Williams , AZ is the railroad town - they say they were the last town on Route 66 before the highway passed them by. We took the train up to Grand Canyon the first day - fun entertainment and storytelling on the train and we were "robbed" by horseback riding bandits on the way home, followed by a "shootout" in the middle of town later in the day . We were there in July of 2021 and had a couple great choices of outdoor restaurants.i flew into scottsdale, drove a bit, beautiful scenery. stayed at a place right outside (railroad stuff around), sorry I don't recall the name
got quite cold in the canyon.
also went thru sedona etc which is also beautiful
When I researched, some of the lodging options in the National Park itself did not have A/C, and some share bathrooms. The A/C is a deal breaker for me - so do your homework!
