White Noise Machine ?

Hi. My daughter has been home from college a few days here and there the last two months or so. Every single morning around 4:30/5 am the birds start chirping. We live in the suburbs and this is exactly how it is every year but she is so focused on them that she can't sleep and she is one to stay up late. She is home just until this morning and she barely made it to 5am. She has tried keeping music on, a tv (she doesn't have one in her room but she tried sleeping in the family room) and I bought her a fan which isn't very loud but that did nothing.

So I was just looking at Bed, Bath and Beyond and they have quite a selection of white noise machines. Does anyone use one? If so can you recommend one please. I'd want one that plugs in instead of batteries since it would need to stay on all night and I don't want to constantly have to change batteries. Also, some make various noises and some are just a loud fan type noise. I'm thinking one with various sounds would work better? Oh and yes the birds are quite loud and active so it would need to be one that is loud yet not so loud that it would keep the rest of us hearing it from our bedrooms. Thanks!

Don’t buy a machine! There are free white noise apps for smartphones and they’re awesome! I could never sleep without mine. I actually prefer “brown” noise, but my app has every sound you can think of. I am always grateful to have it with me when I travel. If someone is chomping/cracking gum (a sound that makes me violent) I pop in my headphones and it solves the problem.
Just search for it in the App Store. It will definitely cover the sound of birds chirping.

I didn't even think about an app. I will tell her. Thx.

I have a white noise machine I use at home-- I've had it about 15 years. When I travel I use my white noise app. It was free in the app store. There are multiple noises you can chose from but I still go for the white noise.

I have a White Noise App on my phone. I was traveling earlier this week and it helped me a lot. I chose a thunderstorm.

We LOVE our White Noise machine. It's a Dohm from Bed Bath and Beyond. It plugs into the wall which is nice because it'd be annoying to use batteries.

lol, I like the brown one, too. Just don't use one with water, unless you have a really strong bladder....

I bought a small, simple one off Amazon. It's called The Big Red Rooster, although I have no idea why, as it's not big, and it's not red (it's black) lol. It usually sells for $19.99 but I got it for $9.99 one day. It has sounds like waterfall, rain, ocean, birds , crickets, fan sound, thunder, and brook. It plugs in or can use batteries. It goes loud or soft, and I find it very restful to fall asleep to.

Earplugs. Leight Sleepers on Amazon. The ones that are hot pink and neon yellow. These are the ONE thing I can't live without. Works for all kinds of situations. I am one of those who needs absolute silence to sleep. White noise machines drive me absolutely crazy and I cannot fall asleep with one on. Just traveled with my sister who needs to use a white noise machine and my earplugs kept me in silent bliss the whole time.

I’ve used one for decades, but I wouldn’t buy one, I just use an app when traveling.

Did she live in a dorm? When I was in college the dorm was so noisy, I'd come home and sleep 14 hours and didn't hear a thing

Yes she is currently in a dorm. Her school is undergoing lots of growth. They are putting up a brand new building plus renovating one of the food areas right outside her dorm. She can't get away from noise. She said with the construction she can sometimes get back to sleep but the birds are kiling her - lol

I have read good things about the Dohm that PPs mentioned.

Honestly, though, a standard box fan set on 3 will be loud enough. We use them all the time.

I use a free app called Sleep Machine. There are dogs behind our property that bark and I like to sleep in. I never hear them with the noise. There are several different sounds and you can customize it by mixing up to four different sounds together. I use it on vacation too.
