News Round Up 2020

In some cases things will come back. As far as eating out and going to the movies unfortunately it's accelerated what was already happening before Covid. Many people prefer to stay home over going out. It started before Covid and now is just accelerated. Its very sad to see our society turn into hermits.

I don’t know. Before covid we were always on the go - to the movies, out to eat, to the zoo, to the mall to just wander around and get out of the house. Go go go. Covid taught us how to ... just be home. My kids (4 & 5) experienced a 1980s-style summer like I had as a kid. They experienced real boredom and became so creative with play.
That was actually a really good thing.

This whole thing actually showed me that my kids were growing up much differently than I did. My parents didn’t drag us all over to restaurants and movies and activities constantly. Those things were more special occasions.

I can’t wait to be able to go to a movie, carefree. Dine indoors at a restaurant without worry, etc. For now, we support businesses we love any way we can within our comfort level. But we did learn some positive things in all of this - how to just be home.

Some of it for us on money - either we take the whole family or get a baby sitter. Either way it's like a $100/evening to go to the movies. More than that to each out at a decent place

Plus being around people stresses me out - I recharge being alone

I am sooooo feeling this post. Being around people for too long drains me of all energy. I was made for a pandemic I guess.

It seems that Sould had a screening at the BFI's festival, and it seems to have very positive reviews (Graham Norton is in it, but others have also said it is good :) )

Seems weird he ends his statement with "hope it comes to the bug screen for everyone " ... I mean, won't basically same amount of people be able to get Disney+ as would have access to a theater?

My guess is for reasons that I wanted to see this in a movie theater. Animation almost always plays better on the big screen for me the first time and this movie’s music was put together by Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails which I wanted to hear with the full movie theatre audio experience.

Ok, that makes more sense that I reread it with that frame of mind - not that being in the theater gives access to more people, just that it enables people to view it with the theater experience

As someone with two kids headed into this industry (VFX/animation--one in college the other getting ready to apply) the teams who work on these films are massive. I'd be heartbroken if it was my family member's first project (or even tenth!) and we didn't get to see the credits roll on the big screen...

Just my perspective regarding why not getting that big screen run is sad for more than the stars.

I don't disagree that it would be better if available in the theaters - just when I first read the quote I thought he was implying only a super limited number of people would have access now vs "everybody" having access if it was in theaters, and I don't necessarily agree with ilthat

But as I mentioned above I think I misinterpreted what he was trying to say

Good luck to your kids

What saddens me is how more and more we as a society have become hermits. I see it all the time even before Covid. Its not just the theatres, its restaurants, bars and live events. More and more would rather stay home then go out to do anything.

I'm all about going out and doing things. But spending $60 to bring a family of 5 to the theatres is not something I value to do often. I used to go a lot, but with kids... it's been just the big movies of the year. I rather stay at home.

Same with NFL games, I used to be a season ticket holder for the NY Giants. The product is better at home (not the Giants, they're terrible, but the broadcast is).

AMC is letting people rent an *entire theatre* to watch a back catalog movie for as little as $99 right now. But popcorn is extra.

Also, saw this this morning:

(reminder that if AMC goes bankrupt it is very likely that either their bond holders keep running it themselves or someone buys them)

I did see that. There is a theater near us that did this in the past but just for like mornings - so it became popular for kids birthday parties

Not a bad idea if people have group that is sort of "in there bubble" to rent together. Personally I am still a bit nervous about being inside for that long with people outside of my family

I agree. It was already happening before Covid. I look at the thread in this board about people doing things they used to do. Many posted saying they rarely went out to eat, drink or go to the movies.

People can say that - but I was always blown away by the sheer opposite. Restaurants opening everywhere and waits always long. Especially younger people that almost never cook for themselves. This may cause a shift back but I think the truth is that once people feel safe those with the money will continue to go out.

I think the whole movies staying closed thing is so odd. If we can sit in a restaurant 50% full of people, why can't we sit in a movie theater 50% full of people?

Especially if everyone is wearing masks.

People are still afraid to be indoors even if others are all mask compliant I suppose.

Although there are people who work indoors for hours everyday - Target, grocery stores, and there have been no huge outbreaks reported since before masks were required.

What are you gonna do? People just going to be people. :)

In most states you can. People are just choosing not to. Sure, some of the bigger states like NY and CA still restrict movie theaters, but they also restrict a lot of other things. But here in AL, movie theaters are open, it's just no one wanted to go. Some of that was because there were no movies worth seeing, but a lot is people just don't feel comfortable. Our local drive in, however, is packed. What does that tell you? In some states it's the rules, but even if those were lifted, there just isn't enough demand to make it worthwhile.

I think the theatre experience is different. I really REALLY hope that Mulan gets a theatre release when they reopen because as much as I liked the movie on +, I so want to see that on a big screen.

Part of that is though taking advantage of the weather while you can and that has been the rhetoric too (to do all that you can outside). What will people feel comfortable doing (ie. taking on the risks) when outdoors is no longer feasible when the weather shifts might be more telling on the demand front. So will I think how illnesses (of all kinds, flus, colds, sinus and more) play out this fall and winter.

Of course like I mentioned earlier on with all new releases just getting pushed further and further back it can be hard to make the case to go to the theater. I just got an e-mail from AMC about giving me my replacement birthday gift (that was in May when they were not open) but yet what's even available is just not there. Tenet is like the only one that seems appealing. I would have been more willing to check back into going into the movies...if there was you know a new movie to see..
