Abducted in Plain Sight

@kashzan rant away. It was a terrible situation that the parents allowed to continue. If they truly wanted to protect Jan than they would have let B expose their secrets. They could have then exposed his. Yes it might have been terrible to their reputation, but it could have prevented additional trauma.

As a parent I try to educate my children about safety and reporting to adults and parents. We cannot remain so naive about things/peoples actions. Turning a blind eye is never the solution.

OMG, the creep slept in the girl's bed 4x/week for 6 months leading up to the first abduction! The parents were SO gullible, SO stupid, SO naive.

AND...they basically sold their daughter's safety out because they didn't want their own dirty laundry exposed. DISGUSTING!

I cannot tell you how mamy times I yelled, “ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?!?!?!” at the TV. I simply cannot believe those parents weren’t both lobotomized. Their issues went way neons being naive. They were criminally stupid. Jan seems way too bright to be their child.

I can completely see how an abducted and drugged child could be hoodwinked, but those idiot parents have no excuse. The father “helping out” B was beyond belief.

Now I’m going to make DH watch it, because I told him that if I just described it, he’d never believe it. Seriously, if a fictional movie was produced with this story line, it would be too over the top to be believable. Unless the Coen brothers did it.

I tried to explain to a group of friends at dinner over the weekend. They honestly looked at me like I had lost my mind!

Ok, so on top of all this, Jan’s mom has an AFFAIR with the child molester?! WHAT IN THE WORLD?!

And then the 2nd abduction, the parents waited 2 weeks to call the police! Why? They didn’t want people to “talk” in town.

Everything about this story is mind boggling....including how both Jan and her sister don't seem to fault the parents AT ALL for everything that happened. They just kinda shrugged it off like yeah, mom and dad made some mistakes but they did the best the could. What in the actual f***????

yup They also waited close to a week before reporting the first abduction. They said perhaps he FORGOT to call them. WHAT THE HECK
Unbelievable how the other sisters as well as Jan do not hold the parents responsible at all. They were not victims, they were almost as guilty as B for allowing this mess to happen. It just boggles my mind !!!

I wonder about the mother. Of the two, the father seems to admit that he knew things weren't right and he did get angry when the mother put her on the plane and sent her to B in Jackson Hole. I haven't finished watching yet, but so far I don't get the feeling that the mother is all that remorseful about her role in this. Like maybe she isn't telling the entire story, just the part that makes her look like a victim as well. I wonder when her affair with B really started.

Part of the problem is it was the 70s. No talk of molestation. In fact there were not child abuse laws...there were dog abuse laws before child abuse. It was a whole different way of thinking then. Also the parents could not have their dirty laundry aired. That would have been a crazy big no-no then. We, parents of this century, can't fathom but it was so different then. And the parents believed what they wanted to. Seemed very self absorbed. I am still watching and hope to see the daughters cut ties from the toxic parents.

Also may be that their religion influenced it some. They were LDS (I think I heard the FBI guy say) and, well, look at Warren Jeffs. Not that all LDS are this way but I do suspect there is a role here with this story and the show didn't delve into it.

The taped calls...he says it's Bob and the mom always says Hello B. Why B? Seems very intimate.

True, I was a child in the 70s and I don't remember anyone talking seriously about any type of abuse until I was a teenager.

"B" was a nickname the daughter gave him. She mentions it early in the interview.

Wow, the mother made money off of this by writing a book. What a piece of work.

Glad the effer offed himself.

Also very angry the law didn't protect here but that was the times back then. A teenage neighbor boy did something to me around 1977, when I was 4, and my parents called the police who said 'little girls can prance around so seductively...it's not his fault'. Didn't do anything.

Hey, we all watched it.

I have really puzzled over how they are willing to publicize this as if "we were just a normal family and this happened to us" and that's how I keep going back to brainwashing.

I grew up in the 70's and child molestation was something we all knew about. Maybe it wasn't talked about as much as today, but grew I up with "don't take candy from strangers, don't look for anyone's lost dog" warnings and had heard of instances.
