I love credit cards so much! v3.0 (see first page for add'l details)

Hi Everyone, I was wondering if I could get advice on using credit cards for buying a used car. I'm about to my teens a used car. I just started looking but I was wondering if it was possible to use credit cards to pay for it. (I have the cash to pay for it in full but I was thinking maybe I could earn points if I use a credit card) Also, any particular card to use? Thanks in advance!
I shopped around to find a dealership that would allow $5k on my last used car. And then the jerks did a hard pull on me even though I financed through my credit union!

I got a mailer today for a CIP for 100 k points with a $15k spend. At first I was intrigued, but then I realized my DH could refer me and we could net 100k for $5k spend. Am I missing something?

In other news ... total churning fail. This is the second time I've made this same mistake. I constantly confuse myself on the differences between the business platinum and personal platinum. For some reason I had it in my head that hotels booked directly with the personal plat get 5x. They don't. The difference is that airlines booked directly with the airline on the personal platinum get 5x points whereas it's only through the portal with the business. So for the second time I paid a hotel directly with my husband's platinum thinking I'd be getting 5x. Banging head. I even have a spreadsheet, but I didn't bother looking because I *thought* I knew what I was doing.

Now I'm confused. I thought it doesn't matter, personal or biz, you can only get the 5x through the portal?

I feel you-I booked one if not 2 flights with my biz plat forgetting that the only way it earns 5X MRs on airlfare is through their travel portal. So it can happen to all of us! On a happier note (perhaps)-how did the half go?

Is that just for the Biz? I know we get 5x on all the flights we book (not through the portal) but that's with the personal card. They don't make it easy, do they?

I think I'd have my travel mug on my desk all the time because it says Work Hard, Disney Harder for her to see every time she went by it. I don't care if you want to be a workaholic but you don't get to make me one especially since it's been so long since I've actually had a job I wanted/enjoy.
In the healthcare world, you pretty much have to be a workaholic to be in senior management. I feel bad about her workload, but she chose that. She chose to not see her kids, no judgement, but you make choices. I've always been family first work second. I show up on time do my job, but I'm not one to go above and beyond or put in any more hours than I'm required. I make less money, but I'm ok with that.

Is that just for the Biz?

Yes, it's totally confusing which is why I did it a time or two. If you just pay say, Delta with the biz plat that earns a whopping 1x MR. :sad1: The beauty of the Biz is the 35% MRs back if you use MRs to book a flight...again through their travel site. It's a hassle although was worth it for our most recent redemption AKL-LAX.

Thanks for the replies. I will check with the dealer. I just got a new CIP and just finished MSR on that one. I was thinking of getting a new card but I'm 4/24 already. Anyone know if a dealership would code as transportation for CSR/CSP?

Like others have replied, it depends on the dealer whether they allow credit cards. I would get a new card since you should meet the minimum spend requirement (MSR) pretty quick. Are you new to the thread? We usually recommend you start with Chase cards.

Huh. Our spreadsheet has it listed at 5x. Will have to go in and fix that I guess. I don't think we have ever booked a flight on the Biz.

Not sure if this has been mentioned before since I’ve been skimming the thread.

For those of us with a CSR: Once you link your CSR card to your Lyft account there’s more to do besides the Pink membership for 15% off so you can increase your bang for your buck. If you link your Hilton Honors account and your Delta Sky Pesos account you can double dip and earn extra points and miles for your Lyft rides too.
Thanks for reminding me. I linked my Doordash and Lyft to CSR on but couldn’t find the Hilton/Lyft link. Looked on the app today and got it all set

Silly Chase. DH got an email this morning that he was approved for the CIP and the card was on its way (the one he was approved for on Wednesday and received yesterday). He has already told me all the scuba trips he wants to put deposits down on for 2020 and 2021 so MSR will be met quickly. It only has a $6000 CL so I will have to pay it off mid-cycle I think. (is that frowned on?)
DH got his CIP last week, already put $4800 on it. Got the congrats email from Chase yesterday. 🙄. Pretty sure paying mid cycle won’t be a problem. There are people on this thread who pay weekly or more often without issues.

Do you work? I mean other than here... :rotfl2:
I wonder that often...
Here's your friendly reminder that Southwest Airlines next schedule release is expected to occur THURSDAY, March 12th!. For those planning to snag flights, set those calendar reminders so you don't forget!

I'm sharing this now because it previously was listed as February 13th but has been pushed back a month. Stay posted as this date is subject to change!
  • Currently SW is offering flights through 8/10/20 and this next release will take their schedule out to 10/31/20. I'll try to post additional reminders as the date draws nearer.
For those that care about "release timing" it's been all over the board recently (all times Eastern):
  • The release on 12/11/19 went live at 9:10am.
  • The release on 10/30/19 went live at 7:15am.
  • The release on 9/26/19 went live at 7:30am.
  • The release on 8/15/19 went live at 10:41am.
  • The release on 5/30/19 went live at 9:20am.
I’m a little bummed this is being released already. I’m usually chomping at the bit to book but DSs school schedule has not been released for next year. I’d like to do a trip in September or October when there are usually a few 3 day weekends but the darn school district is so slow.

Been a busy couple of weeks for me. FIL was put in hospice shortly before our Aruba trip on January 4th. Wasn’t sure if we would still go but DH was at peace with it. We got back the 10th and FIL passed away this morning. So we all got to spend more time with him even though he was not really there. But would squeeze your hand when talking to him. Glad we made it back before he passed.
So sorry for your loss. Glad you made it back for more time with FIL

On to lighter topics. Aruba trip was good. Had flights booked for 7 of us with AA reward flights. I knew my shutdown rate was low but you just didn’t know what could happen. Everything was fine. No issues at all. Stayed at the Marriott Renaissance and Marriott Stellaris with Marriott points. Liked both places very much. But boy Aruba is not cheap. Weather was great!!

So I had upgraded last April to the Amex Brilliant card and paid the $450 fee. I thought that the fee would not be due again until then but I just got hit with the annual fee again. Not sure if I should keep it. This year we have trips to Vegas/Disneyland and then an Alaskan Cruise and Caribbean Cruise. So not sure when I would get to take advantage of all the extras. Would love others input. Can I downgrade the card and the upgrade again if needed?

CSR annual fee was just paid in November so have a bit to think about that. But we normally book cruises with the points so will probably keep it. Unless they come up with a new SUB. DH may be eligible for that. Have to look at my spreadsheet but our internet has been down at work since yesterday afternoon. Cant get anything done. Everything is online!!

I'm so sorry  I hope that you can hold onto your memories of good times together.

Well...March is better than February right? They are running way behind the normal schedule of releases right now it seems.

Yes, maybe the district will release the schedule by then. One year, they announced the first day of school for the next year in March but the rest of the schedule in May or June. It was ridiculous.

I’m sort of in the same boat. We should have the schedule by then. I used to be upset they wouldn’t give us the schedule before our Jan trip because I would consider buying APs if weekend trips were a possibility. Now that doesn’t irk me because APs are so expensive I don’t consider them 🤣 😢

And just regular tickets are soooo expensive. I remember paying just about $200 pp for a 7 day hopper. Yesterday I paid more than twice that.

DH approved for Amex Green! 45k MR's with $150 Away credit and only a $2000 spend. Only card I could get that offer to come up was with my Green and its small measly 5000 MR support bonus. But it is a card that for once DH is excited to get...I ordered my Away luggage with the credit and he really liked it and wants one of his own. So now we can both be fancy and boujee!

Today is the last day to apply with the Away credit if anyone is on the fence. It will take a personal spot but it has some other benefits as well as the travel category, so is easily used at Disney (i.e. I booked HDDR for our March trip and it coded as 3 times MR).

I don't see any dischurners links for the 45,000 MR for this card? Does this offer still exist?
