US to lift travel ban for foreign air travellers who show proof of vaccination

CBC has written an article about the mixed dose issue [no answers yet; CDC is evaluation which vaccines to accept]: https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/mixed-vaccine-air-travel-1.6187613
Ok so I’m not sure how to feel about that article. Ignoring the opinions of the traveller and the lawyer, ( both of whom further the narrative but don’t give us any actual info to go on ) that leaves only the information in the quote from the CDC. And basically it’s “under review” .

For my own personal and purely selfish travel interests that could literally mean anything. They might accept mixed AZ vaccines or not , and it could happen sooner or maybe later. Bleh. I have rented DVC points and to recover a 75% credit I have to know what’s happening by November 2nd so I can keep or move them. I will be watching intently but it’s not looking great.

The latest comments by the CDC directly in that article make it feel very unlikely they will accept mixed vaccine AZ/Pfizer by November but i hope i’m really wrong.

I feel like 😢

I waiver between hope and belief that it will all work out, and I'll be able to go on my cruises in March, and frustration and anger that this is even a situation. Regret also has a place, why did I listen to the advice and get AZ? Why did I mix when they said it was better? Why!? And among it all, guilt that I am in a position to worry about these things in the midst of this global pandemic. It gets to be a bit much I have to say. And all the politics involved in these decisions that should have been based on health and wellbeing. :(

In Alberta, they are offering a 3rd dose of mRNA for those who are mixed... hopefully other provinces will follow suit. For those of us with two shots of mRNA, this doesn't change anything right? We still have to test before flying to the USA right? (And we still have to find a place to do a PCR or NAAT test in the USA before flying back right?)

I couldn’t agree more. Add in that I am so very torn on visiting that state for my own ethical reasons and none of this feels good. I don’t know what to do and sometimes I am excited and ready to go and other times I feel like the Disney era might be over for us and it’s time to move on . What strange times we are living in 😞.

This is what I’ve been hoping for, but Ontario says they will not be offering third doses for the purpose of travel.

I am also riding this teeter-totter. Once I have used the two tickets I have it is going to be serious soul searching time. Hopefully the Disney experience will be back to more of the good old days otherwise...

For our trip in November I am going with dh and DD13 along with bff and her 13yr old DS. All adults are AZ/Moderna, both teens are Pfizer. My bff is actually American, in the process of becoming a CDN citizen. So even if mixed doses are not approved by our Nov trip she can still go with her DS as she would be an "unvaccinated" US citizen and would just need more tests. So she may very well be going without us (and I don't blame her one bit, I'm just super sad because she and I have been planning this trip for a while). 😢

If you want even further complications....

Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines has clarified their policy for what vaccines they accept. See https://www.royalcaribbean.com/gbr/en/faq/questions/what-vaccines-are-accepted

For Canadians, take a look at the timelines between doses required for cruises from non-US ports... third doses may not help many people because our two mRNA doses will be too far apart [I got my dose 2 of an AZ-Pfizer mix, which was Pfizer, 13 weeks ago, so any third dose I get will be over the 12 week maximum between two mRNA doses]. Also, for some people who only have two mRNA or AZ doses, those two doses may be too far apart because of the extended dosing period used in many provinces.

Some of the other cruise lines also have similar length of time between doses requirements. It is possible some countries may decide to have similar kinds of rules at some point, too.

These nuances will be important to watch for Canadians traveling abroad [country requirements] and cruising [cruiseline and country/port requirements]. And it will be important when the US comes out with their requirements to pay attention to the details in case there is a "gotcha" like a timing requirement.

I have dual citizenship, so will also be able to travel to the US as an 'unvaccinated' American if they decide not to accept AZ-mRNA mixed dose. But that ends up being a bunch of testing, and in short timeframes :-( And it won't help for cruising from a US port.

I read in an article covering the issue that the Canadian government has been working with the US on the issue, including providing data and other information about mixed dosing to help inform the CDC's decision-making. Hoping that means CDC will have enough data to make a favourable decision in a timely manner.

You are so lovely Mel. Thank you for being so kind. You are very much appreciated!
Whenever I get down I do a quick gratitude check and I have so much to be grateful for that I have zero to complain about. I will get over another moved Disney trip . I still have it pretty good 😊

But if you are sailing from a US port then you are fine timing wise.

To be honest I think (for Ontario residents) this is another abdication of provincial responsibility --- they have power to pressure both the Canadian Federal government to lobby but even MORESO offer a 3rd shot for travelers (free or for a fee --- but just to say no --- is totally unacceptable.) If the provincial government offered AZ folks who had Pfizer or Moderna as second shots --- at least the option of a 3rd shot that would diffuse a lot (since other provinces do.)

Can't do much about the interval stuff for some of the cruise ship stuff --- but with both Canadians and Europeans possibly ensnared in this stuff the lack of options for Ontarians is totally not okay.

We are supposed to cruise on the Fantasy next Aug. Both DH and I are AZ-Pfizer with an 8 wk interval. We’re just done. Can I assume correctly that we can enter Europe with mixed dose? We’ll head back to DLP and visit family in Belgium if that’s the case - we can rent out our DVC, but I think it’s time to sell. Lots of places in the world to see that follow actual science.
