Just back from a week in Anaheim

We just returned back to Autralia after a week in Anaheim.

I'm just going to make a few points in this post for anyone who may be interested - especially from the point of view of a foreign visitor.

The Aussie Dollar is weak right now, so things cost us A LOT of money, we are only getting 60c to the US $1 so our food ect added up really quickly and we just felt like the costs were so high compared to previous years.
The food portions at Disney seem to have gotten smaller with the prices going up - this is to be expected but was really hurting our hip pocket.
We normally get a kids meal and split it between the kids - I found I couldn't do this anymore.

We stayed at the Americas Best Value Inn on Katella and it was fine, the walls are thin but we were so tired that we slept all night anyway, it was a nice 10min walk to the parks and I would stay there again.

While at Disneyland we did the following "upgrades"
Fantasmic Standard Dining Package at River Belle Terrace - the food was horrendous. It just wasn't good at all. I also heard the people seated next to us send the food back - the chicken was so dry my 4yo spat it right out, the people next to us sent the chicken back also and got something else. I can not recommend this restaurant at all - the tickets for Fantasmic were worth the cost though.
World of Color Dessert Party - this was great, we really enjoyed it. It was expensive but the seating was great and the food was good and plentiful.

We also did two character meals - Plaza Inn with Minnie which we all loved and the Princess Breakfast which we all did not - I wrote a review of that one already explaining why - I do not recommend this character meal at all.

We DID NOT purchase Genie+, we simply couldn't afford it. I will say we weren't coming to go on the biggest rides all week long but I did manage to get a few in by getting to the parks for rope drop.
Thank goodness for Rope Drop or we would have got nothing done, wait times were bad, I've never experienced wait times like this before, but I have also never been at this time of year before, so that could be a reason - people coming for the Christmas Decorations which is why I was there also. It was impossible to do any rides after lunchtime, so we just focused on shows or character meets after that. Which was a shame, but I wasn't waiting in hour long lines with two kids (4 and 6) the 4yo is quite "naughty" so was really disruptive waiting in lines and I didn't want to subject everyone in line to her behaviour.

We ended up purchasing the Lightning Lane for Radiator Springs Racers on our last day (this past Sunday) because we really wanted to ride it - AU $100 for one ride is just so extreme but it was the only way it was getting done, at rope drop the time was 95mins and it only went up from there on both days we visited. With LL we were on the ride in 10mins.

Ride breakdowns were a HUGE problem, it made the lines so much longer, I noticed at one point in DCA that there were 5 rides broken down at the same time - this just isn't good enough.

Overall we had a good time, was it a GREAT time? NO, it was the most disappointing trip we have ever taken, but things have changed and I guess we have nothing to do but roll with it.
I hate Genie+ and am so sad that it is here to stay - I do hope they can tweak it to be more like a Universal Pass in Orlando where it is either unlimited OR you can get on a ride whenever you want - not by booking it. If that was the case I "may" have purchased it, but as it stands now, there was no way I was paying $25+ per person to "maybe" ride a handful or rides once - I need more of a guarantee to shell out that kind of money.

Nice write-up. Very common theme these days it seems.

What part of Oz are you in? I lived down there for a few years a while back. Would love to go visit again but that flight kills me!

It’s a long flight but not too bad, I’ve been to London and it’s about 23 hours so 14 to LA isn’t bad - we drive 5 hours to the airport also so that kills is more than the flight to be honest

I’m on the far south coast of NSW, 5 hours south of Sydney

23 hours is closer to what it took me to get there from Idaho, so I guess 14 would be way better. Although I don't even like flying for 6 or 8 hours (I'm a wimp about it.)

Lovely area you're in. I'm jealous, especially with you heading into summer now! I lived mostly in Victoria - Bendigo and a tiny town called Alexandra and then a bit of time in Melbourne area (Templestowe.) So many great people in Oz, but I think it's the proper meat pies I miss most..... :P

I've been to Alexandra before on a road trip - spent the night there. I'll have to take your word on the meat pies - never been a fan as a kid and I'm a vegetarian now.

Wendy tell me about the Plaza Inn breakfast. This is the one my niece really wants to do and on our last few trips with the other nieces and nephews we have had heaps of character i teractions without having to leave our table, not to mention nice food. How was it for you?

Your experience was similar to mine in September (also coming from Australia).

It was our third family trip. We sort of felt like if we weren't staying at GCH, using Disney+ and ILL every day, we would have had a pretty miserable trip.

To each their own, and I'm glad some people still enjoy the parks as they are now. It's just not for us as a family anymore, and we won't be back.

The problem is express pass is soooo expensive.

Also I have never been to Disneyland. Going next summer. But didn’t the max pass cost money as well? Wasn’t it kinda like genie plus. I just remember everyone always said they loved it and wanted it in WDW saying better system than FP was.

MaxPass was about $10 per person if I remember correct. It gave you access to reserve FastPasses (that everyone in the parks could get with our without Maxpass) through your phone. So if you didn't have Maxpass you could still get Fastpasses by walking to the rides/spots where they were handed out. With Maxpass you could save all the extra walking. I really liked that system much more than Genie+. Seemed more fair all around since everybody could get a few Fastpasses per day and the standby lines were on average shorter than now.

It had gone from $15 to $20 by the time the parks closed. Though annual pass holders could add it for a flat cost of $125 (up from $100) for the year.

I'm a local and will not set foot in DL at this point. It is unacceptable for rides to be breaking down all the time, and extreme wait times. I'm also a former CM and feel sad for what the parks have become. We used to go for the amazing food....not any more. Sad.

We had a really great trip last week. I did but genie+ ahead of time so it was $20, same as maxpass, and it worked really well for our big group. I’d personally skip a character meal or other special event and pay for this instead. We did WOC dessert party and only one other table service meal to help balance this cost.

Sorry about your rough trip, Wendle. And we used to live in Canberra-would love to go back and visit!

We really liked the Plaza Inn Breakfast, it was good. The food was very tasty and there was heaps to choose from. It was a little chaotic getting food as there were people everywhere, but I found as our meal went on the lines got really short when going back for more food.
The Characters we saw were, Minnie, Pooh, Tigger, Chip, Dale, Daisy and Pluto.

I don't mind paying for the express pass because you can go to the ride whenever you want - you aren't booking a time for it and you are GUARANTEED to get on each ride if you want to. With Genie+ you're taking a gamble that you MIGHT be able to book a time slot. I'm not taking that gamble!

I would 100% rather character meals and special events than pay for the abomination that is Genie+
For our party meeting Characters is more important than rides and attractions.
This trip was more about experiencing Christmas-Time at DLR rather than getting on as many rides as we could - the issue was the ride breakdowns making crowds worse - everyone was walking the paths - in shops etc instead of being on attractions. It caused huge issues just trying to walk, the amount of people that were trod on, pushed over etc was terrible. It was honestly like cattle being herded.

Well for over ten times the amount you better be guaranteed to ride every ride. But are you really???
We did a one day park to park. 200 for ticket. Then 250 to add express pass. Wow. And it DIDNT include the 2 best rides velocicoaster and hagrids. So idk about gaurenteed.

Much cheaper to stay at the three deluxe hotels and get free express for everyone in your party. We’ve done the hard rock-which is a lovely hotel and very close-for about $300 a night for four, which includes two days of express pass for a night.

Because you did it wrong
Stay at a premium hotel and get it for “free”
We also get an annual pass for one guest and get an AP discount on the hotel also

Works out so much cheaper - paying out of pocket is not the way to go for EP at Orlando Universal

My experience of Disneyland and DCA last week (was there from Canada, first trip to DL since 2016). Yes, everything outrageously expensive. We did the Genie+ simply because I wanted to go on lots of rides. We had lunch at Blue Bayou and the food was great for us. We never rope drop (I am NOT a morning person). The earliest we arrived was about 10AM one day, and later on other days. I would go for a few hours and then return at night. The best time for DL is after 10PM. Many rides become pretty much a walk on at that point (or very minimal wait). I find I get more and more fond of DCA with each trip. Many times I prefer it to DL due to feeling less crowded. I also really love Cars land, what used to be the Tower of Terror (I'm not a Marvel fan, but I still like the ride), and Soarin' (although I really prefer the California version). The "world" version of Soarin' you really need to be in the middle section or it is too distorted for my liking. Grizzly River Run is also fun, and really no waits during this time of year even though it was warm out every day lol.

I've never seen so many rides broken down so often in my 40 years of going to Disney.

The reservation system and 1PM Park Hopping SUCKS! I really hope they get rid of that nonsense.

My wallet will be hurting for a long time.
