Now this teacher has accrude plenty of PTO....Now what do you say ?

DH is a teacher. I try and tempt him to take off to take a trip when its NOT crowded and a million dollars ( or free dining) He says NO way !
interested to see what others think ?

If he can get it worked out with his principal, I say go for it. I am an ex-teacher and I did take a week off for Disney one year. We were having a family reunion at Disney and the week that was planned was after my own spring break. It was during my nieces spring break and since they were in high school they could not miss school. My dd at the time was not in school.

I asked my principal about it as soon as I found out about it. He approved it on the spot. Now I did not take any vacation or sick days. I ended up using comp time. During that year I went on maternity leave when I had my ds, but due to some testing that my principal wanted me to handle I worked a weeks during maternity leave. Instead of messing things up with HR, he just had me document my time.

People need to understand that sometimes teachers do need to take off during the school year. I know many other teachers do due to that their spouses job doesn't always allow them to take off in the summer.

DD's teacher took a week off this year. She told the parents she would be gone and let us know who her substitute would be for the week. I told DD, I bet she is going to Disney( she didn't specify why she would be gone.) DD asked her " Are you going to Disney?" She said yes, and DD said "me too, I'm going in January" They high-fived over their Disney excitement.....The week she was gone went smoothly, I was actually happy she was going! That means when we take DD out of school in January for our trip, she will probably be more understanding:goodvibes

I'd say have a GREAT WELL DESERVED TRIP! Think as long as it is approved by everyone in admin they don't need to worry about what a parent thinks. They earned time so it doesn't matter! :)

I personally don't have a problem with teacher taking vacation during the school year as long as their is a competent substitute to cover their absence. I think that a happy, well rested teacher gives my son a better education.

As a matter of fact, I proposed to our school board to modify the traditional calendar in our division giving a full week off in October, 2 weeks at Christmas, a full week in February and a full week off in April then off for July and August. The school board has actually reacted positively to my proposal and is getting feedback from all the schools, teachers and parents within the division to see what they feel about it. I am pretty pumped that it is even being considered.

I feel my son will be more successful if he enjoys school and part of his enjoyment will be having happy teachers who love their jobs and are not burnt out. This is just my personal opinion and no, I am not in the education field at all.:)

I am student teaching, so not actually teaching..yet. But, I do know that things come up, and opportunities arise. We have 3 kids, and they are all great students and I will pull them out of school in a second if I need to. As for teachers, I say do what is best for your family. Family is always first. We are a military family and my DH does not always get to take leave during school holiday time. For instance, this past May, my kids missed the last 3 days of school for us to go to Disney because that is when my husband could take leave. If I were teaching then, I still would have asked for the time off. Our vacation was very important to us as my DH is leaving this Monday for a 1 year deployment.
Do what is right for your family. There will always be someone who disagrees. Some of my fellow students do not think I should have taken this past week off of school to be home with my DH before he leaves. I personally could care less what they think as none of them are military spouses and have no clue what it would be like to be separated for a year. Good luck getting your DH to take time off!!

WOW :thumbsup2

What positive feed back....
My DH takes students seriously ... Sometimes I wish he didn't;)

"Cause I would like to try free dining sometime:rotfl:

If my childs teacher did it I wouldn't mind...

We live in Wisconsin and although I personally am not a big fan of hunting, we have several teachers, as well as our principal and school administrator, that take off a week in November EVERY year for mating season or I'm not even sure what...something big related to hunting. Doesn't seem to bother anyone.

My son's teacher just took off several days to go to New York for 9/11. It was less than 10 days after the school year started but I thought it was great that she went...her husband is a firefighter and it was important to them. So be it.

I'm not passing judgement on other teachers.

But I do would never do it. Unless I was chaperoning the Senior trip to WDW, I would NOT miss my classes to vacation.

If I'm out, it's because one of my kids are sick, I'm sick, I have an IEP meeting at my daughter's school, or a family emergency. Beyond that, I'm in school for 180 days a year.

Obviously then, we also do not pull our kids out of school for vacations. (My husband is a teacher too, so the whole "spouse couldn't get the time off" thing doesn't apply.)

It seems to me though that our opinons are less important than that of the OP's husband... it's his job, his reputation, his class. His "NO way!" response seems to indicate tht this is something he feels strongly about.

ETA-- Tricia, I just noticed you're on LI.

You might be able to get free dining the very last week before Labor Day. We've never done it; we both have to be back for meetings before Labor Day. But the vast majority of LI schools don't start that early.

I wouldn't have a problem with it, either, particularly if it's approved, and there is already a sub lined up, etc. etc. etc.

As a teacher myself, I spend a TON of time preparing for a sub so that my students can continue well enough without me. I'm guessing this teacher plans similarly. I personally would hate to plan for a week. Maternity leave was awful! :scared1:

With that said, I don't have to take time off, and our administration knows this, because we have a crazy calendar that allows time off in October, February, at Thanksgiving, at Christmas, Spring Break, and June, July, and some of August. If we asked to take another week off I think there would be a riot, and rightfully so. ;)

My dd's teacher did miss a week last year while her family went to WDW. She had a good substitute and class went on as usual (this was 1st grade). I personally don't have a problem with it. Teaching is a job - I wouldn't want to have to be limited to only the busiest/hotest times of the year to vacation.

I've done it 6 or 7 times myself....missing 6 school days each time (we would usually leave on a Thursday evening & return 10 days later the following Sunday).

No problems. Even my school's principal, guidance counselor, & both reading specialists have taken school time off for WDW trips.
:teacher:

**And as a side note, in my county, teachers don't get a a lot of week-long breaks (No fall breaks here or late Jan. breaks). We do NOT get a week off at Thanksgiving, and up until two years ago, only got 3 days off for Spring Break. The only other week-long break is Christmas/New Years.

I have no problem missing. We get PTO days and they do not accrue and if we don't use them, we lose them.

I think teachers are like anyone else and if you have the time coming you should be able to use it for whatever you want.

I have three children, a daughter who is 21 and a senior in college (student teaching this semester as a matter of fact), a daughter who is 17 and a senior in HS, and a son who is 6 and in first grade. Scheduling a week to Disney that is compatible with all of their school vacations has been near impossible! My oldest DD has to work a summer job so going in the summer cannot happen.

This ties into the story because DH and I said this has to be the year to go. Next year youngest DD will be in college and oldest DD may have a teaching job or be in grad school. So we planned the trip for right before Christmas and decided to pull the two youngest out of school because oldest DD's semester ended the day before we scheduled to leave (she would fly out of the city closest to where her college is). Come to find out, after everyone's plane tickets (except hers) were booked, her student teaching assignment does not end until three days into our 6-day trip due to a concert she has to conduct the night before (music teacher) and it will be impossible and she will not be able to make a flight early enough to get to Orlando in time for ME. I asked her if she could just ask for an hour off early to meet this flight and she said she felt wrong doing so. After a lot of talking she is actually now thinking of asking for the day off and then coming back to make it up the next week. So much for the best laid plans lol!

I am a teacher and we get 3 personal days. We do not have to give a reason they are being taken. They are PERSONAL days to do with as we choose. I use these coupled with a long weekend when we travel. I say, if you are willing to pull your kid from the teacher's class to go to Disney you have no right to be upset if the teacher does the same, Just sayin'.

I think you should do it.

Most people have no idea the sacrifices teachers make on a daily basis. Add to it that you only get time off during peak/expensive travel times and it's just a slap in the face.

As long as DH's classes are covered and structured with minimal interruption, he shouldn't have any second thoughts about taking the earned time off.

Just my 2 cents of course.

Doesn't bother me as long as the kids learning when their teacher is not there is the same quality it is when he is there :thumbsup2

I've dealt with this before. In first grade, my parents pulled my sister and I out of school for a week to go to WDW. My teacher at the time didn't have any problems at the time. She must have been a disney freak because she was excited for me.

In fifth grade, my teacher was out for a week because she went to Hawaii. In 9th grade, my PE teacher was out for a week because she had to go to Florida for a funeral. The subs were really good.

As long as they well prepare their sub, I'm all for it.

DD's teacher went to Disney, taking the 3 days before Fall Break off (we already had Thur and Fri off). I like that she planned her trip when she could minimize her time she was away from class, and a lot of kids from class were gone that week anyhow (including us, who saw the teacher at MK  )

I have also run into my students on a school day while in WDW, the most recent being this past late January. Both the mom & I took photos of me with the kids right in Tommowland.:rolleyes1
