News Round Up 2020

Not trying to be harsh, but I'm having a hard time understanding people's POV right now.

"Parks closed, hope they keep building out my fantasy so I can get into Tron when it opens"

Social distancing is what's going to restore everything we love dear. Let's embrace it.
People aren't like that at all here at least I wouldn't describe it that way.

To be fair you CAN practice social distancing and still be doing things. Social distancing doesn't mean don't do anything. The fact is there are some construction projects that you can do this but for a variety of places in various industries stuck in this whole mess they just up and say it's easier to not think about it.

People talking about work that could be done doesn't equate to calling for Disney to smush a bunch of people inside Haunted Mansion one on top of each other and go to work :)

If Disney wants to stop construction to save money or for whatever reason they want, I really couldn't care less. I mean, sure I'd love it if this gave them a chance to get things done in a more efficient manner, but maybe that's not the way they want to go right now. But most construction workers will NOT get their paychecks if they aren't working, and while I do understand entertainment and travel industry workers having to take it on the chin right now (I hate it that they will suffer through this) I do not understand how construction workers would somehow be any different from any other office and in fact, since a lot of construction takes place outdoors, they might even be better off than most office workers! I'm just confused by the people who are saying the cessation of construction is tied to the 10-person recommendation.
I suspect it's logistically something Disney want to deal with but it could also be how much materials they reasonably have and can get access to and probably labor pay (which obviously doesn't help the construction workers out). So it's possible it's just multiple things coming into play and the 10 person limit spoken about all over the place just added another layer of stress.

But FWIW I agree with you in the general sense because construction work commonly has you spread out or at least you can in a various types of construction can adjust things to have more distance between each other.

And I def. don't want the road construction here to stop..thank goodness the winter wasn't as bad as last year where it was pothole America lol.

I WANT those people to be employed and earning a paycheck .. we are shutting down way too much and destroying our economy in the process. The more people that can continue to earn their living, the better.

But what will more than likely happen is Disney will STOP all these projects and (and stop paying the contractors) using the "10-person rule" as an excuse since they aren't really making a lot of money right now. They don't want a lot of money going out when nothing is coming in .. and NO end in sight.

I feel every local government is just trying to outdo the other to look better? Oh .. you have closed bars/restaurants for the rest of the month? Well WE will close them for the next 30 days? Oh ya .. WE are better than you .. we will close them for 45 days!

Disney World is going to be a shell of its former self for a long time after (when ever that "after" starts) .. potentially no Epcot, delays on Tron, no entertainment, .. .it will be eerie.

The reason closures are being extended is not to one-up each other, it's because it is from recommendations given by professionals. All this doomsaying about the economy is absurd. Also, I don't understand why you're assuming our economy would function normally even without closures? People would be infected, those who are displaying symptoms will continue to miss work, hospitals and healthcare offices will be overwhelmed, and travel would still be restricted.

I would imagine that is subject to current rules in place where they are being built. I don't recall which shipyard the new ships are being built at.
The Dream and Fantasy were built at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. I believe the new ships are to be built by the same company.

This might be reaching for things, but thought was interesting that the latest version of the Disneyland app now has an icon and section for "Virtual queues" (queues, plural) so perhaps hinting that more rides will feature a virtual queue system

Definitely interesting. I don't expect that the new Spider-Man attraction will be in enough demand to warrant a virtual queue, but I can't think of any others that would use it. It's not like we have a Flight of Passage out here that will demand waits over 2 hours consistently.

maybe for when MMRR opens there?

or maybe just add it to existing rides that get long waits? (Indiana Jones, etc.)?

I dunno. MMRR is at least two years away at this point, not counting any delays in construction. Indiana Jones rarely gets lines over an hour, as does Space Mountain. The only time I've ever seen a line over 2 hours in Disneyland proper is either Christmas Day or the Matterhorn when one side goes down, and even that seems inflated to me. I don't really think a virtual queue would be warranted for anything outside of maybe Radiator Springs Racers, and even then I feel like the current system works just fine.

People have longed complained what a hassle it is to get FPs 60 days in advance at WDW. Could DL be moving to an online FP system in the way of all Virtual Queues you only that you can get once you arrive in a park for the day? (I'll admit, I don't really know how FPs work at DL as I haven't been there in 20 years) If so, would WDW follow suit?

I'm one who loves the current FP+ system and hope that it stays but I know not all feel the same way I do.

Just thinking out loud....

That is more or less how their upcharge MaxPass system works now, in fact. You can't get one until you get there, you use your phone to get it, and you get into a virtual queue, only instead of giving you a number with no time they give you a time based on how many people are already in the virtual line. So this wouldn't really be that different.

yeah, I have thought a bit about basically replacing traditional standby with a virtual queue system - to have in addition to FP+ or Maxpass or whatever.

Well, looking at it that way, the original FastPass system (which MaxPass is just an app-based version of), is just a stripped-down virtual queue. An interesting way of thinking of things for sure!

Suspending construction projects to save money is not what they are thinking. The longer a project takes the more expensive it gets (cost of materials go up, etc.)...delaying these projects just means they will cost exponentially more in the long run. If they felt they could have construction going on they certainly would, they are following CDC guidelines and thinking about the health and safety of the workers.
