Just watching the Dreams Unlimted podcast on taking dogs to Disney and Universal and thought I would share some details about our upcoming Disney vacation with our 3 year old goldendoodle Penny.

When DS 26 saw the announcement in October about the dog friendly Disney resorts it was only a matter of days before he convinced us to book a trip with our dog. We chose A Fort Wilderness cabin for our stay. My thinking was that if she barked while in the cabin it wouldn’t be as bothersome as if we were in a regular hotel room.

We are taking two days to drive to Disney from the Philadelphia area. Our first stop will be in Savannah, GA. We have travelled with this and our previous dog and usually stay at a La Quinta when possible. We have never left our pets alone in a hotel room so when traveling we usually get meals to go (Cracker Barrrel, Olive Garden, etc.) and eat in the room. There is no extra fee for having a dog at La Quinta.

There is a pet friendly ghost walk in Savannah so if the weather is nice we will do that after dinner and or walk along the Riverfront.

The next morning we will drive to Jekyll Island which has many dog friendly beaches and walk and picnic on the beach before driving to Daytona Beach for the night. We are staying at a La Quinta there as well but Daytona Beach is not dog friendly ( no dogs on the beach) but they are permitted to walk on the boardwalk.

First thing the next morning we will drive straight to Best Friends Pet Resort where Penny will stay for day care Monday thru Friday. It will cost approximately $55 a day for day care and 4 hours of group play. We had to send a copy of her vaccinations. She also had to go to the vet and get the canine flu vaccines which required a second shot and needed to be completed about a month before the trip.

Our plan is to take Penny to day care each morning, go to the parks, and then pick her up between 5 and 6 o’clock each evening. We made some lunch reservations but will eat breakfasts and dinners in the cabin. Our fast passes have all been made at times before 4:00 so that we can leave to pick Penny up.

Since there will be 3 adults on our trip and we are staying for 4 nights, each night two of us will go back out to a park for the evening and the other will stay at the cabin with Penny. She will be tired from playing all day so on the 4th night she should be used to the cabin so we are planning to leave her after dinner to go to Hollywood Studios for the dessert party.

Since we will have our car we will most likely drive to the parks most days which will enable us to get back and forth from Best Friends in a reasonable amount of time.

We did rent a golf cart which Penny is allowed to ride on so we will take her her to the dog park in the evenings and also walks in the morning before she goes to Best Friends.

This will certainly be a different type of Disney trip but we are super excited to take Penny. We have never stayed at Fort Wilderness before and are really looking forward to that as well.

On the way home we will spend one night at an oceanfront hotel in Virginia Beach which allows dogs on the beach before Memorial Day. The whole trip will be an adventure.

Wow sounds like you are a very responsible dog owner. I was wondering if everything went well taking your dog to best friends and to disney.

Deb.
