance??? Should just be adding $100 holds in increments, not the whole balance again.

This is really unbelievable. With $300 per night rooms being the median, and often people have 7 night stays, balance due can easily be $2000.

That means, at check out, someone could easily have $14,000 in holds on a $2000 bill. If they don't fix this, there's going to be tons of declined cards Disney is going to have to deal with. Plus, people may not have an alternate card that could cover the bill (and, they would be understandably under the belief the card with a $10,000 available balance would be more than sufficient, even if the common practice of double holds were utilized).

Exactly! I think I read that they'll process charges every 5 days, but I'll definitely be paying the balance for the room charges a few days before we travel if this is the way they're doing it. I may just pick up some new bracelet gift cards at F&G and give those to everyone to use instead of charging to the rooms.

I'm calling today and paying off my room only charge and checking in when we arrive, just to avoid all this bs garbage.

Question-I assume you don’t plan to charge anything to the room, right? Otherwise you would need to put a card on the account when you check in at the desk as well, and I would guess the new procedures would apply.

Yes, that’s how I read it as well, but I’d like confirmation that I read it correctly. If Disney does it like that, very few people will have CC limits that can carry the total, especially if it takes days for early holds to drop off.

Nope. For the first time in over 20 trips, I won't be charging back to the room. And I will be telling them why when they ask if I want to attach a card to the room.
