Autoimmunity and blood sugar readings

I have several autoimmune diagnosis a long with diabetes.

Late last year I fell and we treated it as a light concussion. About three weeks later I was taken to the ER. Had a CT scan and just a week or so had MRI with and without contrast. All good news from the tests.

The question I have is this; at the ER my sugar level was very high, even for me. Before I fell I was lucky enough to get sick (dental) where I only ate things like applesauce, yogurt and cup-o-noodle soup for several days. Basically I was fasting.

Any thoughts about why my sugars where so high when I was not eating anything thoughts?

Thanks for any and all help.

Were you drinking more since you weren't eating? Possibly more sweetened beverages?

Or did you have any medication or sedative in relation to the dental issue? New short-term meds (even OTC) and extensive dental work both tend to throw DH's sugar off for a bit.

I had been only drinking room temperature water due to the tooth issue. I never had much of anything in my system. I am a walking, well when I can walk, contradiction. If I behave, somewhat better than just veg broth I run really high. Yet, when I need to calm down a bit of goog Coke can zen me out.

Just thought maybe there was a reason why with only really broth, yogurt and room temperature water my sugar would spike. Guess it is another oddity of mine.

Thanks for the help.

You could have been dehydrated. Dehydration will make your blood sugar rise. Also stress, let’s face it, the dentist is stressful, can make it rise. If you have any infection/sickness including falls And you were probably less active since you were not feeling well. My DS 1st sign that he is getting sick is a rise in blood sugar readings. Also applesauce and yogurt are usually higher in carbohydrates without much protein. My guess is that it was the types of foods (although perfectly understandable) and most likely dehydration. Your doctor should give you “sick day” plans, if not, ask. Gatorade zero, water, sugar free jello (or jello water) can help keep you hydrated. So you see there is a plethora of things that can cause it to go up. It can sometimes be hard to pinpoint it, just do the best you can and really keep an eye on the readings and call your doctor when you need to. Hope you are feeling better!!!

Thanks for the information. As you can probably imagine at the time I was not really concerned about the total details of what I was eating. Just trying to eat anything my body said I could stomach. And only one or two items a day.

I will go back and check the items for their added sugars. They are all items I was told to eat, but the manufacturer could have easily changed it up and forgot to send me the letter. If only that was possible.

Still seems odd to me but your help is helping me 'look' for another reason. Or maybe a perfect storm hit.

I friend and I would always talk about how when we felt sick with something that the first cause for everything was stress. That sure helped, not. Add not feeling well, and the fact that my body turns stress, from the news Et Al., into physical pain and all is good times.

All I need is a dedicated team and I could be written about in articles far and wide.

I recently went thru similar. Guess I’ll tell story to stress how bad stress can be. But worrying about Covid, etc... and then strange rash turned out to be Shingles... So worry caused onset of shingles even tho I had the original recommended single shot and then the new double dose shingle shot and still got shingles!
Now I have had all the recommended Covid requirements including Pfizer but feel like I want to continue wearing mask because the shingles shots didn’t work so maybe the Covid shot too!
I am not stressing about anything anymore cause I don’t want to be sick.
Have you tried the low sodium V-8 or making a smoothie. I just use frozen bananas and orange juice. I also like Amy’s low sodium soups and no sugar applesauce And healthy greek yogurt and oatmeal, and spinach salad w/carrots and hard boiled egg and broiled chicken. Walking everyday for fresh air and a little sunshine. .
I hope you are better soon !

So very sorry about your shingles. Hope you are on the mend.I have told many people that the first thing I am going to be doing when I turn 50 is to get vaccinated.

Stress is a very bad friend indeed. As my Psychology teacher told every first class in abnormal psychology, "If you ever don't see that you have what the class is talking about. You are doing it wrong."I certainly hope that all goes right and if we can't get rid of anxiety, agoraphobia and the like that others who have now had an issue do today don't continue to view the life long suffers as wacko are able to gain some empathy.

We are over cautious, fully vaccinated and slowly getting more new normal. Right now doubling masks and only out to curbside shopping dr appointments. Normally In CE. We tried to have a fun outing two. For now as I call it PPE(Post Pandemic Erra) is when we feel like we want to be out to our favorites.

Yummy spinach and carrots. I have always been a picky eater. Mom Dad and I decided to go semi vegetarian. Eating only fish(tuna for me) and fowl.Salads were and are great. One night while studying I got a hankering for a salad. My parent's room was off the kitchen and Dad popped out to see what was going on. After I told him I was making a salad he said,"Oh." and went right back to bed

We rarely ate red meat, I'm not sure I even had a steak or another part of a cow beside that hamburgers. We ate turkey hotdogs and grilled chicken along with mom's homemade Zupa. Now that Morningstar Farms have a greater variety we mostly eat vegetables

Lately, everyone is having a hard time. Seeing my strong leaders began to worry us more. Stress causes me pain so, I am more in charge of just finding little things and making lists that we need to know when whomever is left. Read as trying to see if I need to use all giftcards for certain places before/if they go under. The lighterside.

I actually saw a relative in person at a hotel all being free and clear. My Unkle was the first person, outside of my household in almost a solid year. Best hug ever

After becoming semi a family friend was invited for TG dinner at my aunt's house and were discussing different food diets. He said something that we thought was funny about not eating that had eyelashes.

If you have not done so, make sure you go to diabetic education classes, see a nutritionist, and a good Endocrinologist. Not just a primary care doctor. Not sure how long you have had diabetes(plus the other autoimmune diseases) but key to management is a good team behind you.

What type of diabetes? Are you using insulin? As others have stated, the foods you have listed are all high carbs, so of course your blood sugar level would be high. Eating those carbs is not fasting in any way - carbs are quick energy for your body. To lower your blood sugar you need to avoid the processed/simple carbs, go more full grain, higher fiber (like the salads you mentioned, as long as there aren't a lot of processed add-ins) and eat more lean proteins. And I second the motion to see a nutritionist.

Thanks again for all replys.

I have specialist doctors literally from the top of my head to the bottom of my feet and all are acting in concert and often say,"I talked with doctor x about y." So, no worries about there being a huge missing piece. Since the ER doctors were not running around about the one higher read and after a dose of insulin they let me go without admitting or admonishing me I have definitely become, what I can only call re learning what my body and doctors are telling me and checking food I can eat.
I have had a lot of education on this since my Dad got sick and we had to go through the class and learnt to give shots. It has only been an issue with me at the ER, aside from dealing with the disease day to day. To steal a quote from Night Court, ' But I'm feeling much better now. '
