Why did they change the boards appearence? It seemed to be ok to me.

This is the latest version of vbulletin. It has many more features and more flexibility than what was being used before (vbulletin 1.something). BEing able to change the color (as an example)

And part of the reason I would guess is that the old version of vbulletin would soon not be supported by the company. (There are a few versions of vbulletin inbetween)
