I broke my wrist on October 10th and I am going to Disney on the 24th. Someone please help me. I am in extreme pain because the doctor put me in a brace and not a cast. I might call them to see if they can put me in a cast on Monday. If i choose the cast will I not be able to go on the cool and big roller coaster rides.

You might ask your doctor what the timeline is for recovery. You still have some time before you go and you may be feeling better by then.

Another option is just to delay your trip for a while. There is nothing wrong with delaying until you feel better.

Probably depends on the cast and how immobilized you are. My wife had a hand cast for a badly busted finger and rode everything she wanted to without issue. She would have also been fine skipping the wilder rides if she was in pain or felt she couldn't, though.

Thank you all for responding I am now leaning towards the cast and just know I greatly appreciate your opinions!!! So thanks❤️

So why would the cast prevent you from riding them? Is it that you need to hold on with both hands or because your doctor is recommending that you avoid them?

I know intensity of rides can very from person to person but for someone who loves thrill rides, there isn't really any ride on property that would require you to hold on with both hands. You should just be able to keep your cast hand in your lap.

Thanks you. I was just thinking like they wouldn’t want it to get more injured in some rides.

A cast anywhere is not a lot of fun. Plus, you have to worry about getting it wet, so washing hands, showering, etc, all gets more complicate. Do you have an expectation that one could alleviate your pain considerably, based on medical advice? I’d get all the information possible on this before opting for a cast over a brace. Perhaps using a sling during park days would provide some additional (and removabe!!!) support, and act as a reminder to not use that hand/wrist unnecessarily. Tightening a sling could also help prevent jarring or arm flailing where you can’t grip with both hands.

honestly, the thrill rides would be my least consideration, as most are not as intense as you might expect. Big Thunder is bumpy but bracing your feet and holding on with one hand is easy enough. If your pain level is likely to remain high two weeks following this injury, the best advice is to reschedule, if possible.

Who's they...the CMs or your doc?

No medical advice here would do you any good but I would not assume that just because it's cast you won't be able to do thrill rides. I've been cast before with no limitations at WDW. As others have said...talk to your doc.

You really need to talk to your doctor. If jostling or high pressure rides are going to impact your healing, it's not worth it. Even Barnstormer can be pretty rough. Don't push an injury at Disney.

Exactly. My husband broke his hand a couple years ago and he wasn't allowed to even jog for 6 weeks! The doctor made it very clear that if he didn't listen, his bone wouldn't heal properly and he could end up with a hand with limited mobility in the future.

Please consult your doctor, not this board. Only your doctor can tell you if the movement from the rides could be harmful to the healing process. I don’t know if you are flying to get to Orlando. Flying can cause swelling, which isn’t good with a cast. Check with your doctor about that too. I hope it’s an easy recovery for you.

Thank you for letting me take everything into consideration especially like day to day events. I will go in a sling with whatever I may have to cover my wrist thank you

Do you know how flying would be harmful and anyways to avoid it. Thank you I will ask my doctor about the restrictions

Don't they have fiberglass casts now instead of plaster? I thought the newer casts if not completely water proof are much better at being water resistant?

The concern is due to swelling and circulation. With a cast, there’s no way to remove it if swelling occurs on a plane. Usually this is most likely to happen, depending on your injury, within the first 1-2 weeks of a broken bone. Many years ago I broke my foot a few days before I was supposed to travel home. The doctor chose not to cast it and instead had me see an orthopedic surgeon in my local area as there was concern my foot would swell on my (long) flight home. I think feet/ankles/arms are more at risk of swelling than hands/wrists/arms just due to gravity and it being easier to elevate an arm to alleviate swelling than it is to elevate a leg, especially on an airplane. My foot did end up swelling on my flight, and I was grateful I didn’t have a cast on it.

Thank you I am leaning towards cast because when I experience most of pain is when something is hits it(my wrist). But my doc said that it still will ache and hurt because when a broken bone is healing it hurts.
