The Black Pearl, a Disney-sponsored sailboat bearing the Pirates of the Caribbean insigna, is currently braving its way through the Chesapeake Bay in the 2005-2006 Volvo Ocean Race.

The 70-foot-long boat festures a red and black hull and a massive mainsail emblazoned with the Pirates of the Caribbean skull and crossed swords symbol. Lead by skipper Paul Cayard, the 1998 Volvo Ocean Race winner and American's Cup veteran, The Black Pearl is crewed by an international team of 10 sailors.

A tradition that began in 1973 as the Whitbread race, the Volvo Ocean Race takes place every four years.

The Black Pearl joins six competing vessels in the current competition, which departed from Vigo, Spain on Nov. 12. The winner is expected to cross the finish line in Gotheburg, Sweden, by June 17.

The teams are nearing Baltimore and are expected to make stops in Annapolis, MD., and New York. For more about the race and The Black Pearl, including the boat's current position and updates from the crew, visit http://www.blackpearlracing.com/splash.asp
