Disney Parks laying off 28,000 cast members

The shows/entertainment at WDW are my favorite parts of Disney. While I like the attractions, that's not why I go to Disney. This breaks my heart, but hopefully they will be back at some point. My guess would be mid-to-late 2021, maybe 2022 depending on how things work out.

I think it's going to be longer. I doubt they come back until they're in a better place financially. It'll take a few to several years for them to recover from this - especially since we don't know how long "this" is even going to last yet.

I had planned a May 2021 trip. This news has killed my hope of things being normal by then. I was hoping with "hopefully" multiple vaccine options for early 2021, that Disney would be almost 100% by summer.

This news shows they feel differently. And I will likely not be going back until 2022.

Same here. We have a 2 year. We already pushed our planned trip from Feb to end of May 2021. With a toddler under the height requirement for a lot of rides and no shows and no characters to meet even if it would be a socially distanced meet, just not seeing the point.

I get that Disney has to cut some things but this just seems so extreme. I feel terrible for all this cast members who’ve lost jobs. And yea maybe some entertainment will come back, but I feel it’ll be at least a year if not more once a vaccine is widely available. If this goes on for more than that, Disney is gonna risk losing potential repeat lifetime visitors if all the magic that makes a Disney park more special than a standard theme park as we choose to go elsewhere.

Notice they waited til after the deadline to cancel ap’s to do this...

Universal has kept nearly all entertainment. Some of it I don’t think is really safe as the actors are right next to each other, but there’s more that Disney could do. I was going to drop my Uni pass and keep my WDW pass but I think I’m going to switch it. Uni has much more distancing in place too. I’ve had a WDW pass nearly continuously for half my life.

To keep a show ongoing under these circumstances requires a number of parties to agree. Disney can say yes, the public says yes, but the actors (as represented, if applicable) can say yes. But if the specifics do not match, meaning they all have different ideas on how, then the act is mothballed. There may be more than just these three involved in the decision bear in mind.

I do believe this is mostly temporary. Now does that mean mid 2021 or late 2022 I don't know. But there is too much infrastructure here, and too much capacity, for these shows to be gone for good

I don't know .. Disney has a history of keeping infrastructure around for closed attractions for a LONG time - the entire Wonders of Life Pavillion. The Odyssey Restaurant. Stitch's Great Escape, etc.

Indiana Jones has needed to go for a while .. since it is the final holdout of the old "Making of Movies" theme that MGM Studios used to be (and is no longer). Most action movies aren't even made that way anymore .. it's all just green screens and CGI.

I'd love to see Lion King and Nemo back with a new script.

As for the ancillary streetmosphere. I think they will bring them back slowly, but really they have been essentially replaced by something very similar ... the character cavalcades. Having these things in LOW crowds is probably better. Honestly .. I never realized Citizens of Hollywood were a thing until I started reading these forums years ago, as the Old Hollywood section of DHS is just a "pass through" anyway. They aren't quite as immersive as the stormtroopers in SWGE.

Disney has an issue right now with not enough to do to spread out the crowds (which you need to do even more in a pandemic) ..especially in parks like DHS and AK and EPCOT.

We had been thinking of a resort-only stay next time. The Nemo and Lion King shows being gone (or hopefully on hiatus) settles it. This is devastating for the cast and crew. We know a DL performer who's been laid off and yeah it's a life altering thing. I pin this on Bob Chapek.

Yeah because the worldwide pandemic didn’t have anything to do with the situation right? Or the fact that DL is not allowed to open? It’s all, 100%, Chapek’s fault?

Its not all his fault but they were planning on cutting a lot before Covid.

Oh I know that. I’m just pointing out the error of saying that ALL of these cuts are due to Chapek. As if there was no COVID right now, Chapek would have laid off the entire entertainment staff in one fell swoop.

So .. when they say Star Wars Galaxy's Edge First Order Encounter .. does that mean that Kylo Ren and the Stormtroopers won't be wandering around? What about the Resistance?

If so ..ugh

Wonders of Life lost it's sponsor. Anything in EPCOT without a sponsor was shuttered. That's how the Park was run. It was a stupid model that left EPCOT in serious need of attention, but that was the situation and Disney held that line 20+ years after it's due date. I have no doubt if some company wanted to sponsor Wonders of Life back in 1999-2007, it would have stayed open. Once Body Wars started being cannibalized for Star Tours, even that became a non-starter.

Stitch's Great Escape has not been closed all that long. Now I'm not saying it won't be, especially now, but it's been less than 2 years. That attraction is particularly difficult to re-imagine. It's an odd shape and size. EPCOT hardly needs more restaurants, so closing Odyssey was probably strategic. Though why they keep adding restaurants, especially in World Showcase, the one place on property you can pretty much always find a walk up sit-down meal somewhere, I just don't understand. Never have and I suppose it's a hole in my argument.

The point is, these are somewhat special case items. I just don't see popular, people eating attractions like FotLK not reopening when Disney starts operating more normally. It's a signature attraction at AK. Some of the others are in need of a revamp, and it wouldn't surprise me at all if Indiana Jones doesn't reopen, though with the pressure on DHS these days I think it would be foolish not to have something there to pile in a couple thousand people for 30-45 minutes.

Anyway, we will see. I'm not a Rose Colored Glasses WDW guy, I'm plenty critical of them. But right now, they are doing things that absolutely suck for stakeholders, especially Cast Members, but make a significant amount of sense given the environment. It's simply too early to criticize them on the assumption that things won't reopen when times are more normal.

While Disney has certainly cut some beloved things in recent years, they also invested heavily in new fixed attractions. We tend to lambaste them for the cuts a lot more than we recognize them for the investments. And right now we are lambasting them for cuts on items that are closed for reasonable reasons. I'm willing to hold off on that criticism until I see if they reopen or refill these attractions when it becomes more reasonable to open based on crowd and social restrictions.

SWGE has stormtroopers out post-Covid- they're up on the balconies or other places away from the crowds.

Right .. but one of the tweets specifically listed "Star Wars Galaxy's Edge First Order Encounter" .. so I was wondering what that was referencing. Maybe just the DL cast?

Is anyone else crying over this news? I feel silly sitting here crying but I am super sad. My kids are 4 and 6 and they love the shows! They are small and don't do "scary rides," so we are always doing shows, parades and character meet and greets. This is so sad for us. I am also so sad for these CM. I am sure this has shattered so many lives. We are going in a few weeks for a MK only trip (was going to do another park but just not even worth it for us). We were also going to go next November 2021 on a huge trip with all 4 parks but now I am not even sure that is going to work. These layoffs show me that the situation as bleak for Disney right now, and I can't imagine they will recover all of these losses in 12 months. Just awful!

I'm wondering if it's the small stage show they would do near the First Order shop. Now that I think about it, I haven't seen that since the reopening.
