A (2019) HalloXmas trip to Asia - Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tokyo! - COMPLETED 5/1!!!

And the princess portion. It’s cool how Cinderella took over the top spot on the hat.

I do love how the hat stays lit after the show for photos!

Fantasmic is always a fun show, though I still prefer the Disneyland version! (Also this show is now officially over at TDR. The barges have actually been sold to Disneyland Paris for their lake show for the Walt Disney Studios expansion! No word yet on where the hat float went to though.)

Coming up - Another nighttime water show

Once again proving that the weakest Fantasmic of them all resides at WDW! I can't wait to see the one in Disneyland someday, so I can finally witness the best!

Interesting about Fantasmic ending at TDL--have they already replaced it with someting else (more amazing, too, I'm sure!)

There is just something about night time shows!!!!

How american of them!

Now THAT is a HAT!!!!
Night time shows are the best! I can't wait until they come back to Disney!

I don't know which was better - the Hank hat or the Hamm the pig hat? Though it was more likely to see squads of girls walking around all with Hamm hats, which was hilarious!

I still haven't seen it at WDW! I just never really bothered... one day though!

And yes, I can't wait until you see it at Disneyland! The best one was the original but the new one isn't half bad either.

Nothing replaced yet due to the pandemic. The parks actually shut down before Fantasmic got to take it's formal finale. I don't know if they were going to immediately replace the show, but I think they have something in the works.

Part 6 Colors of Christmas

Spencer and I (and lots of other people) hung around our spots for another little while in order to keep the good spot for Colors of Christmas. Oh, and at this point I decided what I was going to use my ride access pass for – the gondolas. They have gondolas that go down some canals in Mediterranean Harbor and also into the main harbor, and I hadn’t gotten a chance to ride yet. But the gondolas also were limited hours, not running during or right before/after the harbor shows (and there were currently 5: 3x It’s Christmas Time, Fantasmic, and Colors of Christmas). I even went over to check with the CM working the ride (which wasn’t even open then due to the harbor shows), and he confirmed I could use it…

Anyways, I chilled out a bit longer for the show. And this time no railings blocking my photos! (These aren’t necessarily in order of the show though; it doesn't really have a linear storyline.)

The big ship was really pretty with all the lights.

So, as I mentioned previously, I decided I wanted to use my multi-experience pass for the gondolas, so I made my way over right after the show. And the queue was closed. People were in it, but the CMs said it was full. Um, what? I tried to explain I had the pass, and they basically just shook their heads (with a smile of course). And I said I was leaving in the morning, still nope. So, ugh! I was just in such a frustrated mood at that point (there were so many of those moments all day) that I just gave up and didn’t end up using it for any ride.

Before I left, I did do a little bit more shopping. (retail therapy, am I right?)

I definitely had to do a lot of packing (I had tried to do some during the last week but of course I still had to do more)!

And that was it for my experiences at Tokyo Disney parks! I’ll do more of a wrap up after I finish posting about my travel home the following day! But I was definitely looking forward to getting back home!

Those nighttime shows look amazing! Bummer that you couldn't use your pass on the gondolas.

What a great trip! But I can totally understand that feeling of ready to go home!

I can image! It sounds like an amazing trip but also an exhausting one!

I still haven't seen it at WDW! I just never really bothered... one day though!
You'll be shaking your head wondering what you just sat through, LOL! BUT, I highly recommend the reserved seating and "dessert party" when you go. You get a box of desserts, light up lanyard and light up cup with very tasty drink choices! It's the highlight for me :)

Oh, how funny that would turn out to be! When we thought masks were a novelty instead of a necessity!

Wow that night time show looked incredible!!

That is some evil foreshadowing right there lol.

Sorry about not being able to use the pass for the gondolas...I would have been mad too..and also surprised that Disney didn't accommodate you anyway being your last night...ugh.

Fantasmic and Colors of Christmas both seemed really fun!

That stinks about the gondolas and not being able to use your pass :(

Yeah it was annoying i never got to ride them! Another trip I suppose!

Haha, yeah I figure the dessert option is the way to go!

I remember just shaking my head whenever I saw people wearing them on public transport. But now it's the opposite! (Though I still feel weird seeing everyone with them in normal places like Disneyland!)

Time to go home!

Today was departure day. My flight was leaving at 5pm from Narita airport (and arriving at 9:45am in LAX, so I was time travelling today, lol!)

I checked how much cash I had left and went down to the Disney store in the lobby to buy a couple more things with them – 3 boxes of chocolate for friends, a pack of “Tea Chocolates” for my mom’s friends, a Christmas tin of chocolates (I more wanted the tin), and Churro Snacks, which were sort of like the dried pasta snacks but with a cinnamon flavoring (too crunchy for me, but the packaging was adorable though so I've kept it on my shelf)

XNVD9LC.jpg

For breakfast I stopped at the bakery and got a chocolate penguin (the mascot of the Sheraton in Japan), which was yummy! I also got a bread pastry, but it looks like there was a puff pastry stick on the bottom to hold it up (I also forgot to take a photo of the front so I don’t know if it had a cute theme or not).

IazxAPB.jpg
zCaMduE.jpg

I finished the last of the packing (all with my balcony door open so I could hear the sounds from the parks, including the Christmas parade and harbor show). And headed down to the lobby where I bought my bus ticket to the airport. Since I was leaving in the middle of the day I could take the Airport Limousine bus, which was about 200 yen, rather than the private van I had to hire to get there at night.

Though I did make a mistake and didn’t realize they only take cash; so much for using up all my cash on chocolate. And then when I went to the atm I made a mistake and rather than taking out 200 yen ($20), I took out 2000… so I had plenty of money left at the end. I used some of it at the hotel arcade and then duty free souvenirs (i.e. alcohol for my brother and a friend) but I still have a 1,000 yen bill.

Anyways, I had about an hour between buying a bus ticket and the bus coming (they come every hour but I just missed buying a ticket for the one leaving in about 10 minutes). This little guy was hanging around the lobby so I got a photo!

dy0kPHm.jpg
IXzYLbQ.jpg

And went to the arcade area. Here is the photo studio, with lots and lots of outfits and Disney costumes to wear!

pVcOtLK.jpg

At the arcade I was pretty lucky and won the same claw machine two times in a row! It was little plush keychains, one Chip and one Mickey (I think), which I gave to my friends kids.

Anyways, onto the bus! It was about an hour journey and it picks up at all the hotels around Tokyo Disney.

uJEUFee.jpg

Pretty easy at the airport, just had to drop off my bags and then get thru security. I also went to Duty Free and got two sets of alcohol – they have lots and lots of inexpensive but good quality and pretty options!

In the Business Class Lounge, they had a sushi guy come in to make fresh sushi. I got a bunch, and despite being too much wasabi, it was yummy! I also got made-to-order ramen, though I missed the pickup time so the noodles absorbed most of the broth.

My home for the next 12 hrs… I actually was in the “mini” cabin. The way that ANA plane worked was you had 4 rows of first class, then the first class galley and bulkhead, then 2 rows of business, then bulkheads and the business galley, and another 10 rows of business. Which made those 2 intermediate rows of business very very quiet and private, as there were only 8 people in that area! I had checked into plenty of reviews online and this area was recommended, so it was nice and peaceful.

LVG8Wpj.jpg

I only ended up having one meal onboard because I slept thru the other and by the time I asked the flight attendants, it was too late.

I believe the Amuse Bouche was a ****ake mushroom tart and marinated sea bream on eggplant. Um…interesting. Corn Soup with bread choice; I got the baguette and 2 of the Pumpkin Breads.

PAEU6MA.jpg
5sTxkpu.jpg

Main course was the Glacage on fillet of beef panee with Madeira wine sauce.

ZohUYgW.jpg

I think I skipped dessert because I wasn’t interested in the options? ANA does have a lot of good snack options, and I may have gotten some, but didn’t take photo evidence (I think I did get some of the Ben and Jerry’s ice cream.)

Overall, I really just slept on the plane! It had been a long trip and I was exhausted! I also probably watched some movies..

On the approach into LA I got to see the Hollywood Sign, Dodger Stadium, and future SoFi Stadium (can’t wait until we get to actually enter that stadium! update - I did a couple weeks ago and it's sooo gorgeous)

Customs and immigration was painless, and mom was there to pick me up! So happy to be home!

Some photos of my merch (and no matter how ridiculous you think my purchases are, I actually didn’t include all of them, especially some items which I sent onto my friends!)

Candy containers from Tokyo. The Christmas popcorn cart, Gelatoni, and Forky trash can. (I also got one of Mickey in a Haunted Mansion doom buggy). Tokyo’s version of MMs too – Gelatoni came with Duffy and friends designs!

The Tokyo advent calendar actually comes unassembled, so you put all the candies into the little slots. This actually allows for reusing in future years! There were physical chocolates, stuffed marshmallows, and gummies. I had to use google translate on the back of the box to identify everything!

As I mentioned, this wasn’t even a full merch haul! I really should have kept better track, but it was tough getting back and immediately needing to get over jetlag and unpack too!

And a Final Wrap-up:

Obviously this was such a dream trip! I definitely had some hard experiences with crowds in Tokyo, but overall I am so so so happy I did this. Especially when I did, because if I had tried to wait a year it would have been cancelled and who knows when things will ever get back to normal!

For the Tokyo Disney Resort itself, I think I overhyped it in my mind. Every guide and trip report I read just raved about it. So I went into it expecting to have my mind blown. But those crowds just were ridiculous! Also, being solo didn’t help since I did start to feel very alone.

For Tokyo Disneyland, the crowds were not as bad, so I actually had some better experiences. Also I think my favorite ride at TDR (Honey Hunt) was there, so I enjoyed that. And the parades and atmospheric entertainment were amazing! Decorations for the holidays too were superb. And the food was fun, with lots of great snacking options. However, a lot of the rides themselves were really just copies of WDW. I do know they have the new BatB area, and while I think that ride has some great aspects, it also doesn’t make me need to go back to visit right away. Their Fantasyland needs more foliage though – it really felt too much of a concrete wasteland. Tomorrowland too, but I’ve heard rumors they may be adding some new stuff there eventually.

For DisneySea, obviously crowds caused big issues and I don’t know if there’s much of a solution. And once they get Fantasy Springs completed, which does look absolutely amazing, it will get even worse. The Harbor shows were fun, albeit finding spots sucked, especially with the lottery viewing areas taking away so much of it. Unfortunately I didn’t get to ride Journey to the Center of the Earth, which I think would have been one of my fav rides, so that will have to wait for a future trip. The overall park is gorgeous however, and also has some super fun food!
Ok, and my overall rankings of the parks:

1 – Disneyland. The original, it will always be #1 in my book!

2, 3, 4 – I am including these as a group because the actual order doesn’t matter and could change.

-Disneyland Paris. Love this park, so many details and fun rides and just great atmosphere.
-Shanghai Disneyland. Such a huge surprise! And I have so much love for this park, standing up for it whenever I hear bad things. I can’t wait to go back!
-Animal Kingdom. Also love this one, so authentic and immersive.

5, 6 – I have a harder time placing these. I mean the parks are gorgeous with great entertainment, but still have issues with the other guests and crowds and operations. So many people put them as the top 2 Disney parks but really I would choose any of the above ones, and probably some of the other lower ones too.

-Tokyo Disneysea
-Tokyo Disneyland

7 – Hong Kong Disneyland. Such great rides and a charming park. Again, can’t wait to return.

8 – California Adventure. Another home park for me, which I still love!

9 – Magic Kingdom. This would probably be higher if I wasn’t a Disneyland local, but I still consider the original to be better.

10 – Hollywood Studios. This would have been lower until it finally got “finished” in early 2020 with MMRR.

11 – Epcot, Festival season. I like the festivals at Epcot, but Diet Epcot just doesn’t interest me enough.

12 – Walt Disney Studios Parc (Paris). I do love the shows here and some fun rides, but that park needs so much help! Hopefully the new lands will open sooner rather than later.

So, some answers to the questions I posed at the beginning!

  • What did I think of the Disney parks in Asia? I think I answered these – Shanghai and Hong Kong were just amazing! Tokyo had great parks but issues with my visit.
  • What were my favorite rides? At Shanghai: Tron, Pirates, Peter Pan, Buzz Lightyear, Voyage to the Crystal Grotto. At Hong Kong: Mystic Manor, Big Grizzly Mountain Railroad, Ant-Man and the Wasp. At Tokyo: Honey Hunt, Sinbad.
  • Which ride did I get a certificate from? Mystic Manor! And I love it so much!
  • How many times did I ride Tron? I think I did it 6 times? Day 1 – early entry, hotel FP, paid FP; Day 2 – regular FP, 2x single Rider. And I CANNOT wait for it to come to MK!
  • Which memorable character meets did I experience? Gelatoni in Hong Kong was super fun. And Gepetto/Fairy Godmother in Tokyo
  • What was my most stressful travel experience (maybe ever)? Almost missing my flight from Hong Kong to Tokyo! I still have nightmares about it!
  • What was it like to fly business? AMAZING! I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to fly to Asia in economy!
  • Would I try the Green Alien Mochi in Tokyo? Absolutely, and loved them!
  • What would I do differently in the future? First thing would be adding more rest days – that really zapped my energy once I got to Tokyo. In a future trip I may also try reversing the order of parks so I get to Tokyo energized and can have a better experience?
  • When will I visit again? I have no idea! I definitely want to go back to all of them, but probably will wait several years after Zootopia opens in Shanghai, Frozen and the castle open in HK, and Fantasy Springs opens in Tokyo. Of course, the current global climate isn’t helping things at all!
  • What surprise dismeets did I have? Natalie from Instagram and Spencer from twitter, both in Tokyo! I originally thought I would meet with a fellow disser in Shanghai and then a character performer who had just moved to HK, but both of those fell through, so it was funny to get these accidental meets!
Feel free to ask any questions!

What a TR!! Thanks for sharing so much of your experience and I enjoyed travelling vicariously especially now!! Loved all your merch too...it must be so much fun to have it around and reminisce about that amazing trip! Can't wait to see what you are up to next!!
