Disneyland Reopening Speculation Superthread

The unions representing DL workers have been eerily silent throughout all this.

Remember when they collectively sent a letter to Newsom begging him to not let Disneyland open back in June? Remember how they demanded onsite daily testing?

Maybe this is the crux of the issue here. Maybe the Unions aren't happy with DL and the Governor is siding with them?

He was rehired to steer Disney through Covid, But Josh is President of the Parks.. so I am not sure Iger would ever be approached to say anything. It's not his area.

The last time he made a comment was about Chadwick Boseman's death in August.

Well if you are to believe the article a good number of these people let go were non union. Cast members WANT to get back to work, I very much doubt the unions are siding with Newsom. Plus right here shows that after a while Disney will let go of those contract to protect it's business.

Conspiracy theory time. Unless it’s all a well thought out plan worked out between Disney and Newsom so he could announce parks reopening without much political backlash! This way it looks like he had no choice but to cave to the pressure, announce guidelines, and everyone wins.

Joking but really... at this point. 🤷‍♀️
I mean, that’s just as likely as anything else at this point. I also think unions are a part of the puzzle, along with other interests we may not be aware of.

Although, I doubt anyone in CA is too happy that the firing of 28,000 people across the country was pretty much blamed on Disneyland not being opened, even though that appears to be a stretch.

Actually your thought wouldn't surprise me at all. :wave2:

I think it's a part bluff, but I think one that should be taken seriously. Reason being is that the wording of the statement was, essentially, "begin the process" of making CMs redundant. To me, if I tell someone I'm starting the process, I'm literally just bringing up a list of people that will be fire. That's a couple of clicks on a keyboard and an unlimited amount of time looking.

Just because he's starting something, doesn't mean he's going to finish it (laying off CMs)...that's how I read that statement. "Gov, open the parks, and I won't drop these people into the shark tank!"

I heard some interesting perspective:

The Staples Center holds about 19,000 for basketball, and 20,000 for concerts. Maybe @WonkaKid can confirm.

28,000 is A LOT of people!
Yes, that’s about right. Expressed in other terms, Disney is poised to lay-off approximately 1.5 Staples Centers.

And this includes about 1000 that have already been laid off from the 23 Disney stores one last month.

So I think this has been in the works for a a month or so... they are just using it to take shot and force Newsom's hand,

It makes sense 3/4 are part timers as they usually have less seniority and less benefits to pay, which lead to the idea this is a cost cutting more than a California thing. I don't think even if Disneyland opens up next month it will have any impact on the job cuts in Florida.

I'll take that bet and up it to a chimichanga's that it is sooner. or at least we hear by tomorrow or Wed we hear a press conference set.

Though I would not be surprised if suddenly guideline are quietly released.

i agree, I think they will be silently dropped. I think I’ll skip the pressers going forward.

The same way they released playground guidelines today.

Without fanfare.

It would avoid immediate questions afterwards.
Do you remember what time the guidelines were added for the playground? Maybe they will quietly update the theme park guidance at the same time?
